Risch claims his special session produced biggest tax cut, opponents say that's bogus : comments

Ok. Risch is a coporate lawyer who raised taxes!

His ad was BS. He gave wealthy out-of-state land owners tax breaks by hiking the sales tax on Idahoans to 6%, including the tax on groceries.

He did nothing but shift taxes as the article implies. He shifted the tax burden to those who could least afford it, the working class.

He added an additional 1% to the tax on groceries and did nothing about it until the NEXT session when he supported a piddly tax credit on groceries after the fact, not at the cash register.

He is an arrogant self-serving lawyer who couldn't win Ada County because we know him best.

I hope his opponents go after him for his deceitful advertising.

One additional thing about Risch's platform

You deserve the government you elect.

Risch is a liar

Just before he had to vacate the Gov's office, there was a little scandal about some state gov. department heads giving bonuses to their top workers at the end of the year. Risch jumped on them for doing that, saying it was the wrong thing to do (wrong to reward best workers, you know he has been a politician too long when he says things like that dontcha?) So what did little Jimmy do? Check out where his staff went. He "ordered" the commerce dept. to hire his secretary at the highest pay level possible. Never mind there were no job openings and the dept. had been trying to get the legislature to authorize more people for years - he just ordered that she be hired at a certain salary, period. Little Lyin Jimmy figures the public is never, ever gonna hear about what he did for his own staff, so he can go to the press and scream about how unfair it was for other dept. heads to give out those little bonuses of a few hundred dollars while he orders the creation of a totally new job for his secretary at about $40,000 a year for however long she wants to keep working! Thats Jim Risch. Screw the people - I'll do what I damn well please, no matter how crooked it is, and I'll burn anyone under me who tries to do the same. Hypocrit. Liar. Bad for Idaho.

Of course he is. You couldn't win if you told the truth.

Americans don't want to know the truth. Look at what the repugs are doing to Reverend Wright.

Don't you think we have a good reason to cut this man down

He is of the worst kind, he is racist. Even Oprah stop going to see him years ago. Obama just stop because he is trying to run for President other wise do you really think he would of stopped?

Have you actually listened to a whole speach?

Put into context the "sound bites" the pundits push out there. The man is quite intellegint.
He was a marine, he fought for this country and loves this country. Heck, I think we should all listen to what he has to say.

it's known as double speak

or lies.

Thanks for the reply. I am disgusted by Risch.

Iwas wondering if I was the only one who, in mind, hadn't left for the weekend.

I

Interesting, a certain vacuous bunch on line tonight

They care more about RV's than their elected officials. I suspect they belong to one party.

Oh, you said it all already

I even agree with you tonight. Risch will not get my vote.

Lighten up a little, sometimes it's just nice to discuss other ideas with people. The paper does report on more than just politics. Also, Mali would be surprised to find out that she is a pube.

CHECK RISCH'S RECORD SINCE 1969

AH YES CHICKEN LITTLE'S LIES COMES HOME TO ROOST...AND WHY DID THEY VOTE HIM OUT OF CONGRESS A FEW YEARS AGO...DUH..LETS PUT IT THIS WAY..DID YOU EVER SEE A LAWYER/POLITICIAN RUNNING FOR OFFICE THAT DIDN'T LIE ABOUT THEIR RECORD..DUH..JIMMY BOY IS ONE OF THE "BIGGEST AND BESTEST"..ASK HIM ABOUT HIS RANGE LAND ON COLE ROAD..PLAY THE BLM LOOP HOLES..DUH..NOW MAY BE THE SLUTSMAN WILL DO THEIR JOB AND DIG INTO HIS PAST..DUH .. HAS JIMMY BOY BURNED A FEW BRIDGES???? HE'LL FIT RIGHT IN WITH THE GOOD OLD BOYS OF WASHINGTON..WE DON'T NEED THIS POLITICAL PRIMA DONNA REPRESENTING IDAHO

Ouch!

Hey, ronlea... this is off-topic, but ALL CAPS is the equivalent of SHOUTING out here in the make-believe Binary Land.

You are certainly free to continue your SHOUTING, but you should be aware that lots of folks tend to tune out the shouters.

(No offense intended. I'm not pickin' a fight.)

On topic: Risch has never been a congressman.

bikeboy

Say that again please. I didn't catch it all, my ears are ringing.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?!?!?!

Boy these internets iz hard!

Not a truck, but a series of tubes.

No vote for Jim "shell game" Risch!

I will never vote for Jim Risch. I do think of him often though, every time I pay the 20% tax increase on my grocery bill.

But Wait!

What would you expect LaRocco to say? He's a typical Liberal politician...his test for accuracy is essentially, "Did anyone to the Right of ME say it? Then it's wrong!"

Actually listen to Larry LaRocco

If you actually want to read and listen to what Larry LaRocco believes then I would suggest checking out his website rather than the blatherings of occams_chainsaw. Yesterday, he held an online town hall with over 100 attendees in which he addressed a broad range of issues of concern to Idahoans. If you click on the townhall link on the front page of the website, you can find an online version of yesterday's meeting (note video lasts about one hour). An informed electorate is a powerful force in our country and you owe it to yourself and to your fellow citizens to inform yourself about the different candidates.

I doubt Jim Risch would ever put himself in front of the citizens of Idaho the way that Larry LaRocco has been doing for over a year now. His "working for the Senate" campaign has already had nearly two dozen different jobs across Idaho in which he meets with the employees and discusses the issues of relevance to them in their daily lives. LaRocco has done several online Q&As at a number of progressive blogs and will continue this practice throughout the campaign. Jim Risch spends his time flying around the state on corporate jets and hobnobbing with the wealthy elites. Jim Risch loans his own campaign $380,000 because he thinks he can buy a Senate seat. Larry LaRocco has raised funds from nearly 2000 individuals across our state. It is time for Idahoans to wake up and realize that just because a Senatorial candidate gets the (R) seal of approval does not mean he will actually represent our interests in DC.

Risch is a lying scumbag...

I guess that makes him a perfect candidate for Idaho.

When are we going to realize...

That they are ALL lying scumbags! It is a pre-requisite for wanting the job in the first place. Zeke and Farang, I hope you are getting a check from the dems central committee because you spout their drivel better than anyone I know. It used to be just national races, but now it is creeping down to state and local levels of office. The common factor with these people is greed and ego. It doesn't matter one bit what party they are from.

You see Cyc, it's like this

Democrats don't CLAIM to be fiscally responsible, don't claim moral and ethical superiority, the Republicans like Risch DO. It's not the lies so much as the hypocricy behind those lies.

Grandjester

In my opinion, it's the unbelievable arrogance.

Nuff said!

1) “We will work together to lead the House of Representatives with a commitment to integrity, to civility, and to fiscal responsibility.” – Speaker-Elect Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Press Release, November 16, 2006

2) "And if you agree that it is a moral responsibility to leave the world a better place for our children and grandchildren, vote for a Democrat for president. And if you believe that we need to restore American moral authority in the world and at home, elect a Democratic president." - Howard Dean (D-Uranus), Radio Address, January 5, 2008.

3) "The Democratic Party is committed to real ethics reform and meaningful campaign finance reform that protects our rights and ensures that elected officials act ethically -- not just within the law, but within the spirit of the law. Democrats offer an aggressive reform package to reverse Republican excesses and restore the public trust." - www.democrats.org (under Agenda -- Honest Government)

Keep trying...those coherent thoughts might just come one day...or not.

1 and 3 would

already be done deals, but for the obstruction of the Republicans in the Senate. Pelosi passed EVERYTHING she said they would in the House.

I make no excuses for Dean.

I'll give you a chance to edit...

...that last post if you want to remove the "EVERYTHING." I'll just mention earmark reform for one. I don't have the time to research every broken promise the Dems made when they took over Congress. However, in the interest of fairness, I must say that the GOP torked me off when they bailed on the best parts of the "Contract with America" back in '94. Once they get power, all that "reform" talk goes out the window--especially when it endangers their ability to bring home the pork or stay in power.

Temporary Relief

The biggest scam of this whole property tax is how it was only temporary relief. I don't know how many of you are home owners, but the problem was with the County not with the state. So when the state got involved all they did was give us a slight reprieve in taxes. I only got a reprieve for a year from taxes. The next year I was paying more than I had before the drop. Yes, the taxes would have gone up anyway, taxes go up every year. So instead of fixing why taxes are uncontrollable, our government decides to add a 1% sales tax. Which in a lot of ways is progressive and hurts the lowest income bracket. Then it took them two years to pass a higher grocery credit.
I saw it play out from the start. Risch was not meant to be governor. He only wanted to make a name for himself and create a "legacy" as he looked to the position he really wanted.
I don't care what side of the isle you sleep on each night, you can't say you lowered taxes when you raised another. And not only that, but then the sales tax increase wasn't enough, so they had to borrow from the state fund....

It wasn't a tax cut, it was a tax SHIFT

All it did was SHIFT taxes from the more affluent to the poor. But consider that the property owners didn't get any break for long either since property was revalued UP shortly after Rich's tax SHIFT.

I agree it was a Tax Shift, but you got it backwards Wizard

Raising the sales tax and cutting the property tax shifts money from the poor to the more affluent. That observation aside, this was an extremely poor way of providing property tax relief to homeowners. This was bad legislation and a bad idea from the start. His actions resulted in all Idaho residents paying 16% more on all purchases including food through the sales tax while only those Idaho residents who owned property got some relief on taxes. All those out-of-state property owners who own Idaho real estate and big corporate landowners were the real beneficiaries of this boondoggle. If you want to provide relief to Idaho homeowners increase the HO exemption, you don't cut taxes on all other catergories of real estate unless you are trying to cater to the big corporate interests. Nice job Risch- you screwed Idaho once again. Larocco has lot a problems granted, but Risch is a snake.

This guy needs to go.

Nothing I can add here that isn't real apparent even if you don't follow politics. What I can say though, if he wins the primary, he'll win it all. He needs to be voted out just like Sali was voted in.

Risch hiked my tax load in the special session!

From my point of view as one who pays rent for shelter what Risch "accomplished" in the special session was neither a tax cut nor a tax shift. It was a tax hike.

Dems don't lie...suuuuurrre....

{I promise I did not inhale}

{I did not have sexual relations with Monica Lewinski}

Neither of these were lies....I am sure of it.

No one EVER said

Dems don't lie, but I would suggest that lies about BJ's and Doobies are minor (and utterly unrelated to YOUR tax burden, I might add), compared to lies that take us to war, well, you do the math...

That's right Syncster

These are comparable, aren't they? The fact that Clinton has been out of office for 8 years, or the fact that these lies did not directly effect the voters, or the fact that evidence directly contradicts the claims, well- don't let those factorss get in the way of your absurd thinking processes........

Do you libs ever tire of

Do you libs ever tire of slapping each other on the back and agreeing with yourselves. I read these posts often and you all say the same thing. I thought you guys liked tax raises. I am not a Risch supporter, but you all never have anything positive to say about Republicans. Do you folks really believe that all Republicans are evil? If so I feel sorry for you. You live in a state full of Republicans, and we have low crime, lower unemployment, low utilities (compared to the rest of the west), etc... If you takes an honest look at states and cities controlled by Dems they are a mess, ie Washington D.C., Detroit, New Orleans, etc...

And this is my favorite part, when the name calling comes.

You have it all wrong IED

hell, I WAS a Republican until 1996, when the party ran the corpse of Bob Dole against Clinton, and I took a good look at Newt and the other hypocrites and realized that party of Goldwater was gone. I voted for Clinton in his second run because I looked OBJECTIVELY at the issues that effected me and found that the Democrats had done better for me, done better for America. I am sorry to say that the Republican party has degenerated EVEN farther since 1996, I could have voted for the 2000 McCain, I don't know this guy running as him today. Democrats may be Tax and Spend, but the Bush Admin spends FAR more (you can google it) and borrows to make tax cuts for the highest brackets and corporate welfare. I might have a positive word for a Republican, but none have deserved one for the last decade and a half.

got it from above...thanks

On topic, I don't disagree with most of what you said but look at your choices from either party anymore. I don't really remember the last time I voted FOR anyone (mostly against) and I always vote. In this particular primary race every dem and independant out there needs to jump ship and vote against Risch. The R is gonna win the general (LL couldn't even beat BS the last general) and I would rather a Repub without Risch than with. Dems can help get rid of Sali that way also.

You've got it right

Now I know some folks would call me a Liberal. And in many ways I am certainly liberal in my views. I'm also fairly conservative in others.

Notice I didn't affiliate my self with a political party? The worst thing a citizen can do is vote for someone because of their party affiliation. You should never vote based only on what side of the isle a person sits on. You should vote for the person based on how well they line up with your personal stance on the issues.

No politician will ever line up with me exactly. At least they won't admit to it. I suspect that few politicians will ever fall lock step in line with many of their constituents. You are free to be who you are, you are free to hold your own political ideologies even if they do fly in the face of one party or another. And you are free to vote for whomever you want, regardless of what party they affiliate themselves with.

What irks me is that so many politicians forget that they represent EVERYONE, not just the folks that voted for them. I may vote against someone, but the person elected represents me regardless of how I cast my ballot. As I see it, much of the Republican Party has forgotten that and only represents the people that voted for them. Risch is one of those people. Certainly the other side of the isle has the same problem so still, vote for the candidate, NOT the party. Wake them up.

Look at the history of this country, the WORST thing that can happen is that one party gets all of the power. If you can't split the power between the two major ideologies we end up with Trillion dollar wars that nobody wants or way out of whack tax schemes. Make the two sides work together and compromise and you end up with something that better represents what this country is about.

That being said MrSkippy

We've got a closed primary here. If the Rs stay together on their side and the Ds on theirs, Risch wins. D's need to cross in the primary, get rid of Risch and then vote your heart in the general. You can there.

Very true

Beating Risch out early is the ticket. Sadly, if he makes it past the primary he's pretty much a safe bet to go to DC.

ied here is a taste of reality

Honestly now...

The states controlled by democrats are such a mess that they sent the federal government more tax money then they receive.

Like California that sent some 50 billion more then they received in federal programs, along with Washington and Oregon.

Of the 10 states that send the federal government more money then they receive only 3 are red states.

Of the top 10 states that got more money then they receives (welfare states) only 2 were Red (if you count DC and New Mexico who flipped in 2004)
see bigpicture.typepad.com/writing/2004/11_states_feed.htmt

(Idaho by the way is a welfare state)

The reality is:

Republican states can't make it with reaching in the pockets of hard working Democrats..

Parto

Interesting that you look

Interesting that you look only at taxes to decide who is better. Something you should really consider is that many western states don't own their own land. If we sold off all the national forests, we would have more taxable land. I am not advocating that by the way. But it is a huge part, especially since it is the libs and lawyers that keep us from logging them.
Myself, I look at quality of life, not how much I can give OR get from government.

Quality of life

First off, if we sold off the national forest the property taxes would go to the state not the federal government.

And if ranchers had to buy the land they were leasing it would put most of them out of business so we would get less money not more from ranchers.

An logging (I hope you have been down the middle fork, and other wilderness areas in Idaho)most of the wilderness areas in the state have little economical value, yes there are trees back there but it will be hell getting them out.(to hot for choppers to steep for roads)

So when you off set the loss of income from ranching and tourism to the gain from logging in the end there is no bonanza in selling off park land. (that's not to say it wouldn't be a good thing for folks living in Cascade)

More important when one com pairs the liberal states at our boarders to Idaho (states that also have large portions of land tied up by the federal government) you will find that they also send the federal government more money then they receive or just look inside of the state of Idaho. At counties like Blaine another giver .

Of course you know that and that is the reason you compared Idaho to cities 3000 mile away and not the states of oregon and Washington..

As to you looking for quality of life, some of your quality comes from the money we get from liberal States when they send us there hard earned tax dollars.

Parto

Your analysis lacks

There are many other factors to explain those observations besides party affiliation

IED...

I have made positive statements about R's when they deserve it. I have even voted for an R here in Idaho. No, they are not all evil. However, the R party in Idaho is unlike any I have seen in other states. Ok to your points of what the R's do for us - Low Crime? My god man, do you read the paper or watch the news. This is about the "sickest" crime state I have ever lived in. I fear more for my life here then when I lived in Boston!!! Lower unemployment? What a joke. The going wage to work at a fast food place in Boise is about $6 per hour. In Helena, Montana you can start at McDonald's for $12 an hour (Montana is a Dem state now). The low utilities one may be true as far as electric, but the gas prices make up for it. Montana use to have low utilities until the R's there screwed it up. A few years back when they were in power they sold the dams and Montana Power went private. The price of power is now astronomical. Even the R's having been trying to reverse their screw up. Nope. I will remain independent and vote for the BEST candidate. I don't give a hoot what letter they have after there name. They need to "walk the walk, not just talk the talk." I will not call you a name. No point in that. You are trying to make a point as I am. However, the truth of the matter is where you find a person in office with integrity (like Gov. Marc Roscoe was in Montana) you will find good things happening - no matter the letter after their name.

Taxes

I'd say most of us common folk (the "little people") don't get all excited about whether the taxes we're paying are property tax, or income tax, or sales tax... it's just a question of what the total tax burden is.

Here's how Mr. Risch affected MY household:

Our property taxes went down by maybe $250 for that one year.

Our sales taxes probably went up by $100 or so.

The next year, our property taxes went up by about $300.

So now our total tax burden is about $150 more than it was before Mr. Smoke and Mirrors.

Risch Cut Sales Tax on Groceries

Does he really think increasing the grocery tax is equivalent to cutting the sales tax on groceries?

As an R, I would never vote for Risch.

Here is the ad:
http://www.risch4idaho.com/home.html

Good 'ol boy politician

Lets not forget Risch was voted out of office when our district in SW Boise elected Roger Madsen (a true statesman for the citizens of Idaho). Then Gov. Dirk Kempthorne appointed Sen. Madsen to head of the Dept. of Labor and appointed Risch to take his seat in the Senate. Good 'ol boy politics at its best. Then Risch spent $250,000 of his own money to get elected Lt. Gov. Why would he spend that kind of money for a part time job that only pays $22,500? Bingo, to position himself to run for the U.S. Senate.

Originally his goal was

Originally his goal was Governor but the handwriting was on the wall -- he couldn't beat Otter -- so with Craig's political demise he made a second choice. Wouldn't trust Risch -- he's been for business over taxpayers for toooooo many years.

No thanks, Risch!

Don't want your kind of political shell game -- never voted for you and never will. The long record of support for business over taxpayers will be remembered voters.

Who is the real liar?

Risch claims the property tax bill was a tax cut, which on its face is true. Of course, with the offsetting sales tax rate increase, it does amount to a tax shift. Liar? Not so much. Misleading, perhaps.

Does anyone remember why LaRocco was voted out of Congress in 1994, besides the fact that Idaho decided to just vote (R)? Well, here's a little refresher. I am not aware of the full circumstances surrounding this case, since I have not been in Idaho for very long. The Idaho Statesman endorsed LaRocco over Risch for Lt. Gov. in 2006, but made the following statement:

"LaRocco also has flaws. The Statesman did not endorse his unsuccessful run for a third term in Congress in 1994, citing his "falsehoods and failure to accept responsibility for his actions in a sexual discrimination dispute." In October 1994, LaRocco admitted to the Statesman that he had told an assistant to resign or be fired because they had an affair; his company eventually paid the woman at least a $40,000 settlement. As LaRocco looks to resume his political career, we’re troubled by the episode from his past."

Risch may have been misleading with his statement about the property tax, but his statement did not destroy the career and reputation of a co-worker to save his own career and reputation.

WATransplant

Why would you conclude a private out of court settlement with a woman who he had an affair with automatically destroyed her career and destroyed her reputation. I've lived here my whole life and I don't know her identity or what her position was. Actually LaRocco's career and reputation took a hit as it should. But if this is your reason for voting for Risch, it is a poor reason. Hey LaRocco is not the ideal candidate and he has some baggage, but take it from some one who been around here awhile, Risch will not look out for you and me. Risch was voted out by the voters and put back by political appointment. He will be great for big corporations like Idaho Power and Simplot etc. He is a slick hardball playin backroom Republican Idaho power broker that is not at all concerned about the average joe
