Vandals hope continuity translates to wins : comments

Hahahahaaaaa!!

Win every game? SERIOUSLY?! You have a bunch of returning starters who've never had a single winning season, yet you expect them to win them ALL?!!

unrealistic

Well, Akey is taking the Vandals in the right direction, but a winning season in the next two years is pretty darn unlikely.

Goals

Dear BroncosFreakinRock,
Ever heard of "setting your goals high"? While it may be unrealistic, at least they are being positive and reaching for something. Think about what they've been through as a team...I'm surprised they still have kids wanting to play for them. Also, WTF are you doing posting crap at 3am? What is your profession....bartending? Wait, of course it is...you went to BSU. Troll.

High goals, low logic

Well, I want to go to the moon, but no matter how hard I jump I'm still right here. Just to be clear, I do hope Idaho can pull together and win a few more. I have never called a blowout win against a crap team "great" in sincerity.

And what's wrong with 3 am? I always do my best programming between midnight and 3 am. And it would have been a better insult to claim I was a trucker. Bartending has no logical connection to attending BSU.

Go Vandals!

The Vandals are going to surprise some teams this year. With a coach that actually cares, a team that doesn't think they deserve respect even though they didn't win a game, and a re-amped fan base that took a year to recover from the Erickson fiasco, the Vandals will do much better than last year. I am not saying they are going to win the WAC or go to a BCS bowl, but I would be very surprised if it was a repeat of last year's 1-11 showing. GO VANDALS!

HMM??? SURPRISE???????? WHAT? WHO? WHERE?

Better than 1-11 ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ DONT' THINK SO...but maybe just maybe you might be able to squeak out a win over that IAA powerhouse ISU and that is because you play them in the "spud cellar" and it will be packed to capacity with your loyal fans. Oops, a mathematical faux pas there..erasey erasey! One simple question? Does Big Sky ring a bell? Its reality!!!!

Was this an attempt

Why do Bozo State fans feel the need to attack Idaho with stupid comments that have no backing other than Bozo rhetoric? People used to ask me why I never cheered for the Donkeys when they weren't playing Idaho. Guess what, thanks for answering that question LibLeft. Besides, who made you such an expert on Vandal football.
"Don't think so"...keep thinking, it obviously has gotten you nowhere so far.
P.S. Potatoes largely aren't grown in North Idaho. You might want to think of a better name for the Kibbie Dome. Might want to try wheat silo or grain elevator or garnet cache. See thinking comment. GO VANDALS!

vandals and broncos

There are MANY on both sides who are of the "my team rules and your team sucks" variety. But there are those of us who are more rational, too. Don't damn all Broncos and I won't damn all Vandals, OK?

I'd much rather have the conference title settled between the Vandals and Broncos than I would between the Broncos and Bulldogs, or Broncos and Rainbows, or whatever.

We are serious, very serious, about supporting the Broncos...by sitting on the 50 for football and half court for basketball...by giving money....by going to all the games.

We cheered for the Vandals when they played in Hum Bowl a decade ago or so. 98??

I'll hope the Vandals win every game except one. But I also don't expect that to happen any time soon.

Honu

Your attitude is refreshing. I don't expect a stellar season from the Vandies either...but I love your thought on the Broncos and Vandals comepeting for the title. What a great way to showcase Idaho and it's universities. I like that you mentioned you have supported your Broncos on all levels...
I must say though, your kind/breed is rare...

Thank you

Thank you for being the voice of reason. It is finally good to hear someone take a stance from the other side of the aisle that both sides can agree with. You are absolutely correct that there are many people that have the destructive mentality of "my team rules and your team sucks." Sadly, I have been one of them from time to time. However, it would be nice to have the mentality you have expressed. I would like to cheer for the Broncos when they are not playing the Vandals, but I am sick of getting blasted by Bronco fans about how bad Vandal football is when I cheer for my alma mater.

At the risk of sounding extremely cheesy, isn't it about time we all just get along?

WHAT MAKES ME AN "expert on Vandal football?"

Simple answer...your LOSING RECORD, year after year !! And while we are on the subject of "spud cellar"...when is the U going to stop paying off the NCAA and meet the Div IA seating capacity for the "spud cellar"? FYI-- A 30,000 seating capacity for Div IA is required. How much did that cost the alum under the table. Oops, that was the WATER RESOURCE CENTER in Boise. Darn, another little U of I faux pas. Answer that one Donkey lover. So you want a better name for your "SPUD CELLAR? Hmm, ok THE LITTLE KIDDIE HOUSE OF HORRORS ! Actually it doesn't even fit the definition of a dome. It's designed like a giant WW II QUONSET HUT not a dome.

Grumpy Old Man

Need I say more. You probably are not from Idaho originally. Given your postings, I would be willing to say that you lack any education beyond a grade school level as well. Are you still thinking?

My prediction is...

The Vandals will double their wins from last year. They will win 2 games. Not too bad for a 2nd year head coach.

I think

the Vandals have a chance to go .500, it all depends on how much progress has been made at QB and if the D-line can step it up. If they could pull .500 off after the horrible year that was last year, I'd be ecstatic.

I think people have every right to question them this year, but I hope those same people are ready to eat crow if they're wrong.

WHAT? .500?

You need talent first. Smoke and mirrors just want get it done in Div IA. Again, does Big Sky ring a bell. If I were an alum of U of I I would start hammering the school president and AD to change conferences. Truthfully who wants to go to a school that ranks 120 in Div IA and the future in athletic programs looks grim, not a great recruiting tool. Good luck on trying to accomplish your "1" win.
ps: Div IA rankings only go down to 120

Good thing you're not an alum.

Probably not an alum of any school, but that's beside the point.

Any school can always use more talent, but did you happen to catch any Idaho games last year besides the BSU game? We were in most of the games we played, until a turnover or pick-6 put us out of reach for the win. Look at the results of almost any of the conference games. Like I said before, more consistent QB play (less pick-6's) and more pressure on the opposing QB will net us at least 3 more wins. We also return almost every starter on offense.

Again, this is all speculation, but there are lots of indications that Enderle will be much better this year, and hopefully stay healthy. I just want the season to start already, I'm getting sick of waiting, and I'm pretty sure everybody else is too.

And one more thing. The Big Sky is in Idaho's past, not their future. Get it through your head.

True

From the few games I saw last year, Idaho did play pretty well in the first half. Therein lies the problem, namely the second half. The BSU-Idaho game was a perfect example. Halftime score was 17-14...

Point that didn't go unnoticed

I am sure the Idaho coaching staff noticed the same downfall, the second half. They will have the players in better shape, have a better gameplan, and most importantly, get the players to know that the game doesn't end at halftime. Teams that allow Idaho to hang in and have a 3 point lead or deficit, will be sorry this season. In Akey we trust! GO VANDALS!

At least...

...the kids played four quarters of football. Yea, lots of mistakes were made, but I don't recall seeing a game last year where they gave up...compare that to the year before when it was clear the coaching staff gave up early in the 3rd quarter several times and the kids just naturally followed. I credit that to Akey...he stays fired up and seems to genuinely have fun out there (which apparently annoys Boise fans for some reason). The kids are feeding off his attitude and as long as he keeps it up I see the kids playing hard for him.

I'm a Boise State fan and I think Akey is great

Good attitude, seems to be sending the right message to his players. I look forward to keeping a good rivalry going.

Yup,

and wasn't there a BSU TD pass right before halftime?

That second half was pretty ugly, though. The first drive of that half was good but the fumble in the red zone just killed us. I think we had like 50 yards of total offense after that.

"Smoke and mirrors just want get it.."

Did you just say smoke and mirrors wont get it done in Div 1A? HAHAHA!!! Did you see the Fiesta Bowl?? Or were you not a fan of the Donkeys until after?

YOUR DEFINITION OF SMOKE AND MIRRORS?

I really don't consider the 8th ranked BCS team in Div IA a "smoke and mirror team"! Isn't amazing you can't down grade the Broncos any better than that. I've got probably 15 more years in my life time and if I am lucky I am betting I want live to see the U beat BSU again in football. That will make it 2023. Darn, the 25 straight year of losing for the U of I !

You are a bitter man.

Just because BSU lost to ECU and spoiled all your pathetic little dreams doesn't mean you have to take it out on anybody here. I'd be willing to bet money that BSU isn't ranked again for quite some time.

Wow...

I assume from your comment about having "15 more years left" you are not a smart-ace student as I expected. You are simply a bitter old man who obviously has nothing to do with his day besides hate. If your only hope for your final years is to see a football team (a bunch of kids playing a game) lose year after year...well, then I pity you.

Good day sir...

LibLeft???

Do you even know what that nickname means? Did you even graduate high school? You are the reason people make fun of Idaho. You are the reason when we tell people where we are from they say, "Oh, Iowa is so nice". Um, yeah.

I love how Bronco fans contiue to cling on to the whole Water Center "scandal". What a joke. It's in the past, and I could give a crap about it. I'm not ashamed of that in the least. And making fun of the Kibbie Dome? Yeah, cause the SmurfTurf is sooooo classy. Gives me a damn headache.

Please come up with some fresh material LibLeft....you are boring.

Brilliant Sicko duh duh duh

And now we are going to play the education game...shoot, no competition on your part...and you repeated the 3rd grade how many times???? your "dueling banjo inheritance" is showing. And what are you doing watching any event at Bronco Stadium and getting a headache from the blue turf? Now that is brilliant...HAPPY HEADACHES

After rock bottom

you can only go up.

And that's what this staff, team , and true fans (not bandwagons) intend to do. Sure, we aren't going to win every game, but you'd be surprised what a big heart with nothing to lose can do.

GO VANDALS!

That's the great thing about coming back from the bottom!

We don't really have to worry about bandwagon fans! :)

Go Vandals!

Win every game?!

people are going to think he's smoking dope!

FANS

Ha Ha! I absolutely love to see the Vandal supporters on here. You guys have class and rock! Winning football teams do not define a university OR a city...and I think there are some Broncos that need to be reminded of that. Boise has gotten so out of control with the Bronco f'n Nation crap. And don't even get me started on the Statesman and their complete bias of other universities in this "great" state. I was the laughing stock of my out of town friends when I told them that the big news last year in Boise was the Ian Johnson Cheerleader wedding story. Hilarity, really.
I swear if I see one more lifted, muddy 2C truck with a BroncoNation sticker, I'm going to go postal.
It takes class and pride to be a Vandal...anybody can be a Donkey. Let me just stir the pot a little more....VANDALS IN '08....O in "08!!!! Whoo hoo...this is fun.

They'll win more...

you can't stay on the absolute bottom forever.
The only real question is can the vandies win consistently? Over the course of their history I think only the 80's and early 90's saw consistent winning seasons. The 30s-50s saw no winning seasons and they've struggled nearly every year since going D1a.
What makes it really tough for the vandies to get enough quality kids is location. Yes, I've had this conversation with UI alum alot and yes they mostly don't get it. WSU is so close that if a quality kid is recruited by both schools and is looking for a rural school experience is more likely to attend WSU due to it's being in the PAC10 and actually has a shot at national tv and national championsip. WSU also has research dollars and academics.
Focusing on facilities will help, quality coaches will help, but can those overcome the legitimate issues facing consistent vandy success(location, competition, budget)?
Sadly, I don't think so. I won't be surprised at a winning season here and there but with WSU, UM, UNR, BSU, OSU, UW as regional competition for the same recruits it will be tough to win consistently.
Akey is the best thing for your program in 10 years, Spears is not.

Recruiting

How did they get decent recruits back in the day? I know, I know...everything about the sport/competition is different now, but have they always had trouble finding good athletes? Just wondering cause I clearly don't know the entire history of the sport as some do.

Not sure, but it may have something to do with money.

yes, money is part of it

Back in the day the Vandals were the only real game in the state. And they were in 1AA then. They didn't happen to make it to 1AA championship like BSU and ISU, but they did well. But it is hard to get people to put money into "East Nowhere" (which is just east of "West Nowhere", AKA Pullman).

Back in the long ago when the Vandals were in the PAC-10 they were the perennial doormat. So they moved out of that conference, and eventually to 1AA. Were it not for BSU going to 1A, it isn't likely the Vandals would have made it either. In fact, if memory serves, Vandals moving up was a condition of the State Board on Broncos moving up.

Yes, money talks, BS walks. Always has, always will.

seems to me

there are a bunch of fans on both sides (Vandals/Broncos) who can't get over the college days rivalry mentality. it seems pretty silly to constantly bash a fellow Idaho team. I am a Vandal and used to do my share of Bronco bashing.....but I (sort of) grew up a bit and am secure enough in my manhood to root for the Broncos wholeheartedly except when they play the Vandals. it is exciting to me to see any Idaho team have success.....it is great for the state. I would love to see a few more of the BSU fans in Boise join me in not only rooting for the Broncos but hoping the Vandals can really start to see some good things coming out of a more consistent football program. great for the WAC too BTW......

right on, dude

I too will always cheer for a WAC team against an outsider, and always for Idaho except against BSU. And for ISU and LCSC and CSI for that matter. Let's let people know there are things in Idaho besides potatoes (and hops and barley and onions and mountains and wolves and....)

I'm with you OICURMT2

Although I will admit it took me a while to get over all the crap the Vandals used to dish out in their golden years. They complain about the Bronco fans now, but the Vandals had their years when they were also unbearable.
I'm hoping Akey is successful...just not quite successful enough to beat the Broncos.

Reply to bandwagon...

honu started the reply but didn't quite get there.
Before moving to D1a UofI(and Boise St.) didn't compete against WSU for more than WSU's 3rd stringers if at all. They competed against the UMs, EWUs, BSUs, ISUs and MSUs of the world. They could get a good share of those guys with the academic heritage and the fact that there are far more decent (D1aa talent) players in the world that good-great(D1a talent) players. But, even then UI was a sub .500 all time winning % school. But, they had good years in the Big Sky. Also a correction, they weren't in the Pac 10, they were in the Pac 8 and it was during the 30+ years of no winning season that they got bounced out.
Now, having moved to D1a they compete directly with WSU, BSU, UW, OSU, OU, BYU, Utah, Wyoming, Utah St and Nevada for recruits. The sheer proximity of WSU is a killer for recruiting because they can't out sell the Cougs for just about anything.

It's ok Bandwagon that you don't know their history, I had to look it up one day to shut the traps of Vandies talking about the streak. Their 12 games over us pale to 30+ years in a row of not winning. The conversation gets real quiet at that point(wait for it).
I don't get the moniker bandwagon. It eludes me as to how a school is to truly grow it's fanbase without the non-student/alum fans. You have to have bandwagon fans to grow, sure many will jump off when losing and that's ok, because those that stay have added to your core fanbase.

Thanks

Thank you for the history, I guess I could have taken the time to research. Interesting. Some fair points on your observations of "Bandwagon" fans...however, try on someone else's shoes for just one football season...and I guarantee you would be wanting to carry a gun in your car. I'm all for college rivalries, I think it's hilarious actually. But if the "new" BSU fans are allowed to show their "spirit" "support", what have you...the Vandals fans should be allowed to as well. Let's face it, UofI does have it's share of legacies. It's a great school and a lot of great families have gone there. So when I proudly display my Vandal flag on my car before the BSU/UofI game and the "new" BSU fans do such classy things as: flip me off, yells obscenities out their windows, vandalize my car, etc....it starts to grate on a person's sanity. Yes, I do remember the "supposed" winning streak and I do remember what it was like to watch the BSU/UofI game back in the day when we trampled all over the Broncs. However, I was also there the day the Broncos ended the streak and beat us in the Kibbie Dome. I clearly remember how silent it was in that dome as one of the male cheerleaders from BSU ran past our fan side with the BSU flag waving. It was crazy, but on some level, it was good for us. Good for us to feel the sting. I am glad to have been a part of the "great" years...and I'm glad to watch them struggle to rebuild. Now...if my attitude could just rub off a little on some of these "new" BSU fans who think the world revolves around Ian Johnson. Who have told me I don't have a right to fly my flag or wear my alma mater colors. Frankly, I've only been back to Boise a couple years and I'm just fed up. Fed up to the point where I don't give a crap if we beat BSU...if anyone else does, it's the greatest day ever.....

Wake up people....

I understand the passionate hate of one institution towards the other, but that doesn't get you guys anywhere.
To Bronco fans: stop the Zabransky trashing and move on, and realize that the WAC is the best fit for the school(look at how inconsistent the team performed last year). I'm a BSU alum, but I'm ashamed that the fans of my own school have to be given a hit on the head in order to get a reality check.
To Vandal fans: Boise State is not the only football program in the state of Idaho that has bandwagon fans. U of I's bandwagon fans refused to come out over the years until "conquering hero" Erickson returned 2 years ago. After he left, the attendence at the home games dropped the following year, including a mere 3,000 in the finale against Utah State (I understand that everyone may have been gone because it was on Thanksgiving weekend, but you get the idea). If you think your loyal to the Vandals, then why not attend their games? If you want the Vandals to win, here's a solution: HELP THEM OUT! I'm sure they would appreciate it if you actually attend their games, other than just the rivalry game, maybe even having some of you move up to Moscow would help their confidence level go up as well. And in case you were wondering, my degree is way more valuable than most of you will ever understand. Why do you Vandals downgrade BSU's education when none of their teams are violating any academic rules? Are you worried that one day BSU's education will surpass Univ. of Idaho's education?
Fix your school's problems first. You'll feel much better about yourselves in the long run.
