1. DRAG YER REAR TO EMMETT
When August arrives, it's time for burned rubber, exploded eardrums and ice-cold beer. Firebird Raceway is hosting its major event of the summer this weekend: the 41st annual Nightfire Nationals. It's a trip to experience — and not just the cars. Hundreds of racers will spew fire and smoke Friday through Sunday. Warning: There’s a brief moment of profanity in the amateur 20-second vid below, which sorta says it all. (See a more more professional video of Nightfire here.)
2. WEAR BLACK TO THE KNIT
Godfather of goth Peter Murphy inspired a generation of post-rock spookiness in British band Bauhaus. He’ll headline Sunday night at the Knitting Factory for a crowd of reverent fans.
3. BE RE-‘BOURNE’
Jeremy Renner has taken the helm of the action-thriller “Bourne” franchise. Reviews are mixed so far, but several critics like "The Bourne Legacy" a whole bunch. Either way, if you want fast and furious, this is your ticket.
4. ENJOY ART IN THE PARK
We’re still a month away from the real Art in the Park, but you can get a jump start on browsing for candles, jewelry and other handmade art at the Nampa Festival of the Arts on Saturday and Sunday in Lakeview Park.
5. SWEETEN YOUR DEMEANOR
Confession: When it was first proposed to me, I was skeptical of publishing a review of a walk-up ice-cream joint. But after reviewer Alex Kiesig started enthusing about the hand-dipped corn dogs and hard-shell-chocolate-coated frozen bananas, I was sold on Fanci Freez on State Street. “There are plenty of Boise traditions that aren’t half as fun on a summer night,” Kiesig says. See you there.
