Name the Score contest for Boise State-Michigan State with Murphy prediction

By Brian Murphy

It's back!

The Chicago Connection "Name the Score" contest is back for its fourth season here at Murph's Turf. Many thanks to Chicago Connection for providing the prize (a gift certificate for a free pizza) each week.

The rules are pretty much the same as they have been, but for any newcomers here they are:

No. 24 Boise State visits No. 13 Michigan State on Friday (6 p.m., ESPN) and here is your chance to predict the score and win a prize.

Place your guess with a winner and both teams' score in the comments down below and we will pick one winner. (Please limit one guess per commenter.)

The closest to the actual score of the game wins.

Listen to my audio prediction sponsored by Rockitecture. (Note: You may have trouble playing the audio in Firefox. We're working on the problem.)

All entries must be received by 5 p.m. MT on Friday.

When you register to make comments at, you put in an e-mail address. I will contact the winner through that e-mail address.

If it comes down to tiebreakers, closest to Boise State's actual score, closest without going over and then first received will be the tie-breaking order.

MSU 24 - BSU 20

It hurts so bad to post this, but I gotta be realistic.

really need that pizza huh?

BSU 29 MSU 23

Here we go Broncos in double OT

BSU 27 - MSU 21

Give Coach Pete enough time and he will have a winning game plan. The Southwick era begins with a W... but a missed extra point.

MSU 30 - BSU 21

Sorry Blue, this ain't your year.

MSU 34 - BSU 17

not in East Lansing

MSU 31 - BSU 10

The Spartans are out to prove themselves this year

MSU 43 - BSU 17

Only game I think we lose this season; MSU 37 - BSU 23

BSU 31 MSU 28

BSU 31 MSU 28

BSU 31 - MSU 24

Joe gets them in the end!

BSU 24 MSU 9

MSU 17 BSU 20

Close, but I think the "Coach Pete" factor remains.

MSU 28-BSU 27

MSU 28-BSU 27

BSU 34 - MSU 31

Close game, but the kick is gooooood!!!!!!

MSU 24-BSU 7

I'm still mad that BSU beat my ducks....twice. But I will be rooting for the broncos.

BSU 17 - MSU 16

BSU 31 - MSU 28

I believe!

So negative guys...

Boise State 24 -Mich State 20

BSU 20 - MSU 17

Good defensive matchup. BSU has some nice new players on defense and more size and speed on the field this year than ever before! BSU wins a hard fought game!

BSU 22, MSU 21

They go for two on the last play.

MSU 31, BSU 17

Spartans win 31 to 17

BSU20 MSU 13

MSU Defense holds Boise to 2 Td's and 2 field goals, but BSU Defense surprised MSU and holds them to just 1 Td and 2 field goals...!

MSU 24, BSU 21

Sorry guys. If this were a home game it would be in your favor....

BSU 27-MSU 20

If I can't be a homer, why post on message boards. I'm not supremely confident, but since I don't have to wager anything against said pizza, I will back the Broncos.

BSU 17, MSU 14

My best guess...

BSU 27 MSU 19

MSU 27, BSU 17

Tough first game for BSU in a transition year. BSU will lead MSU once during the game. Unfortunately, in the first half. No blowout. A respectable win for MSU. A respectable loss for BSU. BSU will finish the regular season with only one loss. The Broncos and the ASU Sun Devils are 1-1. I hope for the rubber match in the next MAACO Las Vegas Bowl. Go Broncos! Go Devils!

Boise State 37 Michigan

Boise State 37
Michigan State 13

Boise State

BSU 27 MSU 14

Boise State

BSU 24 MSU 10

BSU Wins

BSU 20 MSU 16

28.66 to17

Boise State over MSU

(the 28.66 points is what top 50 offenses averaged against them last year)

Φ Thank you,

Señor Stats.

Realistic would be...

....31-10 Michigan State. BSU will probably still win 9-10 games against the rest of their inferior opponents. But their inexperienced 3-star recruits won't hold up agains MSU's experienced 4-5 star guys.

Did you know that when Boise State took the field last year against Georgia, Boise had one 4-star on their roster. Georgia? 32 4 and 5 star recruits were on the field for the Bulldogs.........

Realistically anyway......

If BSU wins I could see them not losing another game this year

MSU 31
BSU 24

34-17 BSU

The offense is a system and Pete can plug in a lot of players to the system. The newness of the players will be a factor but not as much as people think.
Broncos get two two point conversions and a fake punt of field goal. That is not figured into my score prediction.
For an extra topping on my pizza I predict that no national media refers to it as a blowout, that they all talk about how BSU can play "one game" with anybody and that the broncos have played thier "one game" for the year. ESPN will have a vested interest to brush off the broncos for the year because of TV contracts just like last year. But ESPN will jump on the bandwagon next year if they sign big east contract

BSU 27 MSU 12

I'm gonna look for some defensive scoring from our monster defense and guess that MSU will come up way short. And after the game, I hope MSU does make it to the Rose Bowl. The teams we embarass in the season opener always seem to finish the season well.

Bsu 31

Historical Faith

BSU 28
MSU 24

BSU 23 MSU 21

despite what I "think" will happen, I have faith that Coach Pete and his staff will find a way to win.
BTW, if you picked BSU to lose, you're not a real Bronco fan !

MSU 27- BSU 13

A couple of costly turnovers with failing to convert managable 3rd downs dooms the Broncos.

TBK! Not TRUE! Im a huge homer I just want to be real!

If BSU were in the Big Ten, It'd just be another conference game

I'm somewhat shocked to see all the negative outlooks for this game considering all the talk within Bronco Nation over the years about how BSU could run the table in a BCS conference. It sure is interesting however, to see how much that particular mindset has changed with a single graduating class.

Φ You saw the scrimmage

and so did plenty of others. There's a reason for cautious optimism and, yes, even some negativity.

I prefer to call it uncertainty. Apart from what looks to be a very solid defense, there is uncertainty about the offense now in the hands of unproven Joe Southwick. You, yourself, stated that Joe has no business as an FBS QB. You may have been correct and we'll be a long way toward that answer Friday night.

The kickers looked very good at the scrimmage ... and that position is anything but certain. The job there is to score points at every opportunity. We saw the adventure that even PATs were last season. Until we see a couple of successful 40-yarders, who is comfortable?

This isn't like the past three seasons when far more was known than unknown and we knew the offense was potent. We don't know quite what to expect at this point.

I did, however, pick BSU, 17-16 ... on the strength of the defense and a conservative, no mistakes offensive game plan. And, yeah, a field goal.

All programs experience the ebb and flow of players

The scrimmage was a train wreck, but a scrimmage is different than a game, especially a season opener. I think that despite being extremely weak at the QB position, Coach Pete and his staff will prepare a solid game plan that will put the Broncos in a position to win. As for my thoughts on Southwick, nothing has changed, but like it or not, he's the guy, for now, but with that being said, I think that were going to see a rotation of QB's running some plays we've never seen before, which will hopefully disrupt and confuse the Spartan defense. The key to victory will be in our run game. If we can establish a solid run game, it'll take a lot of pressure off of our QBs. In addition, I expect that our TE's are going to have a huge night. I'm nervous, like any Bronco fan should be, but I'm not picking us to lose

Φ I hope you are right

about the variety of plays. Oh, we've seen them before ... but not for the last 4 years.

I predict MSU stacks the box and makes Joe throw to prove that he can. I would; wouldn't you?

I think this Bronco team is very, very good, but young/inexperienced at some key backup positions. Im not sold on the kicking game and not sold yet on the QB play. That doesnt mean I dont want the Broncos to win or that they cant win. Losing a QB who went 50-3, a now starting NFL RB, numerous defensive players who are now in the NFL, will no doubt hurt this team. How can it not? The Broncos are playing a Top 15 opponent on the Road with numerous question marks. Im hesitant to believe the Broncos can beat a team with a Top 5 defense right now.

I personally have not felt the Broncos could have ever run the table in a BCS conference because of depth.

Have you no faith in the program as a whole?

I think Bronco Nation is putting too much stock into the scrimmage. Yes, we're weak at the QB position, but we're still strong elsewhere. Coach Pete is a darn good football coach, and I think that we're going to see just how good he is Friday night.

Theres no question

...he's a darn good coach but not every coach wins every game. I think Coach Pete is the best coach in America but he can still be out-coached. I'm not losing faith I just think MSU is a better team Friday. That's all.
