Idaho Statesman bowl projections: Boise State-UCLA in Las Vegas, Utah State-Toledo in Boise

Here are my bowl projections for this week:

New Mexico (MW vs. Pac-12), Dec. 15, Albuquerque: Nevada vs. Arizona: Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson told the Fresno Bee last week that New Mexico didn’t make sense for Fresno State (repeat visitor), so I put Nevada here.

Famous Idaho Potato (WAC vs. MAC), Dec. 15, Boise: Utah State vs. Toledo: The Potato Bowl should be a good game again this year. Utah State is having an outstanding season and still could win the WAC and the MAC has enough good teams to send someone with a gaudy record to Boise.

Poinsettia (MW vs. BYU), Dec. 20, San Diego: San Diego State vs. BYU: This is the biggest no-brainer on the list.

MAACO (MW vs. Pac-12), Dec. 22, Las Vegas: Boise State vs. UCLA: If the Broncos win out, they’re still by far the most attractive team because of their name, TV value and likely Top 25 ranking. And unlike Fresno/New Mexico above, the Mountain West doesn’t have any control to prevent a team from going to Las Vegas three years in a row. The opponent will be better if the Pac-12 only gets one team into the BCS — the USC-UCLA loser seems likely — than if the Pac-12 gets two.

Hawaii (MW vs. C-USA), Dec. 24, Honolulu: Fresno State vs. Houston: This would be a nice reward for the Bulldogs if they share the conference title.

Armed Forces (MW vs. C-USA), Dec. 29, Fort Worth, Texas: Air Force vs. East Carolina: Air Force’s attractiveness took a hit with last week’s loss to Army. The Falcons still have to play Fresno State and San Diego State, too.

Rose (Pac-12 vs. Big Ten), Jan. 1, Pasadena, Calif.: Oklahoma vs. Nebraska: The Pac-12 might sneak a second team into the top 14, but Oregon State probably has to beat Stanford. The Rose could take Notre Dame but if the Irish are undefeated there will be pressure to let them go to the Fiesta.

Orange (ACC vs. BCS), Jan. 1, Miami: Florida State vs. Louisville: A chance for Louisville to build some serious poll momentum going into next year.

Sugar (SEC vs. BCS), Jan. 2, New Orleans: Florida vs. Clemson: Clemson is rooting hard against the Pac-12 getting a second bid. That could determine whether the Tigers get a spot.

Fiesta (Big 12 vs. BCS), Jan. 3, Glendale, Ariz.: Kansas State vs. Notre Dame: This could be a matchup of undefeated teams ranked No. 3 and No. 4.

BCS National Championship Game (1 vs. 2), Jan. 7, Miami: Alabama vs. Oregon: If Oregon and Kansas State are undefeated, it will be close. But it’s difficult to imagine Oregon getting left out with its dominance and track record.

•••

I’m writing about sophomore safety Jeremy Ioane’s homecoming for Saturday’s paper. The Honolulu native gets to play in front of family and friends against Hawaii.

“We’re really pleased with how he’s playing,” coach Chris Petersen said. “I still think his best football is in front of him. He’s a smart player. You’re starting to see signs of him being a physical player. I think both those things will continue to increase in his favor.”

•••

Hawaii quarterback Sean Schroeder on why Boise State’s defense is so good against the pass:

“Their D-line gets a lot of pressure on the quarterback. It’s hard to be efficient as a quarterback when you’re lying on your back.”

•••

Boise State linebacker J.C. Percy on the special teams matchup this week:

“Any time we go against a team that has a good special teams unit, it’s going to be a good test, and we’re looking forward to it. Especially after our outing last week, this one’s going to be extra special.”

ugly, you are not making any sense....

"Boise State in MWC with 2-3 good OOC games would have just as much revenue and chance as in the Big East...."

Do you not understand difference in "conference" money from the MWC to the Big East. Boise State has NO chance of making up that difference with "2-3 good OOC games". In all seriousness, you can't be this dense.

"The MWC is weak this year, but it won't always be weak...."

Really?! Great, Boise State should stick around because New Mexico will someday be a great football team.....

"Look at the WAC....Imagine if Boise State and BYU were still in the WAC along with Utah State and LA Tech...."

What WAC? Has any of this sunk in with you?

ugly, come on, you have to have a better clue than this......

ugly #2

"1....Im not comparing tv revenue of mwc to big east....to me, Boise should have tried other conferences as did Utah and TCU....the old adage of 'its not what you make that counts, but it is what you keep'....so what if the tv revenue is $5M? What will it cost? Do you realize that the visitor fees of the Big East will also be much higher than the mwc? Do Business accounting....Id rather gross $190,000 and keep $85,000 than to gross $1M and then lose $100,000....you see, simple economics...."

------

1.) You do realize that schools are invited by the conferences to join, right? BSU was invited by the Big East and no one else.

2.) What are "visitor" fees exactly? Do you mean travel? If so, Murph did a nice article not to long ago about travel costs and the Big East. It broke down to less than $200K in additional travel costs each year. So using "Business accounting" as you put it, $5M in additional revenue, $200K in additional expenses, leaves $4.8M BSU gets to keep, pretty simple. don't you think?

BS

I think the Big East is a big basketball draw for TV and I still don't understand why there wasn't enough $ for BSU and SDSU to become full members of the Big East.

SIF

Travel is the main reason. Not BSU's or SDSU's travel, but the rest of the league coming west.

BS

Must be about my perspective and interest. Personally, I'm much more jazzed about Bball than I am about Fball. So, from my perspective I'm much more interested in CBB than CFB...I'm already filling out my brackets for March Madness. Therefore, from my perspective I pay extra cash and spend more time watching Bball games than I do Fball games.

While I'm in agreement with Ugs and VNDL that we have to be Bronco Boosters to bring a national championship football trophy to Idaho I'm still much more interested in seeing a university within Idaho bring a March Maddness Trophy to the great State of Idaho.

Sif....March Madness? You must still remember

Kenny Owens of TVCC and the Baptist Kid from Mountain Home (Brian)?

Yes, now that was something to brag about....5-0....

Ugs

Oh yes I still remember those days and I worked in the sports information department during the years of Otis Livingston and Riley Smith...very enjoyable moments to being a Vandal! There are more of those moments in our future.

ugly #3

"2....yes. The Big East will now be in a new system of ratings and the rankings of the top 4 teams....no more non aq thus better have a very good ooc schedule if you are to compete with the Big 4 conferences, plus the ACC....Boise State will never be another BCS #5 with a schedule of past....so win the blue, then win the conference, and hope you have a SOS and 12-0 to compete with the Big 4....Mark my Words, the Big East will never have an NC without having an OOC that has at least one game with SEC and one with Big 10 or Big 12...."

--------------------------

So first you say that BSU has a better chance of making a NC with the MWC than the Big East conference, but then you state "Boise State will never be another BCS #5 with a schedule of past". You do realize that the MWC is full of past teams, right?

I'm really not sure how you get to the conclusion that the MWC will somehow be an easier path to a NC than the Big East. You seem to agree that BSU needs a better SOS than it has in the past, but your solution seems to be to continue to play teams from the past. Makes no sense.

ugly #4

"3....it will. The Big East Commissionar wants a 7th BCS Big Bowl game....why? it is because even he can see the future of the new system....The Big East will have to compete with at least 3 other divisions, other than the main 4 +ACC, to get to one of the top 6 BCS Bowls....much harder than as a non-AQ...."

-------------------

Again, this make little sense. AQ status is going away period, for everyone. But you are saying the MWC is going to still be "non-AQ" and they will have an easier way to BCS bowls. I have not seen any rule that somehow says the MWC does not to do exactly what the Big East does to qualify for a BCS bowl. Do you have a link to this?

BSU4342....Not what I said....basically it is like this....

In 2014, no AQ systems....

thus, the MWC and the Big East will be treated the same....

so why go to the Big East if the MWC has the same opportunity?

You are kidding right? ugly?

"so why go to the Big East if the MWC has the same opportunity?"

How about millions more in revenue?

How about a higher quality home opponents?

How about better paying bowl tie-ins?

How about better TV exposure?

How about playing in the recruiting hot beds of Texas and Florida?

How about playing in front of 50,000 people at Louisville or Rutgers instead of 20,000 people in Reno or Las Vegas?

BSU4342....Boise State can play 70,000 + if in mwc and

schedule Nebraska and others....

they will see 65,000 or so at Washington and BYU....

they wont at UT Martin or southern miss....

so do you have to go another 2,000 miles ????

You are being silly again ugly

We are talking about conferences here ugly, stay on point.

And FYI, we don't, nor have we played at UT Martin. And we do not have So. Miss* on our schedule after this season.

* But So. Miss is out drawing New Mexico, Colorado St., Nevada, Wyoming, Utah St., UNLV, and San Jose St. (all MWC teams) this year, AND they are 0-9!

How about we DON'T and get back into our big heads again.

often, in papers there is the 'fee' stuff that has access to all the paper and others and is more appropriate for those that want it....that is fine.

and they always have the free areas, and that is usually where the advertisements are that really pay for the stuff....

Almost all papers are doing this from 'The Wall Street Journal' to 'Sports Illustrated'....but you can still view the pages and blog, just not as much as the 'fee' subscribers....

wait and see and hang in there....

iffy - you gonna go too?

According to razor, the Statesman is gonna start charging a subscription fee to use statesman's blogs in about 4 days.

I have not seen it written anywhere and it could even be a joke by razor, I dunno.

I live in Magic Valley and the Times News started charging a monthly subscription fee to view the Times News on-line, a couple of months ago.

I think many news sources are going that route to bolster lagging revenues.

Maybe somebody on these boards has a Statesman Cite to that effect they could provide.

Oh, gosh. And to think I was going to lose you two, only to have to pay to sit in a room with ugly talking to himself. Do you think he makes the mother-in-law pay for one of his personalities, or just the medication?

For the record..

The current MWC bowls are:

MAACO - #1 v PAC#5 - $1,100,000 per team
Pointsettia - #2 v BYU or WAC - $500,000
Hawaii - #3 or Hawaii v CUSA#2 - $650,00
New Mexico - #4/5 v PAC#7 - $456,250
Armed Forces - #4/5 v CUSA#3 - $600,000

Total payouts - $3,306,250

-------------------

The current Big East Bowls are (without the BCS bowl):

Russel Athletic - #2 v ACC#3 - $2,275,000 per team
Belk - #3 v ACC#5 - $1,700,000
Pinstripe - #4 v Big12#7 - $1,800,000
BBVA - #5 v SEC#8 - $900,000
Beef O'Brady - #6 v CUSA#4 - $537,500

Total Payouts - $7,212,500

Φ ugly is working

on square root right now.

3.3 must, in some manner, be worth more than 7.2.

B12345 - it always seems to

get back to what is best for the financial profit/loss for BSU (or any FBS college football teams, for that matter), doesn't it?

I am very curious how well Bronco Nation is going to travel to away games during the 2013 season. I understand it really won't affect BSU very much revenue wise if Bronco Nation goes to the games or not - as BSU will still get the revenue for playing the games, to begin with. There really is no incentive, financially, for Bronco Nation to travel to away games during the regular season, once BSU starts the Big East, in earnest. Bronco Nation's role will be to fill the seats at Bronco Stadium and buy Bronco Gear and blorange trinkets.

I know BSU travels well to a once-in-a-while post season bowl, but how about on a regular basis every two weeks or so?

If members of Bronco Nation are having a hard time paying a little bit of money to participate in a CFB football blog and joining the BAA and contributing money for the expansion of Bronco Stadium, how are they ever gonna pay to travel to so many away games East of the Mississippi River, on a regular basis?

IT is a great thing for BSU to have the national powerhouse football team that exists today. Without it, BSU would just be a dot on a map of Boise. Now BSU can be confused with Bowling Green State University (BGSU) by many people on a national basis, and they get even more confused when they look at a map of Iowa and can't find Boyzee anywhere.

Without the revenue the Broncos bring in for BSU, BSU would still be giving away 2 year degrees in Spark Plug Gapping Methodology.

VNDL

VNDL....That is an

excellent post....

I hope everyone reads this and understands what you are saying....

It is true !!!!

For the record

In 2011, BSU's total operating revenue was just north of $179M, the football program accounted for about $12M of that (or roughly 6.5%).

B12345 - how much

gross revenue did the Bronco football team produce for BSU? Was it greater than about $12M?

Did it pay for itself as a Net Contributor (Bill Payer) or was it a Net Drainer (Losing Business Proposition) of resources?

Did it cost more for BSU to have the Bronco Football Team than the football team brought into the university?

Apparently BSU believes the Bronco Football Team to be a Profit Center.

Maybe I am mistaken and the Bronco Football Team exists for the students and alumnus to get behind at Homecoming and to serve as a social gathering point as most CFB teams used to do in the old days (school pride and all).

VNDL

And I quote...

"Without the revenue the Broncos bring in for BSU, BSU would still be giving away 2 year degrees in Spark Plug Gapping Methodology."

you agree that the BSU Bronco Football Team keeps BSU afloat financially and without the Bronco Football Team, BSU would not be where it is today?

That is what it appears you are saying by quoting me without any dissenting comments. It appears as though you are in agreement with my observation(s).

Seems I read about 8 million income, 8 million expenses 2012?

Really I think most schools and fans have lost what sports is/was about. But it even starts at high school anymore. Money and winning is the story. Kids practice all summer, if ya want to be a starter in high school ya better be there for summer workouts or very gifted. High schools are having all kind of money drives, some parents start their kids a year later in school so they'll be better in sports.
Win baby, money honey.....

Big East a non qualifier Conference

What do you think about that Bob?

the Big East has one more AQ season in 2013....then it is Show Time, just not from the Big East....
