Bishop Kelly High senior Emily Nist was recognized as the 2011-12 Gatorade Idaho Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year on Thursday.

The 5-foot-6 senior won her third individual 4A state championship last fall in a time of 18 minutes, 34.98 seconds, helping the Knights secure their third straight team championship.

Nist also finished 11th at the Foot Locker West Regional championships, crossing the line in 18:41, and qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, where she took 37th with a time of 18:35. She also placed 12th at the Nike Cross Northwest championships in 18:49.

“I have seen many examples of Emily Nist’s talent and have always been impressed by her diligence and perseverance,” Bishop Kelly head coach Tom Shanahan said in a press release. “From the outset, I worked closely with her on a day-to-day basis and I witnessed tremendous growth and development. Her teammates marvel at her work ethic, discipline, determination and courage.”

Nist has verbally committed to run cross country and track for Syracuse University beginning this fall.
