Bishop Kelly, Highland cross country runners qualify for nationals

Highland High's Robert Farnsworth and Bishop Kelly's Emily Nist each qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals with their performances in Saturday's 33rd annual West Regional at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Farnsworth was third in 15 minutes, 41 seconds in the boys' 5-kilometer race, while Nist was 11th in 18:41 in the girls' race. The top 10 runners advance to nationals, but Nist received a spot because the fourth-place finisher will not be able to attend nationals. The national meet is Dec. 10 at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif.

Karlie Garcia (17:46) of Roseville, Calif., and Darren Fahy (15:29) of Carlsbad, Calif., were Saturday's individual champions.

Other Idaho competitors in the girls' seeded race were Vallivue's Mikayla Malaspina (16th, 18:49), Boise's Victoria O'Neil (79th, 20:09) and Bishop Kelly's Rebecca Lassere (107th, 20:46). Also competing for the boys were Twin Falls' Erik Harris (20th, 16:16), Mountain Home's Michael Price (139th, 17:29) and Skyline's Chas Sperry (193rd, 18:21).

A thin clad victory

This is the epitome of sports. Way to go, kids. You have excelled in a high level sport which you can continue into your senile years. X-country is a fabulous sport that each individual must pursue on his/her own. No one out there on the trail to blame except oneself.

Good luck at nationals. Wish I could be there.
