Rousing Sermon draws No. 7 post position for Kentucky Derby

Rousing Sermon drew a favorable post position Wednesday. The horse will start in the No. 7 gate position in the 20-horse field for the Kentucky Derby. No. 1 is closest to the rail and No. 20 is the widest starting spot.

"We'd like to be some place in the middle," owner Larry Williams said before the draw. "The place you don't want to be is on either end."

William said he would prefer to be between 6 and 14 in the gate.

"It won't kill us no matter where we are because he is going to be running from the rear," Williams said, noting Rousing Sermon's come-from-behind style.

Rousing Sermon opened betting with 50-to-1 odds.

Lezcano to ride Rousing Sermon

Jockey Jose Lezcano will ride Rousing Sermon in Saturday's Kentucky Derby, said Dan Kiser, the horse manager at Parma's Tree Top Ranches where Rousing Sermon was raised.

Lezcano, 27, has won two Breeders' Cup races. He has never won a Triple Crown race. He was second in the 2010 Kentucky Derby on Ice Box.

Kiser said Rousing Sermon had "a great workout" Tuesday. Rousing Sermon did not work out on the race track Wednesday.

Kiser said the horse will jog Thursday and gallop on Friday at the track. Rousing Sermon will also be schooled in the gate and paddock in preparation for the biggest race of his life.

Rousing Sermon is owned by Treasure Valley businessman Larry Williams and his wife, Marianne.

"He's happy and content and he travels like a champ," Kiser said.

Rousing Sermon flew from California to Kentucky over the weekend.

Starting gate positions for the Derby will be drawn Wednesday afternoon.
