Josh Buss, Mountain View: The Mavericks kept their playoff hopes alive with a 48-22 victory over Eagle. The junior running back rushed for a school-record 244 yards on 28 carries with three touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 30 yards and another TD.
Maddi Osburn, Vallivue: The Falcons won their first 5A District Three championship since moving up to the classification in 2005. Osburn, a junior outside hitter, played in every game for the Falcons during their title run, including five hours and 11 games last Thursday to knock off defending district champion Rocky Mountain. In those three matches, Osburn racked up a team-high 38 kills.
Hannah Heffner, Bishop Kelly: The Knights won their third consecutive 4A state championship last week. Heffner, a four-year letterman and two-year starter, scored one goal from the center back position. Coach Curtis Eisenberger said the team captain's leadership and dominance on the back line was crucial in their run to the state championship.
Sergio Gonzalez, Fruitland: The Grizzlies advanced to their first 3A state championship game appearance behind the play of their junior goalkeeper. Gonzalez made key saves in Fruitland's 1-0 overtime victory against Teton in the semifinals and was near perfect in Fruitland's 1-0 loss to Gooding in the title game.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Emily Hamlin, Boise: The sophomore captured the 5A District Three individual title in 18 minutes, 28.8 seconds, helping the Braves finish second as a team. Hamlin's time on the Eagle Island State Park course ranks second among all classifications this season according to athletic.net.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Dwain Stucker, Meridian: The sophomore won the 5A District Three individual title in 15 minutes, 58.0 seconds as they Warriors finished fourth as a team. Stucker's time on the Eagle Island State Park course ranks ninth among all classifications this season according to athletic.net.
