Boise State football coach Chris Petersen on Big East move: 'It's going to help the Boise brand'

LAS VEGAS — Boise State football coach Chris Petersen said the Broncos’ move to the Big East in 2013 will create better exposure for his program — both on TV and in stadiums in parts of the country where they haven’t played.

“It’s going to help the Boise brand,” he said at the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.

As he did throughout the process, Petersen said he trusted President Bob Kustra and Interim Athletic Director Curt Apsey to make the right decision for the future. The Broncos will compete in the Big East in football and the WAC in most other sports.

“Those guys did hours and hours and days and days of homework and we trust those guys tremendously,” Petersen said. “We think in the big picture, in the long run, this is going to be a good move for us.

“We’re kind of that unique program anyway that we’ve got these unique pockets (of fans) all over the country and so now we’re going to take our team there. That’s something. I think the TV situation is going to be much different than we’re in now.”

Petersen said the travel in the Big East won’t be a significant issue. The Broncos will play at San Diego State every other year, likely at Houston or SMU every year, likely at Cincinnati or Louisville every year and at one or two true Eastern teams.

“It will be a little bit of an inconvenience, but there’s always an inconvenience somehow, some way, with whoever you play,” he said.

When Boise State senior wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker made his school-record 15th touchdown catch of the season in the regular-season finale against New Mexico at Bronco Stadium, a debate ensued with the nearest official.

Shoemaker went to the official and told him he was going to keep the ball, a moment captured in the attached photo.

Tyler Shoemaker lobbies an official to keep the ball from his record-setting touchdown catch.

“He was trying to snag it from me,” Shoemaker said. “I said, ‘Hey, man, I’m keeping this.’ He said, ‘Hey, man, give it here.’ I said, ‘This is a record ball,’ and he said, ‘Oh, OK.’ ”

The ball was presented to Shoemaker as an award at the team banquet. Quarterback Kellen Moore also broke a school record on that play, throwing his 40th TD pass of the season. Moore broke his own record.

“It was perfect that we both got to break a record on the same play,” Shoemaker said.

Here is the feature I wrote on Shoemaker for today’s paper.

A few leftover notes from my reporting:

— Shoemaker never has forgotten his suspension for the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl for violating a team rule. It was a painful moment for a player who otherwise has a clean reputation in the program, having graduated early and become a leader. How often does he think about that mistake? “Every day. Every day. Some of the worst times in your life are what define you. That’s how you respond and bounce back from those. That day, especially that trip, rings home just because looking at where I am today, that pushed me to get through that thing and to prove myself all over again.”

— Austin Pettis said he expects Shoemaker to play in the NFL: “He’s more than capable. Obviously coming in as a rookie you have to be big on special teams. That will help him out in the process. He would be a good fit for anybody.” Offensive coordinator Brent Pease agrees. “He always had an impact in special teams. I think that’s going to carry him into having an opportunity later on,” Pease said.

— Pettis (now with the St. Louis Rams) and Shoemaker call each other on game days. “We hype each other up, make each other laugh,” Pettis said.

— Shoemaker spends close to 75 percent of his time in the slot, where the Broncos can find good matchups for him and take advantage of his smarts. “He did the things Austin did from a different position and in a different way,” Pease said.

•••

While I had Pettis on the phone, I asked him about his rookie season. He has 27 catches for 256 yards without a touchdown. He also averages 9.3 yards on 15 punt returns.

“Obviously we’re not having the season that we wanted,” Pettis said. “Personally, I’m getting a lot of experience with playing time. I’m trying to get the most out of that that I can. I’m trying to enjoy it. These are the dog days of the season. I’d be relaxing right now if I was in college, getting ready for a bowl game.”

On the NFL: “The biggest transition is the competition. Your biggest competition in college is your easiest day at this level. The dudes you’re going against are trying to keep and earn their spot on a daily basis. The speed of play is faster, but not as bad as you may think.”

Ohio State’s NCAA penalties will be announced at 1 p.m. MST. It will be interesting to see how those compare to Boise State’s.

Also at 1 p.m., Brian Murphy and I will be hosting a live chat.

Imagine that.....

Coach Pete trusts Bronco Bob......

There will be a couple of very disappointed Vandals.......

Could there be friction in the Vandal nation over this?

I wonder if Idaho pays for it's band out of secret donations from funds made from illegal underground beer-bong gambling.....

Oh the humanity of it all!

Jimmy....

Let me give you a little advice...

If you are a Bronco fan who graduated in 94', which I doubt but whatever, I would abandon your present username and switch to something else. You lose all credibility when you say you didnt say something you actually said (and is easy to find)...and then get huffy about it and call the rest of us 'homers'' who live in a dream world and are not realists. You might be a good dude just trying to keep us "homers" in check. MIGHT. Rest assured you are not the first. And wont be the last.

I mean take a look at FO for instance. I cant figure out if hes trying to keep us in check, himself in check, or the monkey he keeps in check.

I guess...

I typed what I typed. I guess I did state he will leave. Not really what I meant, but it is what it is. I hope he does not. He is an awesome coach and great person. I was trying to say (gulp) that I don't think Patti will come here if Petersen does go.
There is a reason that some people really despise the Broncos, and they say it is because of the actions of the bandwagon fans. And after seeing some of their comments around and actions in person, I can agree on some of it.
I will also say, I took some serious shizz when I was at BSU from all the Vandals. They were everywhere and always talking. Some of the newer fans of the Broncos seem to be this way. Price of expanding your fanbase I guess.
BTW, Business Management, class of 94. Wife, Education class of 96. BAA members and tix are sect 110, row A, seats 9-10. Will be there again next year. Parking space is getting plowed and have no idea yet where they will put us.

-Just another Bronco fan who is human and a screws up sometimes.

I can dig that

.....

Props Jimmy

Sounds good man. Cant wait to say hi.

Ω Very well done

One more piece of advice. Don't get sucked in by a couple of posters here who proclaim to be big Bronco supporters and are running around with trumpets and drums haranguing others to join the BAA and donate money to stadium expansion. They are unabashed Vandals in (what they claim) Bronco gear.

Nothing against the BAA and donations ... it's the tone, drone, and offensive persistence that doesn't sit well. By identifying yourself and your wife as BAA members, they are likely to laud you while denigrating others. I am not a BAA member, nor a native Bronco. However, I do support the team and, for all anyone knows, have contributed in other ways beyond the BAA and away from public information.

The two characters who just replied to your post (B43S42U and JL) know me and can vouch for what I've offered here. They are solid Broncos.

Don't worry about the words. Your intent has come through clearly. Cool.

BBM #24

Cool....

So Weisturd is not a Bronco fan? j/k

Ω It's a long story

Got a minute?

razor - you should be a BAA Member - why not - it is not hard?

I know that due to circ@mstances beyond your control, you have been self-precluded in the past from joining the BAA. However - GREAT NEWS - it is a New Day and a New Way - and you again continue to qualify for BAA Membership. Possibly, you just don't know about the BAA. Let me take a moment and educate you about the BAA:

About the BAA

The Bronco Athletic Association (BAA) was established in 1968 to promote and advance Bronco Athletics. It is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The activities of the Athletic Association are conducted in the name of the University with the approval of University management.

A board of forty directors who serve one to three year terms manage the affairs of the Athletic Association. Board meetings are scheduled bi-monthly on the third Tuesday at noon in the Allen Noble Hall of Fame Gallery. A president, vice president, secretary, budget/treasurer, and endowment chair are elected annually by the directors as officers of the Athletic Association. A full-time executive director and a staff of four other professionals conduct the day-to-day affairs from an office located in the Allen Noble Hall of Fame Gallery. Four office staff members are classified as full-time State of Idaho employees. The Executive Director also serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Development.

The Athletic Association raises financial support for Bronco Athletics primarily through five programs. These programs help finance current as well as future scholarships, enhance sports budgets, build facilities and provide for other financial needs. Information on these programs is available on this site under programs and gifting opportunities.

Now after reading the above education material I provided for your reading edification - how can you logically not join the BAA, yet continue to claim your undying loyalty to the Bsu Broncos. I understnad you sent two daughters thru BSU in the past and their tuition was quite expensive - over one hundred thousand dollars, is what I remember you saying.

That is a lot of money - but - that is not the same thing as spending $75.00 to join the BAA. Just spending tuition for BSU does not qualify you as having specificaly supported the Bronco Football Team.

Please join us in our effort to get as many people who call themselves Bronco Fans to actually join the BAA and prove that they really are Bronco Fans, through their demoonstrated contribution of money instead of just providing 'lip service'. I am sure you want to be remembered as a man who 'put his money where his mouth was'.

Again, thank you for your interest in requesting more information about the BAA and how you can best serve the Bronco Football Program.

Here is a link with easy to follow and very simple instructions about how to join the BAA:

https://baamember.nolatepayments.com/

Hopefully, one day you will be able to sign-off with your very own personalized BAA Membership Number.

Go 2012 Broncos.

JLandon - here is a little advice for you

to pass on to 'razor', if you want to.

Razor, as a typical Common Bronco Fan who does not belong to the BAA as a Member In Good Standing or HAS Ever At All (unlike yourself who is a Real Bronco Fan member of the BAA - a High Ranker at almost the Director Level, I am told). Razor might consider joining the BAA and becoming a member.

If he did, he would be able to have parking priveleges, maybe?

Here is a map of the parking benefits for BAA Members:

http://transportation.boisestate.edu/images/CampusPARKINGMAP_2011_2.pdf

I know it is kinda small letters and print, but if you take your gla$sess off and look thru the lenses backwards, they seem to magnify the letters and the lines and such in the picture.

Anyways, please pass this along to razor the next time you see him and see if you can get him to 'get off the pot' and spend $75.00 bucks and join the BAA. I think if a person joins the BAA in 2011 a person will get 25% off of their next purchase at the Bronco Shop. But that offer isn't any good after 1 January 2012, when it becomes a new year and is not 2011 anymore.

Go 2012 Broncos.

I agree

Monkeys are always funny.

Shoe has it right---

"Some of the worst times in your life are what define you". Dont think I need to add to that statement. Been around 69 years and he hit the nail square on the head.
Great job Shoe.

Big East is a good move

Great for recruiting playing 1 Cal, 2 Fla and 2 Tex schools. Better tv money. Tougher for fans traveling, but with planning (cheap air fare) maybe a good trip somewhere once a year for some folks. But think the games will improve home attendence when staduim is enlarged.
Few games a year with some Big East basketball teams will help the basketball attendence and exposure for that program.
I just dont see a down side other than traveling for fans. lets face it not many games close now.

Yo coach, You know what else will help the Boise brand?

a freak'n kicker!

Hi

Ugly........

Boise_Bowl_Bound - welcome

Glad you are here on these boards and are helping get out the word about how important it is for Broncos and Vandals to join the BAA and contribute money for the expansion of Bronco Stadium project.

I know you ARE NOT the Vandal poster 'named 'ugly'. Lolol, that B43S42U guy is waaaay out to lunch on this one, ROFLMAO.

However, there is an elemnent of Common Bronco Fans who are not truley supportive of the Bronco football Team or the BAA and they just pay 'lip service' to supporting the Broncos and believe that joining the BAA or contributing even ONE Dollar to the expanion of Bronco Stadium project is pure 'NONSENSE'.

Yep, they have called those things 'nonsense', many times on these boards.

Just ignore the following posters:

A. B43S42U (he is also known as 'tfunky' cuz his screen name used to be 'tfunk'),

and,

B. 'razor/horsecaller/stevelane/furryorangutang'.

There are a few others in their Pussee Possee, but they are really kinda insignificant and like little chihuahua dogs nipping at your shoe laces.

You will not get any type of support or warm welcome from any of the members of the Pussee Possee. All you will get is made fun of and berated because you are advocating that Broncos contribute money for Coach Pete's expansion of Bronco Stadium project.

As an excuse for them not to support the Bronco Football Team you will be told that most Broncos are profligate, poor and economically disadvantaged and just can't afford to give donations (but they can afford cigarettes, mullet haircuts, tatoos, bowling league fees, and the ocassional small box of JISCZ laundry soap and Downey Fabric Tissues, as Christmas or Birthday presents for their Common Law Live-ins - but never any food for the wife or kids, darned it).

Keep up the great work.

Go 2012 Broncos.

Its saying unavailable 81...funky/razor/81

What do you guys think of Norm Chow getting the Hawaii job? Its a good hire for many reasons (the Polynesian connection is huge) but the guy is 65 and this is his first head coaching job. Kinda surprised Koetter wasnt considered a finalist, unless theres something Ive missed the last few days...

Is the post about UNR selling a whopping 10 tickets to the bowl game in Hawaii? Paging Dr. Ski man....

Ω Came through okay for me

Wow, 10 whole tickets via phone sales. Maybe they're all savvy and working StubHub or some other service.

Getting airfare to Hawaii right now could be a pretty expensive proposition. I used to work over there and know how prices fluctuate. Sometimes you could find real good airfares, other times forget it.

Don't know about Chow. You'd have thought he'd have come out of UCLA much earlier with a head job. Really haven't paid much attention to the Hawaii opening.

Check your email for a question.

Ski doc?

What say ye???

What do ya'll think of Pease going to Houston?

Is he going for sure?

I know one guy who will shed a bunch of tears if he goes to Houston! Rhymes with Sid...

so who knows...

discuss the merits of supporting and condoning Petit Theft by Bronco Football Players, or anybody for that matter, or not. You might even find out that not everybody thinks it is okay for some selective college football players to do.

Here is a little information about Petit Theft:
