There were plenty of reasons to believe that a fresh format was coming. The 24/7 Christmas music stopped at midnight as expected.
But Variety Rock 105.1 FM didn't flip to a fresh format at the strike of 12. Instead, Journey's "Wheel in the Sky" started playing early this morning.
The station reverted to the same ol’ rock ‘n’ roll formula, making radio know-it-alls look a tad foolish.
Will more Variety Rock make Boise listeners happy? Sad? A bit bewildered?
And did the station ever really intend to flip?
Update: Marie McGlynn, vice president and general manager at Journal Broadcast Group of Boise, would not say specifically whether a format change had been in the works for Variety Rock 105.1.
"We're always looking for opportunities that would develop our stations," she said.
Whatever the case, Variety Rock is back for now: "There is no plan to flip," she said.
In fact, there's a chance Variety Rock could be around during holiday season in 2013 — and switch temporarily to Christmas music again.
"We saw it as a financial opportunity," she explained, "as well as an interesting option when there wasn't a lot of Christmas music competition in the marketplace."
