Melba High standout named Gatorade boys basketball player of year

Senior Joey Nebeker of Melba High was recognized as the 2011-12 Gatorade Idaho Boys Basketball Player of the Year on Thursday. He is the first Gatorade Idaho Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Melba.

The 6-foot-7, 200-pound senior forward averaged 22.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.0 steals, 2.7 blocks and 2.5 assists per game for the Mustangs (16-6) and was named the 2A Western Idaho Conference co-Player of the Year. Last season, Nebeker led the Mustangs to the 2A state championship.

“Joey Nebeker has been the most impressive player in our district for the past few seasons,” Nampa Christian coach Drew Hellwege said in a press release. “Even this season when our league was packed full of very good talent, he really stood out. As all good defensive big men do, he didn’t block every shot but he made other players think he was going to.”

Nebeker has signed a letter of intent to play basketball on an athletic scholarship at Boise State beginning this fall.

Great read Rachel

You are getting to be my favorite writer and someone needs to give Murph or Chadd an "offer they can't refuse." Then a spot will open for you to handle Bronco Football? Smarter, better looking, really good writer, sounds like a win/win for me : )

Thank you!

That is awfully nice of you to say.
