Junior defensive back Brendan West, a 2010 graduate of Meridian High, was recently named the Navy sprint football team's MVP.
West produced 27 tackles this season, including 19 solo stops. He also was voted the recipient of the Special Forces Award, which goes to the school's best special teams player.
West led Navy in both kick (404, 31.1 average) and punt (253, 15.8 average) return yards. His season-long kick return of 86 yards went for a touchdown against Princeton.

Nampa Christian High hires softball coach, plans to construct athletic complex
Beth Kinzler was announced as the Trojans' new coach Dec. 7. Kinzler spent the past year as the Trojans' assistant and is a 1996 Emmett High graduate who went on to play shortstop at George Fox University (Newberg, Ore.)

Senior Sadie Stutzman of Fruitland High was announced as the 2012-13 Gatorade Idaho Volleyball Player of the Year on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-2 middle blocker, pictured at right, led Fruitland to the 3A state championship in October. She amassed 612 kills, 135 digs, 127 blocks, 74 aces and 24 assists in 2012. Stutzman also led Club Idaho to a 2012 Amateur Athletic Union Girls' Junior National Championship berth last summer.

Rocky Mountain High football coach Jason Warr and Columbia High football coach Derek Mertz recently resigned, according to each school's respective athletic director.
Warr has been the head coach at 5A Rocky Mountain since the school opened in 2008. In five seasons, Warr led the Grizzlies to an overall record of 24-26, including state playoff appearances in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Rocky's best season was in 2010, when the Grizzlies went 9-2 and advanced to the state semifinals.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Mogga Lado, Columbia: The 6-foot-7 junior helped the 4A Wildcats open the season with a 69-67 overtime win against 5A Meridian last week. Lado posted an impressive double-double of 23 points and 23 rebounds, while adding four assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
