Beyond Whitney: Listening to isolated vocal tracks

Within hours of Whitney Houston's death, links started popping up featuring an isolated vocal track of her singing "How Will I Know." It's a gorgeous listen, showcasing her natural ability and technical prowess without the distraction of instrumentation fighting for your ear space.

Isolated tracks fascinate me. They provide a raw, unfiltered perspective of a musician, whether they are ...

Truly gifted:

Crazy from the heat:
(This is my all-time favorite isolated vocal. Where did he come UP with this stuff?)

The King of Pop (and accompanied by a drum track):

'80s hair-band fodder:

A classic of the '90s:

Multi-tracked for creepiness:

Shrieked with tons of reverb:

Or even an underappreciated replacement guitarist named Jake:

Since some of them have a pre-echo,,,

I would figure the main tracks are phased and processed and the instrumentals moved ahead and discarded after analysis and more processing. An algorithm that sampled and buffered could accomplish this with the guidance of the operator.

Jake E Lee

Jakes' Bark at the Moon riff and solo ... among the all time metal greats.

Find Chilliwack's My Girl on You Tube

You don't need to isolate that and it too will have you shaking your head and grinning a ton.

One incredible song and band fron the 80s.
