Life without an iPod

UPDATE: I bought the 160GB. I dig it.

--

My 80GB iPod just died. This is bad. Especially for a person in my line of work.

What do I buy to replace it?

A 160GB iPod, which now costs $100 less than the 80GB did AND would hold my entire digital music collection? (Albeit barely. Not to mention that the moving parts of a hard drive do not excite me.)

An iTouch? (Flash memory. Gizmos. Wi-fi. I'd definitely have to go with the 64GB.)

Do I wait and see what the Motorola "Droid Does" is all about? (My phone plan with AT&T expires next month. I'm probably switching to Verizon.)

Google Wave: Savior of the universe?

Yes, I had a bit of fun with Twitter in the Idaho Statesman last Friday (apparently sending some of the local Twitterati into a twizzy. Sheesh, peeps, I even pre-apologized!) But that doesn't mean I'm anti-social networking. I've been following the development of Google Wave mostly because of its outrageous, er, impossible, um, intriguing claims. (If someone sends me an invite, I PROMISE to sign up.) However, this early review from the San Jose Mercury-News is not promising.

"You open an e-mail. You start reading, and then the person who sent it opens the e-mail and starts typing more stuff into the e-mail while you're reading it. And then you start typing back in that e-mail. You add a picture, or a video, or a map. Then the sender starts editing what you wrote. And then you invite 12 more people to edit the e-mail. And then you realize you've got 10 other waves you're trying to keep up with.

It's at this point that your head explodes. Welcome to Google Wave."

Def Leppard show canceled

Def Leppard's concert Oct. 24 at the Idaho Center won't be happening. The whole tour has been nixed. Boooooooooo!

-UPDATE-

Def Leppard's reason: "unforeseen personal matters."

Here's more from the press release:

"We know how truly blessed we are to have such committed fans,” said the band in a statement. “That’s why we’ve agonized over this decision. Even if just a single concert, we don’t take cancelling shows lightly, but unfortunately life’s commitments need to be the priority.”

Catching up with radio ...

— As you may have read in my Scene column last week, pop station Magic 93.1 has changed its name — to 93.1 Hit Music Now. Why, you ask? Good question. Program director Scott Souhrada did not return my voice mail or follow-up call to Citadel’s friendly receptionist. A press release from the marketing department eventually trickled in, but it didn’t provide much insight. All I know is the station sounds about the same to me, which doesn’t bode well for future battles with 103.3 Kiss FM. Kiss has spanked Magic in the ratings war lately.

— Radio Boise — aka Boise Community Radio — remains determined to get on the air. The non-profit recently received a federal grant for $227,000. That’s terrific news, but there’s a catch. It’s matching funds. Radio Boise needs to raise $75,000 during the grant’s 18-month cycle to get its hands on the 3-for-1 match. Says Radio Boise’s Jeff Abrams: “The grant will form the centerpiece of a campaign designed to raise sufficient funds to allow us to begin a local, noncommercial radio broadcast on 89.9 FM this spring.”

New Michael Jackson song: This is it?

We all knew it would probably be a letdown. Still, this is exceptionally weak.

TiVo alert: Boise on national TV this week

Get out that remote control and start programming the TiVo: Boise makes a couple of notable appearances on the boob tube this week ...

— Three local restaurants — Flying Pie Pizzeria, Big Juds and Rockies Diner will be featured on "Man v. Food." The Boise episode premieres the night of Wednesday, Oct. 14, on the Travel Channel.

As a side note, Flying Pie owner Howard Olivier tells me that the Travel Channel folks liked Flying Pie's pizza so much that they ordered some frozen pies to be delivered via FedEx after they'd flown home.

— Rock band Built To Spill is slated to perform Thursday, Oct. 15 (edit: thanks, Buffaloed!), on "Late Show with David Letterman" on CBS.
