For the second year in a row, the Boise State football team’s Bowl Championship Series dreams were riding on a kick Saturday afternoon at Bronco Stadium.
And for the second straight time, that kick sailed wide right.
Redshirt freshman Dan Goodale missed a 39-yard field goal on the final play of the game as the No. 5 Broncos lost 36-35 to the TCU Horned Frogs.
“Just missed opportunities,” senior quarterback Kellen Moore said of his thoughts, echoing what he said in a similar situation last year in Reno. “I don’t think it’s one play. There are a variety of plays that you look back and try to improve on those and maybe we have a little better opportunity. But they made more plays than us.”
The Horned Frogs scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:05 left in the game to take the 36-35 lead. That touchdown drive immediately followed a fumble by walk-on tailback Drew Wright when it looked like the Broncos were going to run out the clock and win 35-28.
TCU snapped Boise State’s national-best 35-game home winning streak and is the first conference opponent to win on the blue since Idaho in 1998.
“We didn’t shock the world,” TCU linebacker Tank Carder wrote on Twitter. “We just reminded them.”
Boise State falls to 8-1 and most likely will play in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas like last year or the Poinsettia Bowl. They have the first two selections from Mountain West teams.

Some game notes:
Boise State played much of Saturday’s game without its top three cornerbacks — Jerrell Gavins (out for the year), Jamar Taylor (started, but left early with nagging leg injury) and Ebo Makinde (leg injury).
True freshman Lee Hightower and sophomore Quaylon Ewing-Burton took over. Hightower got burned on one of three first-half deep balls for touchdowns — the other two were on Makinde — and Ewing-Burton twice was unable to knock down a pass at the goal line on the Horned Frogs’ decisive final drive.
Hightower did make a key interception in the fourth quarter.
“They were getting us on double moves,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. “That’s not totally just on the secondary. Everybody’s involved. We’ve got to get some pressure.”
TCU quarterback Casey Pachall threw for 473 yards, five touchdowns and a two-point conversion.
“We knew they had been banged up at corner and they play their secondary like us, they sit on routes,” TCU coach Gary Patterson said. “… We knew we weren’t going to be able to drive on that defense, so we were going to have to create some big plays.”
•••
Boise State starting tailback Doug Martin didn’t play until the final 2 minutes of the game. He was hobbled during the UNLV game and didn’t look great during warm-ups, Petersen said. He came in for the last drive because of an injury to D.J. Harper (ankle).
Defensive tackle Billy Winn, injured against UNLV, didn’t start but played. Center Thomas Byrd, who started for the first time since September against UNLV, didn’t play.
•••
Boise State redshirt freshman wide receiver Matt Miller made nine catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. That gives him 48 catches and seven touchdowns this season — both school records for freshmen.
Austin Pettis set the previous receptions mark with 46 in 2007.
•••
Boise State senior quarterback Kellen Moore was 28-of-37 for 320 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers and two sacks. His efficiency rating was 166.16, by far his best game against TCU. He hadn’t topped 111 in two previous meetings.
Moore also extended his streak to 22 straight games with at least two touchdown passes.
•••
Boise State trailed 20-14 at halftime — the Broncos’ first halftime deficit since the 2007 Hawaii Bowl loss to East Carolina.
It was the Broncos’ first halftime deficit at home since the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl loss to Boston College.
•••
Boise State senior defensive end Tyrone Crawford scored on a 32-yard fumble return on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. Linebacker Byron Hout knocked the ball loose in the backfield.
“I just got the perfect Sunday hop,” Crawford said.
True freshman wide receiver Dallas Burroughs, the record-setting track star from Rocky Mountain High, finally got his first deep ball in the fourth quarter. He made a 54-yard touchdown catch at the goal line — the first completion for the Broncos this season on a ball that traveled 40 or more yards in the air from the line of scrimmage.
“Dallas ran a great route, got under the ball and made a big play,” Moore said.

Losing can be good.
If you learn from your mistakes, admit your weaknesses and decide today to start fixing them and keep on improving. Go Boise State!

WHY ARE WE YELLING??!
He's not yelling, he's just being stupid.
And all-caps is no longer Yelling. People have abandoned the conventions of the infancy of the internet and just do what they want.
Blame it on when internet portals were opened to Usenet newsgroups and the influx killed a great number of groups, causing great loathing. The door was never closed.

Boise will continue its
Boise will continue its great winning tradition. Nobody can have a perfect game all the time. TCU was better today. Those who blame a kicker or a specific play for losing a full 60 mins. game need a brain check.
IT IS THE KICKER'S fault
Dont candy coat it, its his only job, to make field goals. He missed the field goal, down go BCS hopes, down goes recruiting, down goes the $$$, down goes Boy Z state.
It's not his fault that we
It's not his fault that we lost the game. We were losing before that kick. If you watched the game you'll see that we missed a few opportunities prior to that last kick and it was a culmination of several things that cost us the game. We fought hard and we kept up. We didn't get the "W" and that's that. We are a TEAM and we win and lose as a TEAM. That's what makes BRONCO NATION stand out above the rest. You my friend need to go back to school and learn how to spell BOISE then come back and make your point.
IT WAS......
THE KICKER! Again! What part of da TRUTH can't u HANDLE?
The only truth is that here
The only truth is that here is a 41-year old grown man who is too lazy to type out 'the' instead of 'da'.

...sounds like the PERFECT ESPN SEGUEI to the
PERFECT HAPPY FROGTAIL ENDING TO DA
GREATEST GAME of DA season!!!!!!! FROOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo
gs! (oops, DA frogvoice givin' OUT!)
The kick was a freebie
The fact remains that BSU should have never gotten the chance at a kick. The pass interference call was completely bogus. The game would have been over after the failed 4th down conversion.
I wonder....?
I wonder if the geology department had their seismograph running to see how hard the earth shook when all of the BSU fans jumped off of the bandwagon tonight?
And to think that many BSU fans were killing on Alabama for losing at home to the best team in the nation. What happens when you lose to only a decent team?
It is coming to light how BSU would likely do if they were in a much stronger conference like the Big Ten or the SEC.
BSU only plays two decent teams all year and loses one of them. The top ranked teams in the SEC will play a half dozen (or more) ranked teams this year.
BSU has had a great run as a good team with very weak schedules. Now we will have to wait to see what happens as BSU will more than likely have a down year where they could potentially lose several games. With a less than exciting schedule, it will be hard to even fill the current stadium, let alone if it is expanded.
I would not be suprised at all if Coach Petersen decides to leave after this year being that he knows the streak of success is over. He is a much more attractive coach this year than he will be when the team starts having a few regular losses.
Movin' on
Understand Penn is looking for a coach!
And to think that many BSU
And to think that many BSU fans were killing on Alabama for losing at home to the best team in the nation. What happens when you lose to only a decent team?
Well Lets See, BAMA losing to a good team drops to #3......OKlahoma losing to a BAD BAD team drops to #6
I say we stay at #5 when you lose to "only a decent team" Seem about right huh Jocstrap
I know different rules apply to Boise though
Wishful thinking JocDoc
With better conferences also come more money and more athletic players and media coverage. Also the fans become more sophisticated and savvy and learn to appreciate the losses to better teams more than winning against weaker teams. I went to school to a "big budget" school were there were top teams coming over all the time. I tell you. Boise is growing and moving fast towards the big time. My two points conversion.
BOISE IS SO OVER.
This was the begining of the end. SENIORS go bye bye and so dows Petersen.
Just
Because you really want something to happen with all your hopes doesn't mean it happens
What is with the play calling at the end of the game?
I can't believe we took the ball out of Kellen's hands with 28 seconds left and two timeouts on the 20 yard line to try a field goal with a kicker we have no confidence in. What was Coach Pete thinking? I am schocked!
We still love the Broncos!
I didn't understand that
I didn't understand that either
BSU Blows on the Blew!
BSU Blows on the Blew!
Happy day today
What a terrific game, loved every minute. Especially the tears after the game.
your joy could be short lived
not that you expect the vandals to win a game. you have a sad life, gaining joy from the sorrow of others. a true vandal. nothing to be happy for in their own lives. feast on the sorrow of others to make yourself feel better. valleyvandal=loser.
are you kidding
bsu writes the book on gaining join from the sorrow of others, are you kidding? You live for other teams to get beat so you can move up in rankings - that's the life of a bsu fan.
sure eck
give an example. which team do you support?
support vs alum
I graduated from Michigan state, go Spartans. Unlike many here who just support bsu but didn't go there. Those fans cannot talk smack to me. Every Monday when I walk into work bsu fans are just talking about which top team lost and how they will move up. Meanwhile I am just pumped about our wins.
I graduated from Oregon
I graduated from Oregon State but am a transplant to the TV, still own a house here and now live in CO. Am I not allowed to root for BSU as a "true" fan? btw I paid 200 per ticket and drove 700 miles to watch the TCU game.
well eck
that is great news. we open at michigan state next year. i hope you are still around these boards if boise state should play well enough to win that day.
Kind of pathetic
Maybe you should focus on your own team.
How are your Vandals doing
How are your Vandals doing agains BYU????? did they even show up or is it Moscow High?
Great Game (END OF AN ERA)
Chris Petersen's Boise State Broncos played their heart out.The better team won today.I believe this will be Chris Petersen's final season as the head coach.
Just
Because you wish for something doesn't mean it's true
A lot of bitter people on here
Congrats again to TCU. Heck of a game. Back and forth and was really fun to watch.
Why are Vandals and Wolf Pack fans gloating? The Broncos have lost 3 games in four years. Its not the end of anything. A one point loss to a good team is hard to swallow but this is a program built on winning and it will continue to do so. The Broncos dont need to go to a BCS bowl every year to be considered elite.
Bronco fans, be proud. Have class even if these haters dont. Dont argue and fight with these bitter guys who have no life but to come on right after a loss. It means the Broncos are just as good as we think they are.
Go Broncos!
JLandon - You dissapoint me
You seem to think all Vandals are Bronco Haters.
Apparently, you do not read all the posts of Vandals on both boards.
Here is a post from a Vandal, long (over an hour) before your post condemning Vandals for hating Broncos and 'gloatage':
--------------------------------------------------------------
JLandon - yes congrats for TCU
Submitted by aqfunk on Sat, 11/12/2011 - 6:21pm.
And, I say congrats to Coach Pete and the Broncos for giving us several wonderful years where a BCS National Championship was a possaibility and not just some 'pie-in-the-sky' hyperbole.
I have no regrets being a Vandal and supporting the Broncos. The BSU Broncos are a State of Idaho Team. An Idaho Treasure, really.
They are a team that has my full respect, admiration, and gratitude.
Yes, TCU played a great game - but BSU has played many great games and has brought quite a bit of joy and excitement into our house, these past few years.

Im just bummed
Absolutly bummed I "dissapoint" you. Thats really terrible.
I never wrote I think ''all" Vandals are haters. I said Vandals and Pack fans were gloating. They admitted as much. I WASNT SPEAKING TO YOU. I was calling for Bronco fans to lose with dignity and humility. Tip your hat to the Victors and ignore the bitter hate from trolling bums.
JL
Not all Vandals are BSU haters...
SIF
Isnt that what I said?
still hate the Broncos after all these years
broncos81, I am one of the few the proud, the nasty and inebriated. I will always ALWAYS
Hate the Broncos. All thanks to the events of one particular game in the late 70's
ValleyVandal....Ugly is a
Vandal and does not hate the Broncos....
There is no reason to....
The problem with Boise is that their success caught up to them and they tried to move it too fast....
stadium, BCS, Big East etc....their focus this year was everything but football....look at their very own articles....they were telling both mwc and big east what they wanted....acting like the BCS and big east must have boise to keep aq....now look!!!!
Just get back to football, and forget rest....
Go Vandals....
