Idaho's Rep. Labrador says Romney should discuss how LDS faith shaped him, but not stray into theology

First District GOP Rep. Raul Labrador told a national TV audience Sunday that likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney shouldn't attempt to mediate concerns about Mormon theology.

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday as part of a panel on religion and politics, Labrador suggested Romney talk about his work as a missionary and as a bishop and stake president. Moderator David Gregory asked Labrador, who also is LDS, whether Romney should squarely address "discomfort" with theological concerns. Some evangelicals question Mormonism, even labeling it a cult.

Said Labrador: "Well, he should talk about who he is and what formed him. And I think he discusses missionary work. I was a missionary for two years in South America. My son-- my oldest son is now a missionary in South America. It's one of the most formative things that you can do in your life.

"It informs who you are for the rest of your life. I think he could talk about that. He could relate to the people that he has taught as a bishop. He was a bishop and a stake president in the church which means that he actually dealt with a lot of different issues dealing with poverty and other issues. He should talk about that a little bit more. But...I mean, you shouldn't be getting into the theology because every church has a different dogma, a different teaching. And... we shouldn't be judging. Our constitution tells us that we shouldn't be having religious tests."

Labrador made his third appearance on the show Easter Sunday.

He also critiqued the Obama administration for its controversial contraception rule, saying, "There is an attack on religious freedom at this point."

Labrador also blasted MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell for "just saying some really nasty things about the Mormon religion...that it was based on some guy just waking up some morning and deciding that he wanted, that he had and extramarital affair and that's how the religion was founded."

Bottom line

Look, the bottom line is that everybody has their own values and beliefs....whether it is shaped by their religion, what their mommy and daddy taught them, or what their college philosophy teacher taught them. Romney's religion shapes his system of values and morals...just the same way that Obama has had influences that shape him. If you don't like what they believe then don't vote for them. We are all entitled to our opinions of certain people and/or religions, even if they may be misguided. So do your duty and don't vote for Romney, if he's such a bad guy. I know I'll do my duty and not vote for Obama.

Why Bring in Obama?

He wasn't part of the topic was he? Little ulterior motive to distract?

I think someone should ask about Kobol since BYU has a song out there about it.

Brcause he's too cool to ignore.

Mormons Know How To Save

Jews killed in the Holocaust. They baptize them! Even after requested to not do that by...Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. Let Mr. Romney 'splain that.

Why do you paint with such a broad brush?

Just this last Sunday we heard a letter from the leaders of the church in SLC admonishing members to NOT baptize Jewish Holocaust victims. They should focus on doing such work for their own relatives.

Performing such work on Anne Frank, Michael Jackson, Ty Cobb, JFK, or other celebrities/notable historical figures is never ok and the church does not condone it.

What a few rogue members may have done in the past should not bring your smug condemnation upon the entire group.

Grow up already. You don't believe in it. Great. Made your point. Move along.

Why people incessantly attack is beyond me. I guess it makes you feel better about yourself to belittle others.

What a way to live.

Making Romney explain why

Making Romney explain why members of his faith violated his faith's rules makes as much sense as making Santorum explain the behaviors of Roman Catholic priests abusing children.

The fact of the matter is that, in both of those situations, the offending parties are violating the rules of their faith.

There will always be rule breakers in any organization. Nobody is perfect.

What's so strange about Mormonism?

What are these controversial Mormon beliefs everyone is talking about? That they believe the Earth was created in a week? That they believe Christ walked the Earth and raised the dead and healed the sick? That God once killed everyone in a flood and turned someone into a pillar of salt? Oh wait, that's the wacky stuff those Evangelicals believe. I am a Christian through and through but there is nothing in the Book of Mormon that is any less outlandish than anything else in the Bible. Funny how Evangelicals are now fretting about the influence of religion in government. Their beliefs on moral issues are identical to the Mormons anyway.

This Guy is CLUELESS!!!!!!!

This idiot has no idea what he is talking about!!!!!!!!!! Ignore this LOSER!

The Senate Majority leader

The Senate Majority leader is Democrat and Mormon. Wonder if the libs have a problem with that...or if the LDS church has influenced his voting record?

Oh don't go off

spouting inconvenient facts for the haters. They'll have a spontaneous aneurism and grasp at something else to make themselves feel better about their lot in life.

Bigotry,

The "religion" of practicing Obamunists and Marxist Tap Dancing Clowns. Go Gaia!

No, Go Daddy.
