Boise State football coach Chris Petersen said Monday that the matchup against Washington defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox won’t be on his mind as the Broncos play the Huskies in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.
Wilcox was Petersen’s defensive coordinator from 2006 to 2009. That was Wilcox’s first job as a coordinator.
“I’ve played a lot of people I’ve been close to,” Petersen said. “You just play the game. … Really, you don’t think about it much, even up to the game.”

The Boise State football team will play Washington in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas on Dec. 22 — a preview of the 2013 season opener in Seattle.
The AP No. 20 Broncos (10-2, 7-1 Mountain West) and Huskies (7-5, 5-4 Pac-12) haven’t met since 2007, when the Broncos lost at Husky Stadium.
The game begins at 1:30 p.m. MST and airs on ESPN.
This will be the Broncos’ third straight trip to the MAACO Bowl. They beat Utah and Arizona State the past two seasons.

The Boise State football team has played four bowl-bound teams this season. The offense has produced 45 points in those games — 11.25 per game — with a high of 20 against Fresno State.
Nevada, which is headed to the New Mexico Bowl, is the fifth bowl-bound foe on Saturday in Reno.
The Broncos have shown some high-scoring potential in the last month, but they have yet to do it against a good team.

Boise State senior tailback D.J. Harper hopes to combine a personal milestone with some program history Saturday afternoon in Reno.
Harper needs 65 rushing yards to reach the 1,000-yard mark. It would be the fourth straight season that a Bronco accomplished that feat but a first for Harper.
“It’s kind of in the back of my mind,” Harper said. “I want to put the team first. … Hopefully we come out with the W, win the Mountain West and I can accomplish my own personal goal as well.”

Reno Mayor Bob Cashell and then-Nevada President Milton Glick co-wrote a letter to Boise State football fans two years ago apologizing for the Wolf Pack fans’ behavior during and after their upset win over Boise State at Mackay Stadium.
On Saturday, the Broncos and their fans return to Mackay for the first time since that game. We caught up with Cashell for a Q&A for this week’s Bronco Blitz section.

Two years into his pro career, former Boise State wide receiver Titus Young finds himself in nearly the same situation as his sophomore year of college.
Young was sent home from the Detroit Lions’ facility for insubordinate behavior last week, according to the Detroit Free Press. He did not play in the game against the Houston Texans.
Young purposely lined up in the wrong spot multiple times in a game against Green Bay, the Free Press reported.
Young has not returned to practice.

Boise State linebackers coach Bob Gregory on Tuesday compared the showdown between Boise State’s highly ranked defense and Nevada’s overpowering offense to a boxing match.
“I told our guys it’s like a heavyweight fight — it’s the old days, it’s 15 rounds,” Gregory said. “They don’t know who Muhammad Ali is, but that’s what it is.”

Boise State senior wide receiver Mitch Burroughs will play Saturday at Nevada, coach Chris Petersen said Monday.
Burroughs missed five games with an injured wrist before making a token, one-play appearance on senior day. He lined up at wide receiver and didn’t touch a defender on a run play.
Burroughs is a two-year starter. He has 12 catches for 124 yards this season.

UPDATE:
The Boise State football team got bad news from the Bowl Championship Series standings Sunday night (full standings here).
The Broncos gained just two spots, to No. 20, despite losses by the seven teams ranked immediately ahead of them. That makes it highly unlikely the Broncos can get to No. 16 and earn an automatic berth.
