Bogus is open, and skiers and boarders are hitting the slopes

Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area opened Friday with a modest turnout, but in time for the critical holiday period.
The ski area reported snow depths between 14 and 17 inches on the mountain. Heavy winds scoured the area before the opener, which meant the snow was unevenly distributed, and there were brown spots in several places on opening day.
The opener attracted about 1,700 people up to the mountain, according to Alan Moore, Bogus’ CEO, which is fewer visitors than previous opening days when there was more snow.
“Skiers and boarders in this valley are pretty sophisticated about snow conditions, and the turnout reflects that,” Moore said Friday. “But overall, it’s been a pretty good day.”
He recommended people ski the backside of the mountain off the Pine Creek chairlift (Chair 6), which has the most snow.
