Former Boise State defensive end Shea McClellin will be one of 26 prospects attending the NFL Draft in New York City, the league announced Thursday.
McClellin, who had planned to spend draft day with his family, was contacted Wednesday. He’s from Marsing.
His grandparents, who raised him, an uncle and his girlfriend will accompany him to New York.
“I thought it would be a good experience for them,” McClellin said. “I’m not going in there with expectations, so I think it will be a fun experience. … I never even thought about going to New York. I never thought I’d get invited.”
The draft begins with the first round at 6 p.m. April 26. The second and third rounds are April 27, beginning at 5 p.m. The last four rounds are April 28, beginning at 10 a.m.
McClellin has been climbing draft boards throughout the offseason and is considered a possible first-round pick. His invitation seems to confirm that possibility.
“I kind of try to steer away from what other people are saying because it’s only one person’s opinion,” he said. “… I’m not going in there with high expectations to begin with. I think that will help out. I’m not expecting myself to get picked in the first round.”
McClellin has his fourth visit to an NFL team lined up for Friday. He has at least two more planned. One team has worked him out in Boise and another is planned. He said he’s not supposed to identify the teams.
“It’s been fun, really,” he said. “Just living day by day, just trying to take it one day at a time, just trying to have fun with the experience.”
