Three Idaho baseball players selected for 2012 Area Code games

Rocky Mountain High's Mason Smith (OF), Fruitland's Joe Martarano (3B) and Lake City's Mitch Bevacqua (INF) were chosen to play for the 2012 Kansas City Royals at the 2012 Area Code Baseball Games. All three will be seniors this fall.

Players are selected by invitation only and are often nominated by a Major League scout. The Area Code Games have produced more than 500 Major League players.

This year's games feature eight regional teams, with games running Aug. 5-10 at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

According to ESPN.com, every major league team is represented at the event, with some teams having as many as 12 scouts from their organization in attendance. College coaches are also allowed to attend the games.

The Area Code games began in 1986 and has grown into one of the highest regarded high school talent tournaments in the country.

In addition, Smith also received an invitation to play at the 17-and-under Team USA Baseball team trials Aug 10-16 at the USA Baseball Training Center in Cary, N.C.
