The Boise State football team’s defense swarmed BYU ball carriers throughout the Sept. 20 victory, when the Broncos held the Cougars to 200 yards.
The effort hasn’t been quite the same the past two weeks, when missed tackles contributed to New Mexico generating 374 yards and Southern Miss accumulating 424.
One of the best way to avoid missed tackles: gang tackling.

The final installment of a 12-year series between the Boise State and Fresno State football teams could be one of the best.
The Broncos (4-1) and Bulldogs (4-2) are two of the top three candidates to win the Mountain West — Nevada (5-1) is the other — and they’re the top two teams in the country in turnovers forced.
“This is one of those games that’s going to be a slugfest,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said Monday. “You’re not going to get a bunch of easy plays on these guys.”

The Boise State football team is back in The Associated Press Top 25.
The Broncos, who have been flirting with the last few spots of the poll for weeks but unable to stick there, were No. 24 on Sunday — one spot behind Louisiana Tech of the WAC and two spots ahead of Ohio of the MAC, who are Boise State’s top competitors in the BCS-buster race.
Michigan State is not ranked.

In each of the past two games, Boise State junior Spencer Gerke has played left guard and right guard on consecutive snaps. He’s also the backup center.
“You don’t really think about it,” Gerke said. “I don’t really think about it in a game. After a game, in practices, you start to think about it more. It doesn’t get confusing, but everything is backwards.”

Boise State sophomore Matt Miller has brought a fullback’s tenacity to the wide receiver position and established himself as one of the top leaders on the team.
Miller leads the team with 25 catches for 268 yards and a touchdown. Many of his catches have been on medium-length throws and he has fought one or two defenders for an extra couple yards, sometimes to get the first down.

Boise State quarterbacks coach Jonathan Smith said Tuesday he sees junior quarterback Joe Southwick becoming “more confident and comfortable” four games into his career as a starter.
Still, he sees plenty of room for improvement.
It was the first time that Smith was made available to the media since spring ball.

Boise State junior tight end Gabe Linehan will be out for a while with a hamstring injury, coach Chris Petersen said Monday (audio here).
Linehan had been limited in the first four games. He didn’t play in the second half against New Mexico.
“I don’t know if it will be a month or longer,” Petersen said. “It’s more technical than just hamstring issues.”
