Win tickets to see "The Shining"

Red rum ... red rum. Remember Stanley Kubrick's classic and creepy horror movie "The Shining" with Jack Nicholson? We're giving away tickets to the film's screening Wednesday at the Flashback Film Festival.

To win a pair of tickets to the April 9 showing, e-mail cdryden@idahostatesman.com with your phone number and the answer to the following question:

McConaughey P.I.?

Party at the moon tower! Matthew McConaughey has reportedly been offered the role of Magnum P.I. for the movie version of the classic TV show.

Should you take the gamble on "Leatherheads"?

Aside from the extremely cool Rolling Stones movie "Shine a Light," which comes to Edwards 21 Imax this weekend, George Clooney's new comedy about 1920s football players called "Leatherheads" is highest on the list of viewable new releases this weekend. But is it worth your eight bucks?

Absolutely, and here's why: Clooney hasn't made a bad period film in his career. "The Good German," "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" are all great films.

It's thumbs up for Roger Ebert

I'm not a huge fan of Roger Ebert's movie reviews, but you had to feel bad for the guy when he lost his voice after a third surgery for throat cancer in January.

Looks like the old critic is getting back to reviewing movies, although he obviously won't be able to get back to his syndicated TV show "Ebert & Roeper" since he still can't speak.

Rolling Stones in IMAX opens in Boise April 4

Edwards 21 confirmed they've got tickets on sale now for Martin Scorsese's "Shine a Light," a career-spanning documentary about the Rolling Stones that will open in IMAX on April 4.

Friday giveaway

Show us what you know about classic movies and we've got tickets for you to see "Casablanca" Wednesday at the Flashback Film Festival at Edwards 9. To win a pair of tickets to the April 2 showing, e-mail cdryden@idahostatesman.com with your phone number and the answer to the following question:

"Play it again, Sam," one of the famous lines associated with "Casablanca,"
A. Is a misquote that never actually is said in the film.
B. Is the last line of dialogue in the film.
C. Was ad-libbed during filming.
D. Was added to the script at Humphrey Bogart's suggestion.

"Run Fatboy Run" - Don't say I didn't tell you so

So you're a fan of Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz") who can't wait to see "Run Fatboy Run," which comes out Friday.

Don't buy that ticket just yet unless you're prepared for a possible letdown. Of course, any movie could let you down, but consider these facts about "Fatboy."

Win tickets to see "Batman"

Once again this week we're giving away tickets to the Flashback Film Festival for Wednesday's screening of "Batman."

To win a pair of tickets to the March 26 showing of "Batman," e-mail cdryden@idahostatesman.com with your phone number and the answer to the following question:

When good actors do bad ... very bad

Entertainment Weekly has a great feature on "bank roles" - movie performances in which well-regarded actors "did it for the money."

Next time you get to thinking, "Wow, Robert DeNiro was so great in Taxi Driver..." think back to 2000's "The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle." There's just something gratifying about realizing that the best actors are just people, too, and capable of making huge mistakes.
