Tanner Gustavsen, Boise: The Braves ended a 13-game losing streak that dated back to the 2010 season with a 38-24 victory over rival Borah at Dona Larsen Park. Gustavsen, a senior quarterback, completed 15-of-24 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns and added 66 rushing yards. It also marked the first season-opening win for the Braves since 2005.
Ashlyn Bartlett, Vallivue: The Falcons won the season-opening Kuna Tournament over the weekend by beating Cascade, Meridian, Bishop Kelly, Boise, Greenleaf and Parma. On Thursday, Vallivue defeated Meridian 25-17, 25-15, 25-11 and Bartlett contributed eight kills and four blocks with a hitting percentage of .325. During the tournament, the senior middle blocker averaged four kills per game and contributed eight blocks.
Jenna Morris, Eagle: The Mustangs picked up two victories last week to rebound from a season-opening loss to 2011 state runner-up Boise the previous week. Morris, a senior forward and four-year starter, scored one goal in each game as Eagle beat Meridian (2-0) and Timberline (2-1).
Tyson Fox, Rocky Mountain: The Grizzlies did not win a single game in 2011, but are off to a 4-0 start this season. Fox, a junior captain, contributed a combined two goals and two assists in wins over Vallivue (5-1) and Mountain View (2-1) last week.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Paige Dilmore, Rocky Mountain: The junior opened the 2012 season with a victory at the Camels Back Invitational. Dilmore's time of 18 minutes, 57.40 seconds over the 5-kilometer course is the fastest in the state so far this season.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Justin Ross, Rocky Mountain: The Grizzlies won the team title at the Camels Back Invitational as Ross clocked a meet best time of 16:40.36. The senior's time is the third fastest in the state this season and tops among District Three athletes.
