MOBILE, Ala. — Here are some Boise State highlights from the Wednesday morning Senior Bowl practice by the North team, in full pads:

Kellen Moore: He didn’t throw to wide receivers nearly as much as Tuesday. His 1-on-1 session was with the running backs and tight ends. In 7-on-7, he was 2-for-3. The first pass was a smart check-down throw to Doug Martin, who made a big gain. On the incompletion, it appeared the receiver stopped when Moore expected him to keep running. Chemistry between quarterbacks and receivers is an obvious issue this week. In team, Moore was 2-for-3. His two completions came on rollouts, and the second one was a nicely timed out route about 15 yards downfield, the type of throw some question whether he can make. The incompletion was on a throw downfield. It sailed over the receiver’s head, which has been an issue for Moore all week on vertical routes. It seems like he’s expecting the receivers to be quicker out of their breaks than they are.

Doug Martin: Martin looks like one of the best players on the field at all times. In every drill, he shines. He made three catches in the 1-on-1 passing drills, including two against Shea McClellin. Two of the catches were down the sideline. He also broke a long run in the team session. “That’s exactly what I want to show these guys, my versatility as a back,” Martin said.

Shea McClellin: He’s playing inside linebacker this week, and he says that’s partly by his choice. The Vikings offered to let him play more end/outside linebacker, but he likes getting exposed to inside linebacker and having scouts see him play there. He’s working with former Bears star and San Franciscco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary, which helps. At the beginning of practice, Singletary coached McClellin through an agility drill. “You’re getting better today! You’re getting better today!” he told McClellin. “I had a lot of tape at D-end, I had a lot of tape at outside backer,” McClellin said. “I think it’s good for me to showcase my inside-backer skills.”

Billy Winn: He got his helmet knocked off on the first play of run-game practice, but he still got penetration. It’s a difficult position for me to evaluate but a couple of NFL Draft websites reported that they were impressed with Winn after an unimpressive showing Tuesday. As a reader noted below, here's what ESPN's Todd McShay tweeted about Winn today: "DT Billy Winn stood out on Wed. Best day yet and better than much of '11 tape I've seen.Quick hands.Owned Wis OG Zeitler on a couple 1on1's."

George Iloka: He never had a chance to make a play on the ball Wednesday, but he continues to stand out with his range and athleticism. Vikings defensive backs coach Joe Woods said he’s emphasizing some of the techniques that will help Iloka combat the challenges of his height (6-foot-3). “When you’re a tall guy, you have to learn leverage, balance. You have to learn how to bend, learn how to transition, learn how to open your hips,” Woods said. “When you’re a big body and you have length and you can cover grass, it’s a definite advantage for us.” Charles Davis of the NFL Network said Iloka’s combination of size and speed will make him valuable to defenses trying to combat mismatches created by quick slot receivers and big-bodied tight ends. “I know he played corner down the stretch (this past season),” Davis said. “He fits what I’m talking about if he can truly cover those guys.”

The following are some notes that didn’t make today’s paper. Today’s stories are available here and here.

Florida running back Chris Rainey, asked about the power of the South’s defensive line, forecast doom for the North.

“That’s a big line,” he said. “There are some great guys. I’m glad to be part of this. I just know it’s going to be a blowout this Saturday.”

•••

Boise State’s Kellen Moore and the North quarterbacks struggled with snaps Tuesday. And there’s an easy explanation — center attrition.

The North has lost two centers to injuries. That leaves Ohio State center Michael Brewster, a four-year starter, and Wisconsin’s Kevin Zeitler, an All-American guard, snapping the ball.

The North added Rishaw Johnson of California University in Pennsylvania on Tuesday night. The Ole Miss transfer is a guard.

“The bottom line is we’ve got to get them no matter what,” Moore said of the snaps. “We’ll continue to work through this.”

Only two of the six Football Bowl Subdivision schools in the Northwest are represented at the Senior Bowl, but they have a combined eight players. The other three are from Washington — running back Chris Polk, defensive lineman Alameda Ta’amu and offensive lineman Senio Kelemete.

The only other Mountain West player is San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley, who was added when Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill withdrew with an injury. WAC participants include linebackers Bobby Wagner (Utah State) and James-Michael Johnson (Nevada) and running back Lennon Creer (Louisiana Tech).

The South team is loaded with Southeastern Conference players. The league contributed 22 prospects, and the rest of the roster features stars from talent-rich schools like Texas, Oklahoma State, Florida State and North Carolina.

Only two of the Heisman Top 10 are here — Moore (eighth) and Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson (ninth). The only other senior in the top 10 was Houston quarterback Case Keenum (seventh).

Among the consensus All-Americans at the game are kicker Randy Bullock (Texas A&M), wide receiver/return specialist Joe Adams (Arkansas) and defensive lineman Melvin Ingram (South Carolina), all of whom play for the South.

SEC...blah....blah...blah...

I hope Kellen and Co., shove the ball down the SEC's throat on Saturday.

I am so sick of the SEC

I grew up in the south and was a big SEC fan for years (after they finally integrated anyway), but I am developing are real dislike of their arrogance. Ask the folks who went to see the GA game about "southern hospitality."

with respect to the SEC

Six in a row - what else is there to say?

Actually

The SEC hasn't won a thing. A team from the SEC has won the NC, but a team from the SEC has also finished 2-10 every year.

What else?

It's not surprising when the BCS has stacked every card in the deck in their favor. If they are so dominant, then they should be eager to prove it in a playoff.

That's easy to do

when you conference is automatically given one of the two spots, regardless of their on-field performance. How else do you explain 2-loss LSU going several years ago?

Besides, this last NC game doesn't count since the SEC had both spots. If you push the "games games in a row", the rest of us can also push the "SEC has a 1-game losing streak in the BCS NC game".

The SEX's reign will end once a playoff starts. Then, they will meet true competition, and not the overranked, overrated teams that stack their records against bottom-feeders and FCS teams.

That is a really funny comment...

Especially since it is in a Boise paper.

Funny or not

it is a fact that all college football fans (except the SEC) aknowledge. The SEC has 2 great teams, 1-2 good teams, and the rest are average or mediocre. Everyone talks about how tough the SEC schedule is week-in and week-out. With the exception of LSU, all the SEC teams played an average schedule.

Playing ranked teams doesn't mean jack if the SEC is given their rankings without earning them. Put it this way: If 6 of the 8 teams in the MWC were given a ranking, does that mean Boise State's schedule of 5 ranked teams is one of the toughest in the nation? No, it doesn't. But, that is the argument about the SEC. How many of last season's "ranked" SEC teams ended up average or mediocre? Florida, Auburn, Mississippi State to name just a few. Then SEC fans boast about beating teams like Texas A&M, who was ranked early. Um, the Aggies ended 6-6. Why should they boast a tough schedule against teams like that?

For the longest time this season, until like the last 2 games, Boise State had a tougher strength of schedule than all but 2 SEC teams, all of the Pac-12, all of the ACC, and all of the Big East. The SEC's "tough" schedules is a joke compared to those of Big 12 teams.

So, whether you find my post funny or not, it is still true. And the SEC isn't as good as everyone thinks. Why do you think Oklahoma State was denied the NC game? I guess that's one way of ensuring a "6th NC in a row". Talk about stacking the deck!

Amen brother. A few years

Amen brother. A few years ago when Florida won the "NC" they played 4 fcs teams and then some team like troy or something. And all those at home as well so as to not take any chances.

Maybe you should check your source!

http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/schedule/_/id/57/year/2008/florida-gators

According to ESPN, they won the NC in the 2008 season.
They had ONE FCS team on their schedule, while playing SIX ranked teams!
In fact, they beat the #4, 6, 25, 20, #1 and #1 teams in the nation to get there.

For comparison, BSU had the following schedule that year:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/schedule/_/id/68/year/2008/boise-state-broncos

BSU played such powerhouse teams as:
Idaho State
Bowling Green
La Tech
Southern Miss
New Mexico State
Utah State
Idaho

"Six in a row" is the result of favorable computer rankings

and the 6th one was SEC vs SEC which not only guaranteed another SEC champion but kept ALL the NC/BCS money within the conference. Sure would have been nice to see OK State put a hurt'n on Bama the same way Utah did a few years back in the Sugar, but they weren't given a chance.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't FCS Georgia Southern score more points on that "tough" Bama D than anyone in the SEC or for that matter, anyone Bama played?

after the game

they should have a spelling contest...see how the SEC boys do in that.

I know the SEC is the big dog of football, but I couldn't resist.

The only thing the SEC has won

Is a Faux National Championship. Until there is a real playoff involving at least 8 teams that is all it will ever be.

Next year -

Next year it will be seven in a row.

Mac-maners

I don't think that the SEC will do it again; they have to play new teams and even if they are bottom feeders from other confenances I think they'll show the SEC some suprises and end up with more wins than most think.
By the way if the SEC ever went to play a game up the north in November or December they'd fall apart due to the lack of 70 degree weather, most of those fat boys can't even begin to move when it's 10 degree's and the snow if falling.

Sort of like the time...

Sort of like the time bsu went to play between the hedges in the heat and humidity?

If the SEC is so good

then why do they refuse to play USC anymore? Is is because Auburn and Arkansas went 0-4 and were outscored by an average of 41-12 the last four times they played? Nah, I'm sure that had nothing to do with it.

great article

That pic of Brady is hilarious!

SMACK DOWN

I hope the dude from FLORIDA is chosen to run back a kick-off...and gets and introduction to DOUG MARTIN. Better yet...perhaps he just rides the pine and dreams of playing in the Senior Bowl.

Enjoy the Ride...there is no return ticket.

Statesman just report :

Billy Winn

ESPN's Todd McShay on BSU's Billy Winn:

"DT Billy Winn stood out on Wed. Best day yet and better than much of '11 tape I've seen.Quick hands.Owned Wis OG Zeitler on a couple 1on1's"

Doug Martin

Right now ESPN has D-Mart ranked as the 8th best back in the draft. I'm confident after the Sr. Bowl and combine, ESPN will put him in the top 4 or 5 like most other ana-lysts. Wouldn't surprise me to see him break the bench press record for RB's at the combine.

I wouldn't be surprised

I think it was B43S42U that posted a while back that Martin was able to out-press ALL of the Georgia defensive line.

Rotoworld) After watching

Rotoworld) After watching Kellen Moore practice for two days at the Senior Bowl, The Sideline View's Adam Caplan compares the former Boise State star to Tyler Palko. Analysis: It's not a good thing. According to Caplan, Moore's arm strength is "less than ideal," and he struggles putting any mustard on downfield throws further than 20 yards. SI.com draft analyst Tony Pauline recently stated that Moore has the least velocity of any quarterback in Mobile. At under 6-foot and 191 with a noodle arm, Moore may be lucky to be drafted at all this April.

oh no!

It's the end of the world.

well, if joke doc say so

i guess km may as well give it up now.
