Idaho Statesman bowl projections: Boise State-UCLA in Las Vegas, Utah State-Toledo in Boise

By Chadd Cripe

Here are my bowl projections for this week:

New Mexico (MW vs. Pac-12), Dec. 15, Albuquerque: Nevada vs. Arizona: Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson told the Fresno Bee last week that New Mexico didn’t make sense for Fresno State (repeat visitor), so I put Nevada here.

Famous Idaho Potato (WAC vs. MAC), Dec. 15, Boise: Utah State vs. Toledo: The Potato Bowl should be a good game again this year. Utah State is having an outstanding season and still could win the WAC and the MAC has enough good teams to send someone with a gaudy record to Boise.

Poinsettia (MW vs. BYU), Dec. 20, San Diego: San Diego State vs. BYU: This is the biggest no-brainer on the list.

MAACO (MW vs. Pac-12), Dec. 22, Las Vegas: Boise State vs. UCLA: If the Broncos win out, they’re still by far the most attractive team because of their name, TV value and likely Top 25 ranking. And unlike Fresno/New Mexico above, the Mountain West doesn’t have any control to prevent a team from going to Las Vegas three years in a row. The opponent will be better if the Pac-12 only gets one team into the BCS — the USC-UCLA loser seems likely — than if the Pac-12 gets two.

Hawaii (MW vs. C-USA), Dec. 24, Honolulu: Fresno State vs. Houston: This would be a nice reward for the Bulldogs if they share the conference title.

Armed Forces (MW vs. C-USA), Dec. 29, Fort Worth, Texas: Air Force vs. East Carolina: Air Force’s attractiveness took a hit with last week’s loss to Army. The Falcons still have to play Fresno State and San Diego State, too.

Rose (Pac-12 vs. Big Ten), Jan. 1, Pasadena, Calif.: Oklahoma vs. Nebraska: The Pac-12 might sneak a second team into the top 14, but Oregon State probably has to beat Stanford. The Rose could take Notre Dame but if the Irish are undefeated there will be pressure to let them go to the Fiesta.

Orange (ACC vs. BCS), Jan. 1, Miami: Florida State vs. Louisville: A chance for Louisville to build some serious poll momentum going into next year.

Sugar (SEC vs. BCS), Jan. 2, New Orleans: Florida vs. Clemson: Clemson is rooting hard against the Pac-12 getting a second bid. That could determine whether the Tigers get a spot.

Fiesta (Big 12 vs. BCS), Jan. 3, Glendale, Ariz.: Kansas State vs. Notre Dame: This could be a matchup of undefeated teams ranked No. 3 and No. 4.

BCS National Championship Game (1 vs. 2), Jan. 7, Miami: Alabama vs. Oregon: If Oregon and Kansas State are undefeated, it will be close. But it’s difficult to imagine Oregon getting left out with its dominance and track record.

•••

I’m writing about sophomore safety Jeremy Ioane’s homecoming for Saturday’s paper. The Honolulu native gets to play in front of family and friends against Hawaii.

“We’re really pleased with how he’s playing,” coach Chris Petersen said. “I still think his best football is in front of him. He’s a smart player. You’re starting to see signs of him being a physical player. I think both those things will continue to increase in his favor.”

•••

Hawaii quarterback Sean Schroeder on why Boise State’s defense is so good against the pass:

“Their D-line gets a lot of pressure on the quarterback. It’s hard to be efficient as a quarterback when you’re lying on your back.”

•••

Boise State linebacker J.C. Percy on the special teams matchup this week:

“Any time we go against a team that has a good special teams unit, it’s going to be a good test, and we’re looking forward to it. Especially after our outing last week, this one’s going to be extra special.”

There are a lot of bowl

There are a lot of bowl games missing from this list. Why did you pick and choose which bowl games to predict?

Florida

i think Chadd just wanted to list the local conference, the local Bowl, and the BCS....otherwise he would still be making the list.

***Chadd***

Any word on the reinstatement of Plinke and Hightower? Did Van Ginkle get another offer to play somewhere else?

Thanks...

God help us

GOD HELP US IF WE PLAY UCLA IN VEGAS...POINT SPREAD...UCLA FAVORED BY 11 TO 14 PTS OR MORE...NO OFFENSIVE AND OUR DEFENSE IS BECOMING DECIMATED WITH SUSPENSIONS AND INJURIES...YOUCH YOUCH...

UCLA AND THE MAACO BOWL

MR. Cripe, please read before you print.Fifth place team from The Pac 12, goes to this bowl game. The UCLA Bruins are in the hunt for a championship.

UCLA is currently 4th in the PAC2

with losses to USC and Stanford ahead, 5th is exactly where pretty much everyone is picking UCLA.

weisburg....ugly agrees in that

UCLA could beat USC and Stanford....

UCLA is good this year and both USC and Stanford can be stopped, especially on offense....

It could be Boise State v USC at MAACO ????

Great minds

Think alike..........

ugly - what if?

what if BSU were to lose one more game?

Would BSU still go to the MAACO Bowl versus USC?

If BSU were to finish 9-3, would the Broncos still go to any bowls?

I don't really know that much about this college football stuff, but; it seems to me there is still a lot of football left to be played by the Broncos.

Not that Post season bowl games are very relevant this season, anyways, as the 2012 season is just a Practice and Scrimmage and Training Season for the BSU Broncos, after blowing the MSU game at the start of the 2012 season, along our march to win a BCS National Championship during the 2013 season, next year, a year from now, actually less than a year, more like 9 and a half months from now until the start of the 2013 football season and the BSU Bronco's chance to have a relevant season and have another opportunity for Idahoans to regain their pride in an Idaho based college football team, now that Idaho has pretty much stunk up the 2012 season and ISU is doing the same.

I am one who really cannot wait until the BSU Broncos bring back a BCS Natty Trophy for all of the citizens of our Great State to enjoy and be proud of, that an Idaho based college football team won the Top Level Championship Trophy.

ugly - do you think BSU can win the remaining games and get into a post season bowl?

If you think they can, do you think the learning and experience will help the BSU Broncos go undefeated next year when BSU joins the Big East Conference?

ugly - one more question for you:

Do you think many members of Bronco Nation wil travel to many of the away games next year (2013 season) when BSU joins the Big East - or, do you think joining the Big East is a Bug Mistake?

I really want to learn of your opinions and thoughts on these matters, as you are usually extremely accurate with your predictions and projections, unlike some of the other blabbers around here.

You are to be commended for being the 3-D Thinker that you are. Of course, I attribute that to your Vandal lineage and good parenting skills by a fellow Vandal parent.

Vandals do seem to make the best parents, I have noticed, throughout life.

BSU4342, Razor, or other Bronco Fans on Big East....

Ugly has no problem with the Big East, there are many good schools in that conference....

For Boise State, I have predicted the Big East will be a Big Mistake for three (3) reasons:

1. The tv monies wont be as profitable as proposed.
2. It will limit Boise States National Championship Chances.
3. It will limit their exposure and chances to one of 6 BCS Bowls.

Now if someone disagrees, prove or debate that those three premises are wrong....

I stated those three (3) premises over a years ago and have now seen articles that are showing I was right all along....for instance, why did the Big East Comissioner just propose a need for a 7th Big BCS Bowl game that has the Big East winner automatically in it?

Just thoughts....

Disagree

1. More profitable than you propose.
2. It will not limit Boise State's National Championship Chances.
3. It will not limit their exposure and chances to one of 6 BCS Bowls.

Now if someone disgress, prove or debate that those three premises are wrong...

I stated those three (count em 1,2,3(it means even more the more times I put things in parentheses for all you leeches)) premises over a million years ago and have now seen articles on Fox News that are showing I was right all along. Even before the earth existed (like 2,007 days ago)...for instance, why did the Big East Comissioner just propose a need for a 7th Big BCS Bowl game that has the Big East winner automatically in it? I mean really, like who does he think he is, like um the Big East Comissioner(?) I mean geeze, doesn't he like have basketball bowl meetings to attend. OMG

VNDL....I dont have stats in my head like

B-Stats....with last election I have been focusing on financial portolio and what to do....tire of CDs returning under 2% for past 4 years and need some changes, such as more silver....

I believe the MWC has 3 Bowl offers (MAACO and New Mexico--cant remember the other one)....

The Broncos will win their next two, but probably lose to Nevada and yes making them 9-3 for the season....if so, then Boise State will be in New Mexico Bowl....

lets hope Boise wins final 3 and finishes BCS #22.... Boise will then play Stanford at the MAACO Bowl....UCLA will beat Stanford....Californians are very tired of rich and successful Americans, thus UCLA will pound them out-of-town enroute to China....this way they can tax the 'common' lawn mower and turn their economy around....

Yes, VNDL the Big East will be a Big Mistake for Boise State....

PS....for BSU4342, I think when VNDL asks Ugly a question, he also has it as a open question for all....feel free to comment before the liberals monitor 100% the internet....

Yes I read cripe's projections and there are 5 mwc in them....if those are true, then we could have a mwc team with a 5-7 record in a Bowl....

Do the 35 Bowls guarantee that 5 must have a mwc team in it?

I know 3 of them do, so that is where I was going....

Φ Issues and answers

ugly, The Lost ... do you realize that the MWC has 5 bowl ties-ins and has 4 teams bowl-eligible already? If Air Force can win one of its final 3 (@SDSU, Hawaii at home, @Fresno State), they are in, too. They will run over Hawaii and qualify. There's your 5.

Big East?

Can you agree, disagree, add, subtract, to any of the 3?

A cfb forum with fees usually generates the best thinkers out there, and 'weeds' out the leeches....

ugly - I am in

I will continue on a subscription basis - for the exact reason you bring up.

The leeches will be gone and we will be left with thinkers and not posters who just want to bash other posters because they don't agree on opinions.

I find it interesting that any serious discussion about the merits of BSU joining the Big East or not, get stifled and quashed by some of the leeches on these boards.

An interesting correlation is that those that don't want to pay for subscriptions, are also not members of the BAA and have not contributed to the expansion of Bronco Stadium and are not supporting the BSU Bronco Football Team in any meaningful way, other than lip service.

I will be curious to see who is still on these blogs after the subscription basis begins.

We already know of one (razor) that has indicated he is gone. How many more are there that are going to 'hang it up'?

VNDL

VNDL....I am in too....

I have always stated that I was not a big Bronco Fan, but just admired them for what they have done....

I am a Vandal, and always will be....

I like Boise and I was a paperboy back in the 1970s for the Idaho Statesman....Those were the days when we had to collect all the money, pay our bill, and what was left over was ours....it was good !!!! It taught me alot about people, personalities, and salesmanship....

it taught me about people....

I attribute my success not only as a Vandal and with two degrees from the one and only University of Idaho; but also from my work ethic as a young lad delivering Idaho Statesman newspapers to over 120 subscribers starting at 4:15 AM....

I also worked for a dairyman in the Payette area during the summers of 72-73....

Boise State needs to be aggressive and quit being so passive as if everyone still loves them because of Fiesta and Georgia....time moves on, and no-one cares about the past....

Coach Pete needs to say more....and yes, you are right, is his goal a National Championship? if not let us aggressive ones know so we can quit following and donating....if not, then Pete is a Leech Too !!!!

Yes, I am curious what the new format will look like, what it will cost, and whom will stick around....

Φ This is great!

ugly is going to pay to play because he learned his young ladship by carrying IS dried pulp. I'm wondering if that 120 for whom he toiled then (while spotting cheaters everywhere) had a +/- factor. If he hit 70 lawns, porches, dogs, or elderly (on his 1972 Schwinn, purchased in Ontario, previously owned by FO's aunt before FO himself) on average, he qualified for the Monochrome Bowl.

Good thing that in mono it's uphill only at 4:15 and only uphill at Brewer-Shipley Blvd.

Love, Attila the Liberal

rzr

This is an example of where you are way off base. It's obvious to me that you must be a transplant from some other location and had silver spoon in the mouth. I understand what it means to deliver papers and accepting the risk that subscribers would actually pay their monthly newspaper delivery fee. And, I understand 1st hand what it means to go from the milk barn to the school bus. If you had the 1st hand experience that Ugs and I bring to the table you wouldn't be so jealous that we are true Idahoans.

VNDL....

Some folks dont understand the value of hard work and the great past here in Idaho....

In California, the 'Leech Law' was just pa$$ed....you and others know that this is no more than those wanting more monies from those that have worked and succeeded and then having to give it back to those that wont so they dont have to....in other words, Robin Hood.

It is easy for others to raise taxes on another group....

The 'Good Ole Hard Work' days are gone and now we are in the 'Age of Entitlements'....

SIF - you had a bus to get to school - you lucky dog

When I was 11 years old I was running a baler, riding a slip, and stacking hay bales with the old Bascos. Then we picked rocks - tons of rocks and tons of spuds. Then we got serious and started working.

You 'city' guys that delivered papers had it easy, lolol.

I got to milk cows once in a while, too - 18 of them by hand - twice a day - every couple of months for a week or so when the owner went out of town to see his kids in college.

Then we got to walk to school - about a mile and a half, do our sports and go home and shovel coal for about an hour or so to be warm - then do our homework and then watch Gunsmoke or Paladin on KMVT - the only TV channel in Magic Valley - then go to bed - and do it all over again the next day. We didn't know anything else. Life was good.

In the winters we got to ride on wagons and feed cows with the hay bales we stacked in the summer.

Always something to do - hard and physical. But we always had time to do 4-H and Boy Scouts, Little League, Outlaw Basketball Tournaments, FFA, Cheerleader Evaluations, and other wholesome stuff for teen aged kids to do. Got to taste a beer once in a while too when we could get our hands on 11 ounce coors cans (every case had a Church Key - no pop tops in those days). We used to use the irrigation canals as our 'coolers' or just drank them warm - didn't really matter. Beer was beer; cold, cool, warm or hot.

Then I went to Idaho and got to retire from the farming and ranching life and get 'civilized' and 'refined'.

It wasn't until I went to Moscow at age 18 that I found out you could eat beef. I thought we just raised it and sold it - all we ever ate was deer, elk, pheasant, and tuna fish in cans. Never butchered any cows. Even sold the crippled ones.

People like razor just take their quality of lives for granted and don't really appreciate the hard work that it took to build Idaho and that some of us had to go through to get to where we are today. They can't really understand how we can be 'Idahoan' Vandals and be Bronco Boosters and supporters of the BSU Bronco Football Team and feel great pride when the BSU Broncos someday win a BCS Natty Trophy (which they will in time), at the same time.

It is not their fault that they are the way they are. They don't know any better and don't have the connection with our Great State that we have. They came from different backgrounds and led different lives, is all.

VNDL

VNDL

No, I didn't have to deliver papers (like my oldest twin sons) but I was up at 3:45 AM to chase the cows into the barn...and then I worked with my dad until 7:30 AM and went directly from the barn to the school bus stop about 1/4 mile away where I'd board the bus that would pick up my classmates along the West Point and Bob Barton Highway until we reached Mapleton Road and turn north to Wendell. All of us caught the bus from the barn.

You are correct...that is how we grew up in the Magic Valley. Some of us were lucky to play sports and when we did the reality was that we waited until all the chores were completed before our parents were able to drive into town to pick us up and take us home. But, that was our life and it was normal.

I remember getting my sips of beer at the West Point Store and I remember how proud I was to be a member of UI's 100th graduating class along with with the grand-daughter (who was also a cheerleader) of the owners of the West Point Store. The owners of the store purchased it from my great uncle.

VNDL...I sure do enjoy knowing how deeply rooted I am in the Magic Valley and I feel sorry for the personalities on this site who have no idea what it means to be and Idaho Vandal.

sif....bringing back good memories on farms and in Ag

School at Idaho....

Yes, I fed cows their silage and corn. and in afternoon, killed gophers....never milked cows though....

this is good that we Idaho folks can bring some online education to those in City that have never been around this type of stuff....most Boiseans have probably never made a silage pit before? Back in the days, they looked like green bread loaves in the field....

there is nothing like cleaning the cow bins when they are in the parlor....

What I remember most is being able to take home the raw milk on Fridays....every Friday, the boss would let us take two gallons home....

life was good without OSHA and PETA....

Ugs

What I remember most is the freedom to roam along the canel banks and shoot magpies with beebee and pellet guns until they'd fall out of the Russian Olive trees.

I also lived on a spawning fish hatchery in Springfield and enjoyed the entertainment of shooting mud ducks near the shores of the American Falls Resivouir and taking a pitch fork to harvest the carp.

Lot's of fun...then growing up in the winter we'd make hockey sticks and pucks in woodshop and then play hockey on the ice covered ponds surrounding American Falls Res...lots of fun and lots of work growing up.

That was the Idaho way...as VNDL said...there's lot's of personalities on this site who have no idea what it means to be an Idahoan...especially an Idaho Vandal.

SIF & ugly - Remembering Silage Pits

I remember when we had oodles and oodles of pheasants.

In the evenings in January and February we would go to the silage pits where pheasants congregated at nights eating the corn on the ground in the silage pits. We would take a salmon egg hook and about 50 feet of 30 pound test fishing line (sturgeon line) and put a piece of the silage corn on the little hook and tie the end of the line to a fence post and the other end with the corn hook at the edge of the silage pit.

Then we would go back in the morning and see if we caught any pheasants. We always caught a few which we ate. I got so sick of eating pheasants. I was in New York City years ago and in a high end restaurant one night. Everybody in our group ate pheasant (a real delicacy back East) and I had fetucinne noodles with alfredo sauce.

I tried to catch ducks the same way, but never did catch a duck. Ducks are smarter than pheasants I guess.

Also, it was funny to see cows get near the pits and drink the silage water (collected from run off snow) at the edges of the pits and drink the silage water and get drunk. The silage water was basically fermented corn and had a high alcohol content. The cows would have a hard time walking in a straight line away when we would chase them away. Sometimes they had a hard time standing up and would lose their balance and walk right into the ground.

The cows would get addicted to the silage water and would go through barbed wire fences to get to it. After a cow had gotten to the silage water, we usually had to put them in another area or sell them so they wouldn't tear the fences down trying to get to their 'fix'.

Fresh whole raw milk is the best and we would make our own butter from the cream. But, if you drank too much raw milk and you were not used to it, you would get the 'drizzlies'. I always thought it was funny when people would come for the summer for a week or so and we would give them raw milk and encourage them to 'drink up' all they wanted. I don't think you can buy raw milk anywhere anymore.

My Grandmother made cottage cheese and another type of a whitish 'quick cheese'. But after she passed, my Mom didn't keep doing it, because it was very time consuming and it was easier to get it in the stores.

VNDL

VNDL

LOL! LOL! you are making me LMAO! My DAD and my grandpa would NEVER let a cow get near the silage pit. We did have a few pet cows that we spoiled who ate too much of what wasn't good for them and they bloated and died. Therefore, I never wanted to get into the crosshairs of my dad!

As for pheasants...I ate my fill of them on the farm and have never mustered much of a taste for them or deer, elk or duck since leaving the Magic Valley.

One time, I had a rat,

it died smothered in it's own crap. Get a room!

I had to watch a kid killing the mice in the hayloft once...

at the dairy I was a foster child at in '83. I loved the routine of the farm but I told my foster mom they could give him more Phillies, thank you!

Ugly must not be paying attention...

Coach Pete has constantly and consistently stated that he doesn't care about things he can't control. The chief example of that is the ranking, specifically the BCS rankings. With an appearance in the NC game a direct result of voters and computers which can not be controlled by Coach Pete, he focuses instead on the one thing he can at least TRY to control - his players and Coaches getting better every week. If you focus on ratings, clippings or even your opponent you lose the very focus that leads to your success. If you end up with the higher score at the end of the game but didn't improve or live up to your potential, you failed. If you've ever coached youth sports you, hopefully, have taught your young players this reality. It's not the score, it's realizing your potential.

frogg99g - you said . . .

. . . en parte: " . . With an appearance in the NC game a direct result of voters and computers which can not be controlled by Coach Pete, he focuses instead on the one thing he can at least TRY to control - his players and Coaches getting better every week."

Are you saying you believe Coach Pete should not have as a goal for the BSU Broncos, a National Championship, because he has no control over whether or not the Broncos can get there?

If that is, indeed your premise, then why even have a CFB team at BSU to begin with?

Color me naive, but I was under the impression that the burning desire and Primary Motivation of any FBS Head Coach was get an appearance in a NC game.

I dunno, maybe it is just a new way of looking at it and you are right.

Go Broncos.

VNDL

BAA Member # 63799

PS - I can see where voters and computers have an impact on the BCS rankings, but does not the actual win/loss record of the teams play at least a small role in getting an appearance in the NC game or is it just the 'direct result' of the voters and the computers that decides which teams will appear in the NC game and which teams won't.

frogg99g....

The goals you stated, are those not the same goals of all cfb coaches? However, the most specific goal of a dozen or so cfb coaches is to win the National Championship....

Here is what Pete's ultimate goals should be:

1. To win the National Championship
2. To play in one of the top 6 BCS Bowl Series Games
3. To win the Big East Conference

Anything less, then why even coach....you might say well Coach Pete could care less what you think! If so, then I could care less what Coach Pete thinks as well....I would rather watch teams whose goals are the Top....

Coach Pete makes over $3M PY to . . .

help youth/kids reach their potential and not focus on winning the actual games, per an analysis of what frog99g is intoning, I guess. I dunno. I have read it several times and it still comes out the same way every time I read it.

Here is what frog99g has said, en parte:

" . . . Coach Pete has constantly and consistently stated that he doesn't care about things he can't control . . . he focuses instead on the one thing he can at least TRY to control - his players and Coaches getting better every week. . .
If you've ever coached youth sports you, hopefully, have taught your young players this reality. It's not the score, it's realizing your potential."

In addition, frogg99g does not believe Coach Pete should focus on winning games and has said, en parte:

" If you focus on . . . your opponent you lose the very focus that leads to your success. If you end up with the higher score at the end of the game but didn't improve or live up to your potential, you failed."

Frog99g correlates CFB with Youth football and the role of a coach at the CFB level is apparrently to help the 'kids' live up to their potential, and has stated, en parte:

" . . . If you've ever coached youth sports you, hopefully, have taught your young players this reality. It's not the score, it's realizing your potential."

I am sitting back and just scratching my head, trying to figure out why Head Coaches of other Top Notch National Powerhouse College Football Teams want to win football games and set high goals for their teams to accomplish, and BSU gets stuck with somebody that just wants to help the kids on the team to be good kids and reach their potential and gets paid over $3M per year to do it?

Maybe frog99g misstated his position or I have totally misunderstood his position to begin with?

Go Broncos.

VNDL

BAA Member # 63799

As usual, totally misunderstood.

He is saying coach pete probably doesn't have national championship written down on some napkin somewhere. Are you suggesting this means all of the coaches and players at BSU don't want a NC?

Frog is saying that coach pete makes goals that he can step-by-step guide his team to. You are suggesting napkins, while Frog suggests focus, winning games, winning conference titles, and being prepared to win more games after that. If the broncos don't write down Outback Bowl on a napkin, does that mean they aren't shooting for high enough goals? That they will turn down the offer when it comes in? They could put Super Bowl and world donination on a napkin and send it to you to hang on your wall. Will that make you feel better about your frivolous donations?
