Track trumps hoops as most popular girls sport

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently released its 2008-09 participation report, and track and field supplanted basketball as the most popular girls sport with 457,732 participants (an increase of 10,212).

Bob Firman Invitational cross country meet preview

The Bob Firman Invitational cross country meet returns to fan-friendly Eagle Island State Park on Saturday and it's shaping up to be a doozy.

Schools from California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming have combined to register more than 3,000 athletes, who will race for 5 kilometers across grass, sand and packed dirt. The runners in the elite division will be competing for some of the most prestigious titles on the racing calendar in the West.
