Boise State recruit and Fruitland High senior Joe Martarano was named the 2012-13 Gatorade Idaho Football Player of the Year on Thursday.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker and quarterback amassed 147 tackles and intercepted four passes this season, leading the Grizzlies to their seventh consecutive appearance in the 3A state championship game. Martarano completed 67-of-106 passes for 1,240 yards and 13 touchdowns, while adding 551 rushing yards and another 10 touchdowns.
"Defensively, he's tall, thick, strong and fast," said Payette coach Troy Gleave in a press release. "He's just a beast in the middle. It's very hard to block him or run away from him. Offensively, he has a monster arm and he never goes down on first contact."
Martarano also is considered a top prospect at third base for the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. He has played on state title teams in football, baseball and basketball during his time at Fruitland.
