In search of goofy ducks

Image I can't describe them any other way. It's not a bad description, just a lovable description.

Goofy ducks. I like goofy ducks and this is the time of the year to see them. They like hanging around the open waters of the Boise and Snake rivers fishing in the open water.

That's what draws them to the area - the open water.

To me, some of the goofy ducks are the hooded mergansers, common mergansers, goldeneyes and buffleheads. They scooter around on the water, fly like crazy and are very skittish. But, they are fun to watch.

I saw a bunch of them on the Snake River below C.J. Strike Reservoir Sunday. Last week I took some photos along the Boise River for my Scene Family story coming Friday in the Idaho Statesman on several walks where you can spot goofy ducks.

One of my favorites is the hooded merganser - photo by Pete Zimowsky/Idaho Statesman

Nice Duck shot

That one qualifies as a "goofy duck" for sure. We had a pair of Common Mergansers up here last year.

By the way...

"They scooter around..."

Still amazed

How they show up in winter and then disappear to breeding grounds elsewhere. The fish ducks, as we used to call them, seem to like high country streams and rivers.
