Varsity Extra: Live from Day Two of the 5A state tournament in girls basketball

The Idaho Statesman will provide quarter-by-quarter updates from Friday's 5A state semifinals in girls basketball. Lewiston vs. Highland is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. at the Idaho Center in Nampa, while Coeur d'Alene vs. Centennial is at 8 p.m.

Here are some highlights from Friday's loser-out games:

EAGLE 58, VALLIVUE 42

Eagle outscored Vallivue in all four quarters to move into the consolation championship Saturday against District Three rival Meridian. Junior McClain Williams was the only Mustang to score in double figures, contributing 22 points with five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Nine Mustangs in all managed to score. Junior Gabby Barker paced the Falcons for the second consecutive day with 15 points, and senior guard Gigi Rodriguez chipped in with 13 points. Vallivue, which won the 5A District Three championship last week, finishes the season 16-9.

MERIDIAN 59, ROCKY MOUNTAIN 43

Rocky Mountain led 38-35 heading into the fourth quarter, but Meridian rallied with 24 points in the fourth quarter to eliminate the Grizzlies. Three Warriors scored in double figures, led by junior guard Holly Blades with 23 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots. Senior Adrianna Lutu added 13 points and junior Mykaela Richards had 10. Rocky Mountain's high scorers were freshman Maya Rodgers and sophomore Carson Pickett with 10 points apiece. Meridian and Eagle play at 10 a.m. Saturday at Skyview High in Nampa for the consolation championship.

LEWISTON 43, HIGHLAND 35

First Quarter: Lewiston 11, Highland 7

Lewiston is playing with some defensive fire. The Bengals got out to a 7-0 lead before the Rams crawled back into the game. Lewiston scored the final four points of the quarter to take the early lead. Four players have scored for the Bengals led by Karlee Wilson with four.

Second Quarter: Lewiston 20, Highland 16

The Bengals have done a good job of taking care of the ball while limiting the Rams to a single shot on offense. Junior guard Karlee Wilson continues to lead Lewiston in scoring with six points. Dylan Gonzalez is the top scorer for the Rams with seven. Lewiston has outrebounded Highland 17-6.

Third Quarter: Lewiston 31, Highland 22

Lewiston held Highland without a field goal until the 3:32 mark. Tisha Phillips accounted for six of the Bengals' 11 points in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Lewiston 43, Highland 35

Highland attempted a comeback with about 1 minute to play when Dylan Gonzalez hit a 3-pointer and her sister, Dakota, then assisted on a layup by Megan Reed to pull within 40-35 with 55 seconds to go. The rally proved too little too late, however, as the Bengals put it away at the free-throw line. Tisha Phillips led Lewiston with 18 points. Dylan Gonzalez paced Highland with 19 points.

CENTENNIAL 58, COEUR D'ALENE 56

First Quarter: Coeur d'Alene 16, Centennial 16

Both teams traded baskets throughout the quarter as the two styles of play clashed. The Vikings tried to push the ball upcourt, while the Patriots tried to slow the pace. Neither team was entirely successful. It appears this is going to be a high-scoring game.

Second Quarter: Coeur d'Alene 28, Centennial 28

Coeur d'Alene has made it a habit of out-running its opponents, but the Patriots aren't allowing that to happen. Centennial has consistently hit its shots, making it hard for the Vikings to fast break. Centennial senior Sierrna Short is the game's top scorer with 14 points.

Third Quarter: Coeur d'Alene 43, Centennial 43

Short has come on strong for the Patriots, scoring eight more points. Should be a crazy fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Centennial 58, Coeur d'Alene 56

It is 56-55 Lewiston with 49.6 seconds to play. What a game! Centennial's Sierrna Short hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds to play to give the Patriots their first win over the Vikings since 2006.
