Boise State has made a few more tweaks to football coach Chris Petersen’s five-year contract, which goes to the State Board of Education for approval Thursday.

Petersen’s automatic one-year extensions for every season in which the Broncos win eight games will include a $100,000 raise, double the previous contracted amount.

His bonus for a Bowl Championship Series berth (now $150,000) or a conference championship (now $100,000) have been increased by $25,000.
Petersen’s total compensation, including longevity bonuses and supplemental retirement contributions, will be $1.525 million this year. That amount increases by $100,000 every subsequent year, to $1.925 million in 2015. With two more wins, he will be guaranteed $2.025 in 2016.

Petersen’s buyout is $650,000.

The State Board also will review some technical changes to the contract.

sillines silliness who pays him academics

nation contact the politicians this is really absurd

Dumb comment...

It's not like they cut salaries from professors to pay the football coach. Ever heard of boosters, television & radio appearances, etc?

dumb comment

the school is not very good academically work on some standards

The school doesn't have to worry about it

Everything but the State base of $116,000.00 (or thereabouts) is from private boosters.

What's silly is someone complaining about what others do with their money. Besides, which is the better investment for the State, Chris Petersen or your Vandal's Akey?
No question which one is silly since they both get the same amount of State money.

State money

Actually, none of Petersen's pay comes from state money. It's all athletic department revenues. They changed it a couple years ago.

thank you chadd

we are bound to get the inevitable negative comments that the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Rhetorical questions

If the state subsidizes Boise State Athletics to the tune of 20% per year, and Chris Petersen is paid from the athletics budget, does he receive any state money?

If Boise State has the worst academic profile of any FBS school, and the president of Boise State spends his entire day managing the affairs of the athletic department, is Chris Petersen's salary indirectly paid by Boise State students?

There are massive costs to all of this, economic and otherwise.

rhetorical answer

As long as BSU keeps winning football games and is ranked in the top 10 nobody will care and those that do care will be outshouted by those who don't.

Don't care or care as much ore more about other factors?

BSU Football doesn't exist in a bubble...it is part of every other program, class and facet of the college. Football is as healthy as the university and vice versa.

Ditto for all of the activities, sports or not.

Costs?

kpbronco68
Boise State University is a tremendous plus for this regions economy and Chris Peterson is one of the reasons. It would be impossible to pay him what he is actually worth.

Based on your writing skills...

...it sounds like you went to school there and got kicked out.

like you?

wiseAssBerg?

Wah Wah Wah! You know what

Wah Wah Wah! You know what teachers can't do? Win football games and entertain millions. He's worth every dime. If you think that academics needs more money than donate something.

Please don't feed the troll

He might seem harmless, but if you feed him he will never leave.

I've been here 4 years and 6 days.

You told you this crap?

----------

I NEVER hate telling you I was right...I would be dead if I did. Get real.

idiotic...

people who buy tickets and t-shirts and stuff pay him. He pays for academic scholarships.

NO

Unlike your University of Idaho who steals from the academic side to fund the athletics. Boise State does not, they have always seperated the athletic money from the acedemic money. Any other difficult questions I can answer for you....like Red light means stop??

Go Broncos!!

Really?

Boise State receives more than $7.7 million in athletic subsidies per year.

$5.5 million of that subsidy is appropriated from Boise State directly, while the other $2.2 million comes from the SBOE.

If you care to talk about academics, explain why Boise State is subsidizing athletics at a time when it has the worst graduation rate among schools that sponsor FBS football.

Wrong Nimrod

BSU's graduation rate is about in the middle....before you open your trap check your facts.....BSU has a higher graduation rate than Texas A&M, UCLA, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Utah and Texas to name a few. Check for yourself http://stanford.scout.com/2/952555.html

Boise State's graduation rate is 28%

You know, the ENTIRE UNIVERSITY????

http://arbiteronline.com/2010/03/04/bsu-graduation-rates-should-cause-concern/

Again Nimrod

We are talking football....please stay with what is written in the article.

That doesn't give you the license to use uncouth language.

LOL...

This is from the Statesman...what they Statesman failed to tell you is this: The money was generated from revenue produced by BSU! From Football, Basketball, etc...which HAS to go to the STATE, because technically the STATE owns the arenas and stadiums.

So, After the State takes their CUT! BSU gets less than they actually EARNED!

THE MSN GUY WASN'T TALKOMG ABOUT BSU????????????????

PAY ATTENTION!

infiniti (biting the hand that feeds you)

Have you ever heard the term "biting the hand that feeds you"?

The federal government's title IX requirements is the reason for the majority of those "subsidies".

Here's a recap of DOE numbers for the 2009/2010 reporting period.

Women's Sports:
Revenue: $1,301,789
Expense:<$9,687,540>
Total: <$8,385,751>

Men's Sports (less football)
Revenue: $1,681,405
Expense:<$3,055,109>
Total: <$1,373,704>

Men and Women sports (less football) costs BSU: <$9,759,455>

Now, using your "subsidies" number of $7.7M, BSU still needs another $2M to cover the costs of "non" football sports.

Ever wonder where that $2M comes from?

Here ya go:
Football:
Revenue: $14,515,613
Expense: <$6,850,396>
Profit: $7,665,217

So you see where "biting the hand that feeds you" is relevant?

It can be argued that the BSU football program is helping to keep those subsidies from growing.

Hope this helps.

Another bubble

Taxpayers pay during the good times, and will pay more during the bad times when BSU starts to lose games.

If this was such a great business then why isn't it taken private? Isn't that the repub mantra? Oh, wait, need all that taxpayer provided corporate welfare...

Pete's buyout

Way to low. I would like to see a 5 million buyout clause. The schools that try to recruit can afford it and should pay through the nose to get him.

I don't think that will work, much less it's a bit silly to say.

Chris is not a deity, he's a man who coaches. He's not the only reason BSU wins like theu do and if he died tomorrow we'd still play our best for the new coach.

Coach Pete is merely a man. They tell me worshipping graven idols is fodder for being a barbequed soul.

I agree FO and speaking of bronco coaches...

In the last 67 years, the Broncos have had 11 coaches. All but two had winning records. The two who didn't were Tom Mason and Houston Nutt, who each coached a single season while the program was in transition following the death of Pokey Allen. Dirk Koetter was able to get the program back on track to it's winning ways, so even if Petersen does leave, history has shown that BSU will continue to be successful under the direction of a new coach.

Pete 2006 – ? (67-5)
Hawk 2001-2005 (53–11)
Dirk 1998-2000 (26–10)
Nutt 1997 (5–6)
Mason 1996 (1-9)
Pokey 1993-1996 (24-15)
Hall 1987-1992 (42-28)
Setenich 1983-1986 (24-20)
Criner 1976-1982 (59-21-1)
Knapp 1968-1975(71-19-1)
Smith 1947-1967 (156–26–6)

the history is nice

but i'm guessing an overwhelming percentage of boise state supporters would like to see coach petersen stay for a very long tenure.

yes

mee too!

I'm looking forward to meeting ya on Friday, 81

it's cool

but idk if idaho is our biggest rival anymore. something tells me those days are gone and they're not coming back.

It is only the Broncos that want Idaho rivalry with Idaho

It always makes me chuckle, almost a year after Idaho and BSU played their last football game, that Broncos stil want to get into the weeds about Vandals are bad this or Vandals are drunk that or Vandals really want to play the broncos again but the Broncos are too good now to ever consider it again. Yadda Yadda Yadda.

Actually, folks; just travel around the State of idaho and you won't hear Vandals saying they ever want to play the Broncos again in football, or anything for that matter. Some even vehemently advocate reducing all cooperation between Idaho and BSU and eliminating every penny of Idaho grant money given cooperatively to BSU.

I don't share that view - reducing grant monies would be Idaho cutting off its nose to spite its face. Giving BSU Idaho grant money, kinda keeps BSU on a short string in some ways. Idaho needs to let the elephant into the tent once in a while to give him a bath.

It is dead - let it go, Broncos.

The Vandals don't want to play BSU in football again.

But for some reason, many Broncos just can't let go of their obsession to hate Vandals and that somehow Vandals are chomping at the bit to get beat by the Broncos again.

It used to be sad to listen to it. Now it is funny because it is a form of demonstrated insanity by a few egocentric maroons.

Idaho does not want to be BSU's rival, IMHO.

Go Vandals and Broncos.

Ok

Done deal....no more games with Idaho...have fun...

B43S42U - A dark and stormy night

B43S42U:

Been telling you that for a year. Did it finally sink in?

Oh yeah, BTW - you never did respond to the 3 times, this past week, I have posted requesting you tell us if you ever attended BSU and/or graduated from BSU. I know you were a star player on a national championship JUCO baseball team in Arizona, but don't know if you went on to a 4 year college or not, and if so which one.

Congrats on the national championship in baseball. That is very impressive. Sometimes JUCO ball is harder than 4 yeaar school ball. What position did you play?

Just trying to figure out your roots with BSU and why you have so much pent up and overt Vandal Hatred.

P2 is a self-avowed Vandal Hater. He has been an honest man about it - never once denying it. He has explained, in depth why he hates Vandals so much. While I do not share his hatred, I do respect him greatly for consistently articulating his Vandal Hatred and being 100% upfront about it.

How about you? What makes for the extreme Vandal Hatred? Care to share?

Thanx.

Go Broncos.

VNDL

PS - If you want to share your thoughts about why you hate Vandals, you could write it like a bed time story - that's cool. You could always start it out with "It was a dark and stormy night . . . ".
