Boise's legislative District 17 needs a stronger voice in the Legislature, says Greg Nielson, a small businessman challenging three-term incumbent Rep. Sue Chew.
"There is a lot of interest in building a new strong Team 17 — a team working aggressively for the district and for Idaho," wrote Nielson, in response to our Wednesday editorial endorsing Chew. "As a legislator I will be a valuable asset and look forward to working with and serving my neighbors in our community."
Here is Nielson's full rebuttal:
As I have canvassed District 17, I have met many considerate, gracious people who are eager to share their issues and concerns regarding our community. I am dismayed that the Idaho Statesman’s editorial board may not appreciate the demand for fresh ideas and approaches to government that District 17 voters have expressed to me.
Voters believe that taxes due on Internet sales should be collected. My position on Internet sales tax collection is strong and well-developed. I believe these legal taxes could generate a great deal of needed revenue. Collection of Internet sales taxes would restore competitive balance for our local businesses that are at a disadvantage in competing with large out-of-state corporations.
As a devoted family man, I believe that strong families build strong communities. I am committed to the community I live in and to improving our quality of life.
I feel District 17 needs fresh representation with an assertive voice to stand up for its values.
• Education: the young families I have talked with understand the quality of our education system is stymied until we introduce state-supported pre-kindergarten and optional full-day kindergarten.
• Affordable postsecondary education: I find it frustrating to hear stories of people who cannot enter or who have stopped attending college simply because of Idaho’s inadequate funding of its colleges and universities. We must stop squandering Idaho’s intellectual potential.
There is a lot of interest in building a new strong Team 17 — a team working aggressively for the district and for Idaho. As a legislator I will be a valuable asset and look forward to working with and serving my neighbors in our community.
Please, vote Greg Nielson on May 15 to help give District 17 a stronger, assertive voice in the state Legislature. Thank you.
