Americans Amber Neben and Evelyn Stevens – contenders for the U.S. Olympic team in the time trial — finished first and second, respectively, in the Kuna Time Trial Stage 2 of the Exergy Tour on Saturday.
Neben and Stevens are competing with Boise Olympic gold medal cyclist Kristin Armstrong for two spots on the U.S. Olympic time trial team. Armstrong won the 2008 gold medal in the event in the Beijing Games.
Neben finished the 10.4-mile course in 21 minutes, 37 seconds unofficially. Stevens was second at 21:52. Canadian Clara Hughes finished third at 21:57.
Neben, riding for Team Specialized-lululemon, captured the yellow leader's jersey with her performance.
It rained throughout the race on the third day of the five-day inaugural Exergy Tour, a $100,000 women's professional cycling race in Southwestern Idaho.
Stage 3 is Sunday from Garden Valley to Idaho City.
Pre-race
Wet conditions awaited the professional women cyclists in Saturday's Stage 2 of the Exergy Tour in Kuna. It has been raining all morning in Kuna and the forecast calls for a 30-percent chance of rain all day. (Judging from the rain falling currently, I'd say that number percentage is a little low.)
The 10.4-mile time trial stage is very flat with just 150 feet of elevation change.
It will be a showcase for the time trialists in the field, which is down to 98 from the original start list of 103. The biggest loss for the tour is Boise Olympic gold medal cyclist Kristin Armstrong, who crashed in Thursday's prologue and fractured her clavicle.
Saturday's time trial was expected to have an Olympic-sized subplot with Armstrong and American rivals Amber Neben and Evelyn Stevens racing head-to-head-to-head for the first time this season — and less than three weeks before USA Cycling selects its Olympic team on June 15.
Stevens, the reigning U.S. time trial champion, and Neben, the 2008 time trial world champ, will compete as will former time trial national champions Clara Hughes (Canada), Shara Gillow (Australia), Allison Powers (U.S.), Olivia Dillon (Ireland), Emilia Fahlin (Sweden) and Latoya Brulee (Belgium).
Armstrong was the 2008 Olympic gold medalist at the Beijing Games.
The first rider begins at 10:55 a.m. and the final one starts at 12:36 p.m. with riders going off in one-minute intervals in reverse order of overall standings.
