Professional Soccer in Boise area

(Posted here because of a lack of a "General Sports" or a "Local Sports" category)

United Soccer Leagues staff are "hinting" at the possibility of a franchise in USL's First Division placed in Boise.

Has anyone heard rumors to this effect? Who's the prospective owner? Where the heck would they play?

Put it this way... I've lived here a while, but my favorite team: Portland Timbers. Same league. Let's just say you need to stand (not sit) in the north end sometime to gasp at the energy displayed. Doesn't hurt to average 7,000 per game, either. Oh, BTW, S**ttle sucks.

Of course, it's a hint, this could be vaporware, the league sometimes shows its not above such tactics, but it's survived 15 years to date.

Soccer is like hockey without Venus and Serena Williams.

And lately in Europe you score more off the field.

I hope we get a Formula type race so more than kids have big rollovers.

Need more soccer!

You can see by the one comment in 5 weeks, not the most popular subject.

I wonder if a USL team could survive here? There are plenty of higher level sports already, BSU football, BSU basketball, Stampede, Burn, Hawks, Steelheads, etc.

Still, the influx of new residents from areas where soccer is more popular, and the explosion of youth leagues might help.

Another point, I am not too pleased with some professional and college sports in this country. College football and basketball are more interesting and fun for me to watch than pro, but it seems the college teams are becoming development leagues for the pros. There is also too much importance placed on the college team, Bronco's for example. It's supposed to be an institution of higher learning, not a football stadium with classrooms around the edges. I used to be, but am definitely not now, a fan of pro football and basketball. Too much hype, too much money, too much importance placed on these sports.

I think it is great to see the MLS teams around, Real Salt Lake, San Jose Earthquakes. Very excited about the new Seattle team next year (what will that do to their USL team?). I would enthusiastically support an USL team in Boise!

Oh, who won the USL championship last year? Go Sounders! The Timbers are gonna fall...

Soccer--one guy yelling GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAL like an idiot

Did you watch the paint dry on the bannister last night? The replay was a SHOCKER!

S**ttle... inflates fan

S**ttle... inflates fan numbers, smells like fish, and probably too much competitive infighting this year (players competing for MLS jobs) to actually win anything.

Portland: Takayusi Suzuki. Remember that name.

I won't even go into a college sports rant. People hold to certain beliefs all over this country (scholarship athletes are amateur, the Olympics were amateur) that they'd drop if they'd think about it, but it is kind of a waste of time to think about it. Oh well.

I could go into European fans watching American football and thinking "5 seconds of running and 40 seconds of huddling"... or "big guys wrestling and rolling around on the carpet with each other." We all have fun with generalizations, no?

Is that a car dealer?

July 6

Portland Timbers of USL

vs

Monarcas Morelia, Mexican First Division

at Meridian Speedway

Here's hoping the Statesman finds more information about this. The Speedway director e-mailed a fan site, and the Timber players have been told that this has been added to the schedule (which, BTW, includes the same matchup in Portland on July 3).

Oh, that fan site: http://footboise.us/

They're gonna play the Mexican Army?

BTW... at this point, they

BTW... at this point, they may as well play the Mexican Army.

I'm told this game is off. The promoter has probably bailed. Not that Meridian Speedway is the best place to watch a game, nor is it smart to throw $30,000 into laying sod for something that hasn't really been planned in advance. It's one thing not to engage the "regular" media in town, but it doesn't seem that this guy even hit the Spanish-language media. 1,500 for Chivas Reserves v a TACOMA all-star team is telling in itself.

Sorry. That sounded likely unfortunately.

Grass in the middle of the Speedway...
