University of Idaho wide receiver Ken McRoyal died early Sunday morning in California.
Details of his death were not released by the school, but KXLY in Spokane is reporting that McRoyal was shot and killed at a party at the Brewery Lofts in Los Angeles' Lincoln Heights neighborhood.
The Los Angeles Times reported that a second man was shot in the same incident. The Times did not name McRoyal.
On Friday, McRoyal wrote on his Facebook page that he was "Back to Cali to spend time with my daughter, Memorial day BBQ with my family, and work out 24/7."
McRoyal tweeted from his Twitter account (@ItsMe8Six) early Sunday morning that he was in Los Angeles.
"It's a devastating loss," coach Robb Akey said. "We've lost a brother, a teammate, a family member. But, more importantly, a momma lost her son today. All of our prayers go to the family – that they can be strong in their healing from this tragedy."
McRoyal joined the Vandals as a walk-on in 2011 from El Camino Junior College. A senior-to-be from New Orleans who moved to California after Hurricane Katrina, McRoyal played in eight games last year, including one start, and caught six passes for 35 yards. He had earned a scholarship for the 2012 season.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Kenny," Idaho Athletic Director Rob Spear said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."
