Matt Oddonetto of Boise High and Madelyn Weltzin of Mountain View High — both 2012 graduates — helped their Intermountain squad finish fifth at the World TeamTennis Junior Nationals Championship on Thursday at the George E. Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
In the fifth-place final, Intermountain Irrationality defeated Miami Dream Team 44-39. The Intermountain team was comprised of players from Idaho, Colorado and Nevada.
The WTT Junior Nationals, which is hosted by WTT co-founder Billie Jean King, is a national junior invitational event featuring 16 coed teams from throughout the United States. The teams use the World TeamTennis format during their three days of non-elimination draw competition.
Team matches consist of eight events, with two sets each of boys and girls singles, one set of boys and girls doubles, and two sets of mixed doubles. The first team to reach six games wins each set.
Weltzin, a former 5A girls singles state champion, will compete for Idaho State beginning this fall. Oddonetto, who was the 5A boys singles state runner-up in May, has committed to the University of Idaho.
