wow
So, over the next four years BSU has 17 non-conferece games scheduled and 3 of them are against BCS opponents.
I love Boise State but face it, this is a problem.
Yep, Pathetic
It's becoming tougher and tougher to defend BSU's schedule. Even if by chance BSU finds itself in another BCS game, their schedule will have hardly prepared them to play well in it.
One word
OBAMA!
BSU Football Schedule
These early games against lessor opponent do nothing to prepare the team to play against truly talented schools from the sec, big 10 or the pac 10. BSU needs to
beef up this schedule as soon as possible to ever be considered a true football power team. Then they need to win these games on a consistent basis
Cost
There's alot of money to be made in football!! That single payout, 225K, is more than I spent on graduate school in four years, but it will probably equal that by the time I pay off the interest. Glad I had a free ride in college. Go Bronco's and start playing some powerhouse teams.
Try....
Try to get the powerhouse teams to come to Bronco Stadium for game one! They don't want to come people, BSU has to schedule at times who they can plug in. You people just assume that Gene is scheduling patsies on purpose, but you have no sight into the actual process of getting teams to come here and play. Your perspective on the situation is limited as a fan and so your opinions tend to be shallow.
I'm all for getting PAC10, MWC and other teams like that in here to start out the season, but this is a tough place to play (we are good and they know it) and Boise is an isolated city where travel (and travel costs) can be tough.
Sadly I would have to agree with Eaglewing......
It's easy to blame good ole Gene. Many say he does it so we're a winning team and the stadium will be packed. But then we're not good enough to do well against BCS teams. As Bluephan says college football is a business. Nothing more and nothing less. I think we're pretty lucky to be where we are considering our humble beginnings. My hope is that we can continue to grow at this rate. One of these days BCS will have to fold and admit us and teams like us into the race legitimately. Now we're kind of the red headed step child. We'll get there. Just be patient. We've already had a couple of "miracles" happen ( dare I say Oklahoma? ) and I'm sure we'll have more.
GO BRONCOS
AMEN EAGLEWING AND BOISEROBERT!!!!
Until BSU's stadium grows to at least 45,000 capacity (and it eventually will) BSU, Gene or anyone else is not going to get any of the big boys to commit to a home and home schedule. It's a business people.....WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!! Remember Rome wasn't built in a day and GENE has brought us a long way down the path already!!!!
boise state fan
That thinks this is just horrid. 225,000 for an ego boost huh? Pathetic. Thats why the #### I am paying so much for school....wow!!!
?
You think big programs are afraid of playing us in Boise? That is crazy... It is about MONEY, Oregon will be coming here next year and it will be the least attended game of Oregon's year.... but it will set a new attendance record for BSU...
Arguing with yourself...
Aren't you sort of arguing with yourself? Who said the big programs are afraid of playing in Boise? Did I miss something?
Eaglewing, boiserobert, and slcbronco all IDIOTS
Stop with these silly excuses! WE PLAY A WEAK SCHEDULE! La tech is rolling in Miss. State this weekend. I'm sure they will have all of their faithful 17,000 at that game. Gene has countless opportunities to play 3 for 2's just like fresno does. But he doesn't. We play a soft soft schedule. Unfortunatley there are those fans out there that like having a paper champ. I would rather see a respectable schedule and possibly 9-3 or 8-4 than 10-2 and 11-1 against uc davis, idaho state, new mexico state, utah state, idaho...all games that don't count in my book. We are stuck playing some horrible teams in conference...we should take every opportunity to play a strong schedule outside of it.
finally...
Tanakabeard finally stops the stupidness that big teams are afraid to play at BSU! I can assure you BCS schools are not afraid to play many teams...if any at all. Most athletes love challenges and BCS athletes hardly see us as one
scheduling
Five out of nine teams in the WAC have at least two BCS games scheduled this year. The four that don't is Boise State, Idaho, New Mexico State, and Utah State. That's right, Boise State schedule wise is mentioned with the WAC bottom feeders.
Gene isn't the only one to blame for pampering the schedule. Coach Pete is too. There I said it. I remember one time in an interview with Caves and Prater he was asked, "if you could play any team, who would it be?" He said, San Diego State.
Now, nothing against San Diego State but why not pick someone better. Playing better competition consistently with the great coaching staff we have can only make you better. His reasoning for San Diego State is because Boise State recruits down there so much. Well, who wouldn't like to see BSU play USC for once?? Even Idaho played them for crying out loud! Fresno went toe to toe with them a couple years ago! Fresno State can hang with BCS teams every year and one reason is experience. I'm not saying we need Pat Hill's "anyone, anytime, anywhere" motto, but isn't there some sort of compromise?
I just want Boise State to raise it's level of competition some. Otherwise how else do we know how good they really are? We're definately not making a BCS game every year to find out.
SOS
BSU has an SOS of 107. That is WITH the Oregon game.
Pretty big deal to win 9-11 games each season.
Enough said.
How can anyone...
... accurately report a team's SOS before a single game has been played?
jjcbronco You're a dolt!
And you show it when, you praise and wish for Fresno's schedule. Tell me, what has that scheduling strategy got FSU? A lot of conference championships over the last 6-7 years? A considerable amount of more media attention? A trip to a BCS bowl? and a tremendous increase in recruiting power as a result? DOLT!!
Schedule
New guy in town, to schedule the BCS teams is not difficult, most will do 2 for 1, home team keeping all the revenue. As far as BCS teams not wanting to play BSU at home because of the fear of losing, name one.
Texas Tech, Colorado, Georgia, LSU, UCLA, etc. would love to do a 2 for 1 with you. Fresno State is the only non BCS team that gets my respect, and only non BCS team that has national respect.
Playing one or two BCS teams a year is a joke of a schedule. BCS teams play 8-9 BSC teams a year.
Yes BSU beat Oklahoma, and. Stanford beat USC last year, and. Upsets happen. Play and beat even 4 BCS teams in one year, then BSU will start to get some national respect.
The WAC has become nothing more than a glorfied Big Sky Conference.
RE:BCS teams play 8-9 BCS teams a year
They also have BCS budgets every year.
They also get money from BCS games every year.
Under the current system Boise is the most successful non-BCS school of the past 7 years. It doesn't do us any favors to play a schedule like Fresno State does, look where it has gotten them.
That being said, I would like to see us not schedule a game with a 1-AA school, and maybe play someone like a decent mid-major from the MWC or CUSA, or possibly a BCS school like Baylor or Colorado or TAMU that would do a home and home with us.
IdahoFowl
What, BSU is the most sucessful non BCS school under what current system? Uof Utah was the first team to break into and win a BCS bowl game, the rule for which non BCS teams are now able to play in a BCS bowl came about because of the BYU in 2001, first known as the BYU rule, Fresno State has played in and beat more BCS trams than BSU, Fresno State has more players in the NFL than BSU, and has the national respect which
BSU is looking for.
BSU plays and beats more teams ranked 95 and up than any other team. Impressive.
Michael987 -- By any measure BSU = the most successful mid major
Who has the most conference championships?
Who has the best winning percentage?
Are you sure about Fresno having more players in the NFL? Also, what does putting players in the NFL have to do with college football? Those NFL players sure haven't helped them amass a winning record against the Broncos, or to achieve a string of conference championships.
I can find any random person on the street and ask them who won the Fiesta bowl and 99% of the general population will know what I'm talking about.
Can I ask some random person which mid major almost beat USC in 2005 and get an answer?
There's not a single mid major program out there that doesn't aspire to achieve the same success BSU has achieved. This is coming from a UofI alum.
Michael987 be realistic
First of all, it's a moot point about BSU playing 8-9 BCS games per year. Or even 4 every year. Obviously, Boise doesn't play in a BCS conference so it's impossible.
However, they can improve their schedule by simply playing more BCS teams then they do, beat their WAC foes, and continue to win conference championships. There's no reason they can't strive for these goals every single season. They do, except for the scheduling part. They don't need to play 4 BCS teams every year but playing at least two and sometimes three would be great. In the meantime also achieving their other goals.
It's hard to envy Fresno State's non-conference schedule most years but the fact is they play those teams very competetively almost every year. The problem with Fresno is they usually trip up within their own conference schedule. They get too amped up for the big time teams and then underestimate smaller WAC teams. This is a coaching problem.
This doesn't mean we need a schedule like Fresno's. If we played two BCS teams and then a team like Utah and Southern Miss. along with the conference schedule in one season is pretty good. If they go 11-1 with that schedule that's very respectable and still BCS bowl worthy.
future
I keep seeing Oregon State at Boise in 2010 and Boise at OSU in 2012 on Boise`s future scedules but it does not show up on Oregon States web page. They were showing Louisville on that 2010 date. So what goes is that scedule set or just a guess.
