Gingg, Brady discuss linebacker switch

Boise State senior linebackers Kyle Gingg and Tim Brady said Wednesday they were surprised when coaches decided to juggle the linebacker corps last week.

Brady moved from the strong side to the weak side, Gingg moved from the weak side to the middle and freshman Aaron Tevis moved into the strong-side spot. Sophomore middle linebacker Derrell Acrey was the odd man out.

Lots of news came out of Chris Petersen's press conference Monday. We have a rundown posted as a news update at IdahoStatesman.com. We'll also have audio of the press conference posted shortly.

Among the news: Nick Lomax has left the program, Toshi Franklin and Keith McGowen are suspended for the opener, Michael Choate and Tyler Shoemaker are getting scholarships, safety George Iloka likely will play this year and the linebacker situation still could change.

Tevis replaces Acrey in Broncos' lineup

The Boise State football team has shaken up its linebacker corps for the season opener Saturday against Idaho State.

Sophomore middle linebacker Derrell Acrey, who had been penciled in as the starter since the spring, is out of the starting lineup.

Freshman Aaron Tevis (6-foot-3, 214 pounds), a promising, athletic player, is in — listed as the starting strong-side linebacker on the team’s first depth chart, released Sunday.

Freshman corner Jamar Taylor will play

True freshman cornerback Jamar Taylor will play this season, coach Chris Petersen said Thursday.

Taylor (6-foot, 185 pounds) will provide depth in the secondary. Junior Kyle Wilson and sophomore Brandyn Thompson are slated to start at cornerback. Sophomore Keith McGowen and Taylor are the backups. Freshman Cedric Febis is a backup safety/cornerback.

Taylor has had a solid fall camp and received some practice time with the first team in the past week.

Broncos name Moore the starting QB

Four for Moore?

It looks that way — as Boise State coach Chris Petersen announced Wednesday that Moore will start at quarterback in the Broncos’ season opener Aug. 30 at Bronco Stadium against Idaho State.

Moore will be the first freshman quarterback ever to start the season opener for Boise State and the first freshman to start a game since Bart Hendricks in 1997.

Moore, a lefty, is a coach’s son who rewrote the Washington high school record book.

Broncos go 'old school'

On the same day that the Boise State athletic department gave the media a tour of the new Stueckle Sky Club, football coach Chris Petersen went old school with his team meetings.

The Broncos held their team meeting Tuesday morning on the mats in the wrestling room and their special teams meeting in one of the dungeon-like rooms under the east grandstands in Bronco Stadium.

Gallarda grows into blocking role

Boise State tight end Tommy Gallarda came here as a highly touted receiver weighing 209 pounds.

Now the 6-foot-5 sophomore weighs 255 — and he is expected to be a menace as a blocker. He and redshirt freshman Kyle Efaw will provide depth at tight end behind senior Chris O’Neill and junior Richie Brockel.

“When I got here for my first fall camp, I was doing a lot of receiving,” Gallarda said. “I realized to get on the field and play I was going to have to be able to do both.”

No QB decision; Brotzman nails 58-yarder

Saturday’s scrimmage didn’t lead to a quarterback decision from the Boise State football coaches.

Senior Bush Hamdan and freshman Kellen Moore combined for four touchdown passes, two interceptions and five touchdown drives in the final public scrimmage of the season.

The team scrimmages privately Friday at Eagle High.

“We’re talking about it right now,” Petersen said of the quarterback decision, “but it’s still a close battle.”

Offense scores seven TDs, QBs look good

The Boise State offense bounced back Saturday with a terrific performance, scoring seven touchdowns in the Broncos’ final public scrimmage this year.

Senior quarterback Bush Hamdan tossed three touchdown passes while redshirt freshman Kellen Moore, sophomore Mike Coughlin and freshman Drew Hawkins each threw one. Junior Nick Lomax ran for a score.

The offense had been shaky in the first scrimmage and struggled this week in practice.

Boise State to play Tulsa, UC Davis in 2009

Boise State will play 13 football games and seven at home in 2009 — including a game against coach Chris Petersen’s alma mater, UC Davis of the Football Championship Subdivision.

Boise State released a tentative schedule for its five nonconference games Friday.

The slate includes a game at Tulsa, a former WAC school. Tulsa is scheduled to come to Boise in 2011. The schools were both in the WAC from 2001 to 2004. Tulsa has become a contender in Conference USA.
