Borah High's Owens named Gatorade Idaho girls track athlete of year

Brittany Owens

Brittany Owens of Borah High was selected as the 2011-12 Gatorade Idaho Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.

It is the second straight honor for the senior.

The 5-foot-11 jumper and sprinter swept the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 5.5 inches and the triple jump (38-11) for the third consecutive season at the 5A state meet in May. In April, Owens became the first female in Idaho history to eclipse 20 feet in the long jump, setting a state record with a mark of 20 feet, 1/4 inch.

“Brittany Owens is truly a remarkable person as well as a great athlete,” YMCA Team Idaho director Tim Severa said. “She treats her competition with tremendous respect and is very humble in her own abilities.”

Owens has signed a national letter of intent to compete in track and field on an athletic scholarship at Louisville beginning this fall.
