Boise State tailback Matt Kaiserman, a Skyview High graduate, says he might be more nervous for his Bronco Stadium debut Saturday against San Jose State than he was for his college debut last week at Hawaii.

Kaiserman rushed 23 times for 122 yards and a touchdown in Hawaii. He had missed the first six games because of a concussion.

“I’m glad for the opportunity,” he said of Saturday’s game. “I can’t wait.”

Boise State will not agree to move next year's game against Virginia Tech, athletic department spokesman Max Corbet said Wednesday.

The game is scheduled for Oct. 2, 2010, at FedExField in Landover, Md.

Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver said on a radio show this week that the game would move to Labor Day. Boise State already had indicated it didn't want to play on a different date, Corbet said.

Playing the game on Labor Day would have given the Broncos a difficult turnaround for their next game.

Boise State sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore's Heisman Trophy campaign is gaining steam.

Moore moved up to fifth on ESPN.com's Heisman Watch on Tuesday. He was sixth last week.

Moore got a first-place vote this week and was listed on six of the 15 ballots.

He leads the nation in pass efficiency and touchdown passes. He has thrown 21 touchdown passes and just two interceptions, the second-best touchdown-to-interception ratio in the nation.

Monday was a day for accolades for the Boise State football program.

Sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore was named one of 15 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

Coach Chris Petersen was named to the watch list for the Bear Bryant coach of the year award that he won in 2006. The list of 20 coaches includes Idaho coach Robb Akey.

TCU jumped ahead of Boise State on Sunday in the Bowl Championship Series standings — delivering a blow to the Broncos’ BCS hopes.

TCU is No. 6 and Boise State is No. 7.

Last week, Boise State was No. 4 and TCU was No. 8.

The top 10 goes Florida, Alabama, Texas, Iowa, USC, TCU, Boise State, Cincinnati, LSU and Oregon.

Two Boise State backups didn’t make the trip to Hawaii for the Broncos’ game tonight against the Warriors.

Backup center Bronson Durrant (illness) and tailback Jarvis Hodge (death in family) didn’t travel.

The rest of the Broncos’ lineup is expected to be the same as expected.

Durrant's absence leaves right tackle Garrett Pendergast as the backup center.

I have a feature on defensive end Shea McClellin in today’s newspaper.

The flip side of that story is the difficult year sophomore end Jarrell Root is having. McClellin replaced Root in the starting lineup after three games.

Root still plays as part of the end rotation but he has just two assisted tackles, both for loss.

Hawaii sophomore Bryant Moniz might be the least likely starting quarterback in the country.

Moniz was out of football last year, attending community college classes in Hawaii after spending one semester as a quarterback at Fresno City College.

He walked on at Hawaii in January and was No. 7 on the depth chart. He was the third-stringer early in the season but backup Brent Rausch injured his throwing hand and starter Greg Alexander was lost with a season-ending knee injury.

Petersen: 'We just have more to us'

All those flaws poll voters have seen from the Boise State football team the past two games — and used to justify putting teams like Cincinnati and USC ahead of them — haven’t gone unnoticed by coach Chris Petersen.

Petersen has challenged his team to take the next step in its growth — cleaning up those mistakes in order to play to its potential.

Boise State sophomore safety George Iloka said injuries have prevented him from having the impact he expects from himself in the past three games.

He’s feeling better this week and expects that to change. He has battled turf toe, a foot injury and an ankle injury.

“When I’m hurt, I don’t know how to fight through it,” Iloka said. “This is my first time being hurt. It’s hard for me to be hurt and play how I usually play.”
