Album review: Built To Spill, "There Is No Enemy," 3 1/2 out of 4 stars
Submitted by Michael Deeds on Wed, 10/07/2009 - 5:22pm.Quick: Count on one hand the number of bands that have released a seventh studio album that made more impact than a kernel of popcorn hitting the floor. Eventually, fresh creativity gives way to muscle memory. Nevertheless, Boise’s Built To Spill has earned the right to release a late-career record, even if the title might be a sneaky attempt to convince indie purists that 15 years of allegiance to Warner Bros. is A-OK.

Old Boise Guitar Co. owner wins songwriting contest
Submitted by Michael Deeds on Thu, 10/01/2009 - 3:12pm.Congratulations to Johnny "Shoes" Pisano, owner of Old Boise Guitar Co., for winning the Guy Clark Songwriting Contest. Despite the fact he's owned a guitar store for 25 years and played guitar for 40, Pisano had never written a song until last year. Since then, he's become a full-fledged songwriting buff. Here are the winning lyrics:
Pieces Of Me And You
(Written by John S. Pisano)
That's one hell of a moon shining down tonight
Painting the world with a magic light
I've got a feeling you're looking up at it too
Emmylou Harris booked at Egyptian Theatre

How was the Killers concert?

Alice in Chains makes a remarkable return?
Submitted by Michael Deeds on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 3:36pm.Grunge band Alice in Chains came to an abrupt end in 2002 when deteriorating frontman Layne Staley died of a drug overdose. More than a decade later, the group has reformed with an unknown as lead singer.
Normally, this would make me wince. I hate when bands do things like that. But what makes the new Alice in Chains different from say, Journey or Foreigner, is that the band is releasing an album of new material that people actually will buy and enjoy. The group still sounds unmistakably like Alice in Chains, shockingly without seeming to miss Staley.
The single, "Check My Brain," arguably diminishes Staley's legacy by suggesting that, well, perhaps guitarist Jerry Cantrell's songwriting, diving ax grind and haunted-soul vocal harmonies were the crucial elements of the group's sound.
In other words, it's solid. Amazingly so. Very few bands have successfully tried something like this. AC/DC comes to mind. I'm thinking Alice in Chains might pull this comeback off and extend its career indefinitely.

Lita Ford to kiss us deadly
Submitted by Michael Deeds on Tue, 09/22/2009 - 4:51pm.I was recently informed by Knitting Factory's booker that '80s pop-metal pin-up Lita Ford will perform with Queensryche at the group's Nov. 6 concert. Not open for them. Play with them. Ford, 50, is planning a solo CD soon. Judging from the unfortunate new song "Piece (Hell Yeah)," which you can hear here, it ain't no big thing. But she knows what she likes. (Herself.)
