An Idaho hunter illegally shot the sibling of the Oregon wolf that walked all the way to California and captured the hearts of millions worldwide.
The hunter, who Idaho Fish and Game Department officials would not identify, shot the wolf Feb 2 between Emmett and Banks. He brought it in to show to Fish and Game officials and they noticed it had a 2011 tag on it.
He told officer he hunted with the tag because the vendor said it was still good until the end of the wolf season in March. Actually hunters need to get a 2012 tag.
But the officer let the hunter off with a warning after checking out his story, said Mike Keckler, Fish and Game communications chief. All he would have had to do was buy a new tag when he brought the wolf in, though it would be illegal.
“He could have done that and we’d have never known,” Keckler said to justify the officer’s decision.
The male wolf came from the Imnaha Pack that was formed by wolves that migrated from Idaho in 2007. The most famous, named Journey, by a Mountain Home girl in a contest, has been the subject of dozens of stories as it walked across Oregon and eventually into California.
“In California and around the world, the story of Journey continues to be celebrated as a conservation triumph and a demonstration of how far we've come since a government-sponsored campaign of extermination eliminated wolves from the west,” said Rob Klavin, of the group Oregon Wild that sponsored the contest.

So far hunters in Idaho have killed 290 wolves this season.

F&W took out the pack just east of us a couple years ago for depridation but didn't get them all. What was left splintered and formed new packs, one north and the other east of here. Neighbor saw 2 of them about a 1/4 mile south of my place a week ago. Got almost 1/2 mile of flat ground in the lower pasture and Ima thinkin we could have a lotta fun flyin and shootin. To bad we're so far apart.

should anyone worry about the rules? The freak-left lied when they were introduced. They agreed to a certain number of breeding pairs and the went back on the agreement once the goal was reached. Maybe you don't remember or are too young, but it was Idaho's senator McClure who could see wolves coming into Idaho from across the border. In about 1990 he started to talk about reintroducing wolves with less protection than the endangered species act would give before the already protected wolves made it to Idaho from NW Montana. It is his fault (or credit) that it happened.

Nice to the the F & G boys using some common sense in regards to the hunters tag screw up. The guy should still know the rules, but if a vendor misinformed him, chalk it up to it won't happen again. He did come forward and faced the music. As for the wolf...lots safer in California...should gone with bro.

IDFG knows there really shouldn't be tags involved anyway, get over it. They also Let Ms. Stone off with a warning when she illegally attempted to use her tag on a USFWS killed wolf in an attempt to have it counted in the official number when we had quotas. Didn't see you wolfaboos whining about that one.

I read in the news that Ms. Stone put her tag on a wolf that FWS took out for livestock depredation intending it to count against the hunting quota. The F&G even gave her a new tag.

I would be happy to compare my intelligence to yours any day and with great confidence. Also, you could use a lesson in manners. Have you really done the research on the actual impact or are you just spouting off because it supports your attitudes? F & G and Wildlife Management have told me that the impact is small and that they are perfectly capable of knowing when and how to cull. No, I often don't relish the way the balance of nature works, but man has really interfered with the natural order of things. If you read these postings, you will see that many here actually DO kill for fun and also use ATVs, laser sights and herding deer towards their fellow idiots with guns. Hunting is fine when done by responsible people with some ethics and morals. This whole wolf controversy has become absurd! If you raise livestock out where there are predators, you're going to lose some! That is not rocket science! Wild animals do kill and eat other wild animals. Scarier? You 'ain't seen nothing bucko!

Wolf Kill
We shouldn't need a tag to shoot a wolf. There should just be a report of a kill to keep the feds and fools happy.
