And they'd better immediately stop running these TV ads touting themselves....folks do not like paying for that.
will guarantee that there is no fraud, waste, stupidity, etc. I've worked in state universities that have them, and I know that no matter what the governance system is, bad stuff and stupid stuff can happen. Just look at our State Board of Education and State Department of Education.
The real thing keeping that from happening easily, if at all, is that it would take a Constitutional Amendment to do it, since UI is established there, as they preceded statehood. That has about as much chance of happening as stopping global warming.

You know...Dude...if we fix this backwoods school with their dinky enrollment (less than 12K), their athletics will probably get better. Maybe, the 'UoI-Latah Welfare County' mentality will improve too....could be a deal for you & your buds.
That’s all you care about, and identify your existence with...right? Who knows, you could move back there and get a job bar-tending or something.
There's lots of fine schools with enrollments around that much. Hey, UI could be like BSU and accept anyone with a pulse (BSU accepts about 90 percent of applicants) and brag about the highest enrollment in the state.
Maybe if you weren't blinded by your ignorance you would realize that BSU has no choice but to set its admissions standards low as it is the only public higher education institution in the valley. Without a community college to defer the lower core course students to, it has to take them all on. U of I isn't in that situation because of LCSC and their location away from the main population base. Give it a few years for CWI to take shape and BSU to continue its transformation to a true University and lets see where the U of I/BSU comparison falls. Face facts, U of I is in a downward spiral and their is no end in sight.

BSU doesn't 'have' to accept anyone. They 'choose' to set their standards low. Holy crap... that's one to go on the wall of fame for worst excuses by a BSU person to justify why their academics are sub-par. Yes, they are a great benefactor of the educationally challenged, accepting one and all in a spirit of altruism. Haha. Wow.
No one held a gun to anyone's head. The decision for acceptance standards wasn't made by someone else and shoved upon BSU. It was the university's choice. Hmmm... more students means increased enrollment and more $$. Are you seeing the connection yet? You've got to make a decision somewhere along the line - quality or quantity. BSU's choice is obvious. I'm not saying UI is Ivy League, but at least they don't swing open the doors and shove warm bodies in with a cattle prod.
I guess at this point I should probably quit engaging you in discourse, because clearly you are delusional beyond all help. It really is funny that you can't see BSU for what it is and that you will refute even the most obvious of facts. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Everything doesn't have to be blue and orange all the time. There are other colors out there, like B.S. brown. But I'm guessing you already know that.
You are totally wrong, you need to do some research sometime. The State Board of Education dictates the entrance levels for the universities, and BSU and U of I have identical requirement standards. Ever take economics, supply and demand drive our lives along with cost and U of I is costlier than BSU which has a much larger enrollment due to the population base and no ability to raise its standards without losing its funding from the State Board of Eduaction.
If you are looking for "BS Brown" perhaps you should check the back of the Vandal's uniforms.. oh wait I think they might have removed it...

"Yet Spear was rewarded with a four-year contract extension last year. It runs through 2012 and guarantees him more than $180,000 per year."
I'd be passionate about a school I worked for, too, if I was pulling that kind of money in per year. There is definitely a problem up there, and I'm with Zeke...as much as I have DETESTED Vandal Nation historically..for their poor sportsmanship and blatant rudeness and severely overblown egos...and as much as I kind of revel in their struggles right now...I would like to see them be more competitive. It means absolutely nothing to play or to beat the Vandals anymore.
However...and I don't really know why...I have a tiny feeling growing somewhere in the back of my mind that things will turn around for them soon. At least I hope so.
this could be a more healthy rivalry. It's almost not fun picking on the Vandals. Almost. I hope they can find a way out of the spiraling abyss they're in right now. The facts are, Boise State is stuck in the WAC for the time being. Idaho refuses to go back to the FCS (1-AA). For the sake of our conference, and a fun rivalry, we should support and hope for a better Idaho.

then I guess the Vandals can ride the 13 year streak against BSU, right? They certainly have not always been a 'joke'... unless beating BSU that much is a 'joke'. The series only turned in BSU's favor last year was it? But, that's not the issue here. I digress...
The real issue is bringing some semblance of respect back to Idaho football (and basketball) for the sake of the university. And I don't think it's going to happen with Spear at the helm. Cut him loose.
He has done nothing for Idaho athletics. I'm tired of the university wasting its time and money. Spear hasn't effected any positve change so why do we let him continue to muck things up? But, at the same time... honestly, who would want to walk into this situation as a new AD? It's a tough road Idaho athletics are facing, and I'm afraid I don't see it changing any time soon. But, as an Idaho alumn and fan, I'll continue to stick by the university (and even our horrific football team), because UI means much more to me than just athletics.
You're down in the series by two games. This year will be BSU's 10th straight victory. The Vandals won 12 straight over BSU, not 13. Your football team wins at a 40% clip. In other words, there is no "semblance of respect" to be brought back. They've historically been a joke. No AD, coach, or remodel can change that. The Vandal program is a perennial loser.

I guess my tongue-in-cheek argument fails then. Good job, sleuth.
Enjoy 'your' BSU victories and quit worrying so much about the non-issue Vandals.
And for all I care, they could take the entire UI athletics budget and put it into research initiatives and other academic purposes. I enjoy the football smack talk and rivalry (even if it's not much of a rivalry on the field anymore) as much as the next guy, but really, who cares?
In an ideal world, BSU moves 'up' to a tougher conference so everyone can really see if they are able to compete week after week after week. Idaho moves back to the Big Sky and plays better matched opponents and makes the division I jump sometime in the future if they're ever ready.
You admit they need to go back to the Big Sky. Thats the only logical thing you've ever said. And really who cares? Um, apparently you do, since your on here and you post about Vandal winning streaks. Typical Vandal, hypocritical and full of themselves.

If math is not your strong poing, I wouldn't be commenting on others.
12 victories and 13 years are two different things....I'll talk slower, since you're a donkey. If a BSU win was in 1981, add a streak of losses -- let's just say 12, and their next win was in 1994 that is a span of 13 years that they didn't win.
but I'm sure it's just more butt-logo vernacular. Anyhoo... holy cow! Talk about spin! I've never seen such spin. Idaho won 12 straight games, period. Whether it was accomplished in 12 or 13 years is immaterial. Grasping at straws is all that's left for the butt-logos, apparently. Congratulations on providing us with more fodder.
Submitted by marcsulf on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 12:16pm.
Are you a politician or a lawyer? The fact is that November 20 will be 15 years since Idaho's last win in that 12 win "streak", so I think maybe some of you "glory days" Vandals might want to consider giving it a rest.
Want some more numbers? Currently, the Broncos are the ones on a streak, having won 9 in a row versus Idaho. The closest the Vandals have gotten in that span is 24-10, and the average score has been 50-18. By comparison, 7 of the Vandals 12 wins during their "streak" were by a touchdown or less, with an average score of 35-19.
Submitted by CtDMonet on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 12:33pm.
I was not spinning, I was pointing out that JLandon had tried to compare years to wins. The Dude had specifically said years, and he was ridiculed for it.
Give it a rest. You tried to spin it, and you got caught. The butt-logos had a 12 game winning streak, which is soon to be outdone. Anyone up for a game of "Pin the Logo on the Vandal"?

As a person who was born and raised in North Idaho and graduated from BSU all of this talk about Idaho is very sad. I have a lot of friends and family that are Vandal graduates. It's sad that the alumni, school and state cannot put thier pride and ego to the side. Times change people!!!! The past tells us that Alabama is not going to dominate like they did 30 years ago because in the past they did not have to recruit against the likes of Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami and the rest. Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant owned the South back then but now Alabama is not even the best team in Alabama. A similar and just as realistic situation is going on with Idaho. How many "Blue Chip", "Yellow Chip" or any kind of "Chip" kid wants to go to Moscow, Idaho to play sports in today's environment. It is pure ego and "the past" that keeps Idaho alums in thier current state of mind. Even Washington State, with all that they reep from being a Pac 10 school, is having a hard, hard time in an environment very similar to Moscow being in Pullman only 8 miles away. The kids it takes to win at Idaho's level today have so many options available to them that Idaho cannot compete for the tier of player they need in order to win. When will Vandal Nation face the facts and realize that times change. Idaho NEEDS to be in the Big Sky...not because it would be shameful but because it is the right thing to do.
Our lives don't revolve around the football team 24-7. BSU only has a good football team and has nothing else to be excited about. At Idaho, we support all aspects of the university - academic and athletic. I loved my time at the University of Idaho.
Submitted by IdahoFowl on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 2:16pm.
I'm like you, I loved my time at the University of Idaho as well. It's a unique real college experience that I don't think many universities can replicate. However, I've also had plenty of friends and family that went to BSU and enjoyed their experience as well.
I'll never know what it's like to be an undergrad at BSU, and those that chose BSU will never know the experience that UofI provides. But I think we can all agree that both schools have excellent strengths and points of pride.

I went to BSU during that streak and it sucked. The Vandals were a good team...well at least better than BSU. But BSU had only been a University for a decade when that streak started. I love watching the Idaho game every year... I TiVo it, burn it to DVD and play it at all my BSU pregame parties...GO BSU!!

... about the age of the University at the time, it was all about coaching. Idaho had its 3 best coaches ever during that era: Dennis Ericson, Keith Gilbertson, and John L. Smith. Meanwhile, BSU had 2 of its worst coaches ever: Lyle Setencich and Skip Hall. Note that the Ericson-Gilbertson-Smith-Tomey era in Vandal football was the only period since 1905 where Idaho had more than 1 winning season in a row, and in that era they had 15. The Broncos, on the other hand, have only had 5 losing seasons in their history, and 3 of them were a direct result of the Setencich-Hall era. (1993 was actually Pokey Allen's first year, but he was working with what Skip Hall had left him). The other two losing seasons were their first 2 years as a D-IA program.

I, along with other fans think now is the time for the Vandals to drop football and concentrate on basketball. They are never going to raise the millions needed to spruce up the dome. The state (taxpayers), are picking up the tab for "life safety" issues, and that runs into the millions. Do like the Zags, concentrate on one sport, excel at it, stay in the Wac.
may not be an option if they don't play football as well as basketball. But dropping football or going back to FCS make sense economically and practically, if not emotionally to Vandals. However, I think ALL Vandals are realistic enough to not want to, or try to, go back to the PAC-10 (well, PAC-8 when they were in it in the distant past), so maybe they should also give up on the FBS idea. I'm NOT anti-vandal, but if they're going to stay in the WAC they really MUST improve. If not, I can imagine them getting booted from WAC same as they did from the PAC-8.

when the Vandals were in the conference, it was still the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC). That conference disbanded in 1959, and most of its members formed the new Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU). In 1968 the AAWU changed its name to the Pacific 8 (Pac-8). Idaho was not invited to join the AAWU when it was formed. See the Wikipedia article for more details.

As a Vandal alumni and a persistent fan, I believe this article largely described me and many others like me. It is tough to be a Vandal fan right now. I personally am the brunt of many jokes from my friends who are alumni of Utah State, Boise State, Montana, etc. that give me a hard time anytime they can. But, as The Dude said, Vandal pride isn't about whether the football team wins or not. It is about the school that I love and admire greatly. It is about the childhood pictures of me wearing Idaho gear as a gradeschooler. It is about being a third generation Vandal. Don't worry, my other grandfather went to BJC (and I don't mean that as a slam, that's where he went).
The point is that being a Vandal is far more than cheering for the football team. It is holding you school up and letting people know that you think the school is the best in the state of Idaho, if not the whole west. Of course, people will disagree with me, and rightfully so. But the point remains, Vandal pride has always been much deeper than whether or not the football team even plays on a given week. It is about professors, students, loyal alumni, and everything that goes on with all of those people. I care deeply about the University of Idaho, and I will contine to regardless of how horrible they are on the football field.
GO VANDALS

I'm a first generation Vandal, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University and still have strong feelings about the University and the people I met there and that work there. It is a great community and the success they deserve will come their way. They are going through some tough times right now, but the professors, students, loyal alumni, and the community people you fittingly speak so highly about will make it through and come out stronger. Will we ever be an elite football program like USC, Florida, Texas, Ohio State, Penn State, Nebraska, Alabama, etc. etc.? No. But, I do believe we will have success in our athletic program again and I believe we will continue to strive forward and excel in the area a university should excel: academics.
Everything about the U of I sucks and I mean everything. You can try to build yourselves up saying all sorts of inspiring things...the bottom line is that everywhere I go, the butt of jokes is you. Your not known to people back East for your Institution of Learning. Your known as perennial losers. Period. And thats nation wide. Your university is a dying breed and even during tough economic times Boise State is thriving. Building new structures, new research labs, new facilities.
I was a boy when the streak was happening, when Pokey Allen was dying. The Vandal fans were rude, obnoxious, and egocentric. You poured salt into the wounds, bragged and flexed your muscles. Your success in anything is over. You have nothing to look forward to. Memories is all you have and surely they taught you at U of I that success of the future is predicated on progression of the present. Even in tough times. BJC taught me that

You were cut deep in the past, eh? How sad for you. It's ironic for someone who's football team is doing well to be so bitter about a meaningless non-competing university. Why don't you get over your misperceptions of the past and just enjoy the current sucess of BSU football? Or, maybe some counseling?
Hah, on another note... I supposed BSU fans have never been rude or obnoxious either? Give me a break. All sorts of football fans are jerks at various points. UI, BSU, big schools, small schools. You're whining about people pouring salt into wounds, but you're doing it yourself. If it hurts so bad, then why do you do it in return? Hypocrite.
And, do yourself a favor and look up the academic statistics of BSU and UI and then shut your ignorant mouth when you realize which university has been the leader in the past, is currently on top, and will continue to do so in the future. This is not rhetoric or emotion or the sign of a dying breed. Don't kid yourself that UI football has anything to do with the sucess of the university (which a lot of BSU 'fans' seem to do...). UI is much more than football.
Submitted by tomellen on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 9:03am.
I'm so much more impressed with the classy responses by BSU fans when the UofI isn't doing so well. Your responses for example show so much more class and are not rude, obnoxious, or egocentric at all. Thanks for showing us the higher ground.
Get over yourself. UI Sucks? They don't boast an 8 percent four year graduation rate or a 24 percent graduation rate in six years. BSU's graduation rate dropped in a five year period. That is something to be embarrassed about. BSU has one of the worst graduation rates of Division I-A schools. And how many national merit scholars does BSU have again?
UI has made improvements on campus over the past decade too. The LLC dorms, the business and economics building, revamping of the classroom center, the commons...need we say more? Oh, hate to tell this to you, but Idaho had an enrollment increase.
The response I was looking for. Thanks for proving all my points right. God you guys are so 'blue" with envy its funny. I got my grad degree from Stanford, cant wait for you to tell me Idaho is the best educational school in the West...come on tell me losers.
Submitted by WhooptyDoo on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 9:50am.
I did not read any envy into any of the posts that followed yours. They simply proved that your points were unfounded. The last I checked, Stanford's football team was the laughing stock of the PAC-10, but no one is calling to say that the school sucks. You make no sense. What I did say was that Vandal pride is based on making U of I the best academic school in the west, not necessarily that it is. It is dispicable that you continue your Boise State rhetoric, but then throw in you have some degree from some other school. Wow, and you accuse Vandals of having a big ego. Look in the mirror egomanic!

I've made the Big Sky comment before. Big deal.
Anything else to add, smart guy?
Theres plenty more
Stay tuned Vandal there's so much more coming.

talk is cheap...
Math
If math is not your strong poing, I wouldn't be commenting on others.
12 victories and 13 years are two different things....I'll talk slower, since you're a donkey. If a BSU win was in 1981, add a streak of losses -- let's just say 12, and their next win was in 1994 that is a span of 13 years that they didn't win.
Not Sure What A "Poing" is,
but I'm sure it's just more butt-logo vernacular. Anyhoo... holy cow! Talk about spin! I've never seen such spin. Idaho won 12 straight games, period. Whether it was accomplished in 12 or 13 years is immaterial. Grasping at straws is all that's left for the butt-logos, apparently. Congratulations on providing us with more fodder.
Nice spin.
Accountant not Lawyer
I was not spinning, I was pointing out that JLandon had tried to compare years to wins. The Dude had specifically said years, and he was ridiculed for it.
Caught Up In Semantics?
Give it a rest. You tried to spin it, and you got caught. The butt-logos had a 12 game winning streak, which is soon to be outdone. Anyone up for a game of "Pin the Logo on the Vandal"?
I didnt say that
better get your facts straight Vandal
So Sad the Past
FYI, Vandal pride has very little to do with football...
and a whole lot more to do with the experience of attending school at the University of Idaho.
No one is 'stuck in the past' being prideful about the UI. UI alums are who they are and prideful because of their university experience.
Football is one small aspect, university pride is a whole different matter.
Go UI and Go Vandals!
Agreed
Our lives don't revolve around the football team 24-7. BSU only has a good football team and has nothing else to be excited about. At Idaho, we support all aspects of the university - academic and athletic. I loved my time at the University of Idaho.
Both schools have plenty to be excited about
I'm like you, I loved my time at the University of Idaho as well.
BSU was barely a 4 year school
I went to BSU during that streak and it sucked. The Vandals were a good team...well at least better than BSU. But BSU had only been a University for a decade when that streak started. I love watching the Idaho game every year... I TiVo it, burn it to DVD and play it at all my BSU pregame parties...GO BSU!!
It was not...
... about the age of the University at the time, it was all about coaching.
I, along with other fans
I, along with other fans think now is the time for the Vandals to drop football and concentrate on basketball. They are never going to raise the millions needed to spruce up the dome. The state (taxpayers), are picking up the tab for "life safety" issues, and that runs into the millions. Do like the Zags, concentrate on one sport, excel at it, stay in the Wac.
staying in the wac
may not be an option if they don't play football as well as basketball.
Actually,
when the Vandals were in the conference, it was still the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC).
Vandal Fan
GO VANDALS
Amen.
Amen.
Well said
I'm a first generation Vandal, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University and still have strong feelings about the University and the people I met there and that work there.
Yawn
BJC taught me that
Cry me a river... it sounds like you're a little bitter.
Anything else you'd like to discuss?
That's why...
I'm so much more impressed with the classy responses by BSU fans when the UofI isn't doing so well. Your responses for example show so much more class and are not rude, obnoxious, or egocentric at all. Thanks for showing us the higher ground.
Whine whine whine
Get over yourself. UI Sucks? They don't boast an 8 percent four year graduation rate or a 24 percent graduation rate in six years. BSU's graduation rate dropped in a five year period. That is something to be embarrassed about. BSU has one of the worst graduation rates of Division I-A schools. And how many national merit scholars does BSU have again?
UI has made improvements on campus over the past decade too. The LLC dorms, the business and economics building, revamping of the classroom center, the commons...need we say more? Oh, hate to tell this to you, but Idaho had an enrollment increase.
Exactly
The response I was looking for. Thanks for proving all my points right. God you guys are so 'blue" with envy its funny. I got my grad degree from Stanford, cant wait for you to tell me Idaho is the best educational school in the West...come on tell me losers.
You don't make any sense
I did not read any envy into any of the posts that followed yours. They simply proved that your points were unfounded. The last I checked, Stanford's football team was the laughing stock of the PAC-10, but no one is calling to say that the school sucks. You make no sense. What I did say was that Vandal pride is based on making U of I the best academic school in the west, not necessarily that it is. It is dispicable that you continue your Boise State rhetoric, but then throw in you have some degree from some other school. Wow, and you accuse Vandals of having a big ego. Look in the mirror egomanic!
Stanford is...
the laughingstock of the PAC TEN? Really? Wow ok...coming from a Vandal.
You didn't read the post.
He said the football team sucked, not the university.
