Reports: Boise State sticking with Big East plan

By Brian Murphy

Boise State still plans to join the Big East in football next season, after considering staying in the Mountain West, and reported Friday.

Boise State has not told the Big East it is not planning on honoring the contract it signed with the conference last year, a Big East official told the Statesman on Friday.

Boise State declined comment on the reports. Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell declined comment on the status of Boise State's talks with the league about housing its non-football programs.

The Big East will holds its annual conference meetings next week in Ponte Vedra, Fla. Boise State Athletic Director Mark Coyle will attend the meetings.

The athletic directors, senior woman administrator, men's and women's basketball coaches and football coaches from all Big East members and incoming schools were invited. Boise State football coach Chris Petersen will not attend. Pittsburgh and Syracuse, which are leaving for the ACC, will not attend the meetings.

Is a step into the past so bad???

In Boise State's last four seasons as a member of the Big West Conference, the Broncos led the league in attendance. During the 2000-01 season, the Broncos averaged 8,448 fans per game to rank 57th nationally. In 1999-2000 Boise State averaged 7,657 fans per game to rank 67th nationally, while in 1998-99, Boise State averaged 7,988 fans per game to not only lead the league but rank 59th in the country. In 1997-98, a Big West best 7,040 fans per game turned out at Taco Bell Arena to rank the team 70th in the nation.

I hope this works out, but there hasn't been much stability for a while.
