The Boise State offense used some big plays and a turnover-free performance Saturday night at Bronco Stadium to beat the defense 26-20 in the fall scrimmage.
Sophomore wide receiver Geraldo Boldewijn made a 66-yard touchdown catch, sophomore tailback Malcolm Johnson scored on a 9-yard run and senior quarterback Kellen Moore shook off a difficult start to lead three scoring drives.
The defense had whipped the offense in the first fall scrimmage.
“It’s really important,” senior left tackle Nate Potter said of the offense’s bounce-back. “It shows that we made progress and we’re getting better. We’ve still got a long way to go till Georgia but you can definitely see we made some strides.”
The defense dominated early as the Broncos’ first-team offense went three-and-out on three straight series. However, Moore tossed a pair of touchdown passes in red-zone possessions that started at the defense’s 25-yard line and hit wide receiver Mitch Burroughs for a 45-yard gain to set up a field goal in the clutch drive, where the offense gets 1 minute, 15 seconds and needs three points.
“I thought the offense was clean,” coach Chris Petersen said. “That (No. 1) defense against our (No. 1) offense, you’d like to see our one offense do a little bit more.”
Moore was 7-of-12 for 116 yards with the two TDs. Sophomore Joe Southwick was 4-of-10 for 101 yards and the TD to
Boldewijn and redshirt freshman Grant Hedrick was 9-of-10 for 97 yards with a TD run.
Redshirt freshman kicker Dan Goodale was 4-of-6 on field goals. He is getting a fight for the starting job from much-improved junior Michael Frisina, who was 5-of-6.
“I do think that they’re going to be solid for us,” Petersen said. “… Those two guys have been competing pretty well neck and neck most of camp.”
Several key players, including defensive tackle Chase Baker, wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker and linebacker J.C. Percy, didn’t practice. Tight end Chandler Koch and wide receiver Aaron Burks were injured during the scrimmage. Petersen, who only details long-term injuries, said none of the injuries are season-ending.
The attendance of 15,632 topped the Spring Game record of 14,445, which was set in April.
I'll post some more notes and quotes on Sunday.

3, 3 & out to start
Chad, which is it: 1) Our defense is that good; 2) Our offense isn't as sharp this year; or 3) It takes more practices to get an offense clicking?
During Kellen's era it's been rare if ever that we've started a game with three straight three and outs.
3-and-outs
Offense always struggles against the defense in camp. There are many reasons for it — great defense usually beats great offense; the defense knows all the plays; offense requires much more cohesion to work; and most importantly, the offense you see on game day is tweaked to create advantageous matchups, whereas the offense you see in a scrimmage is the base version of each play. I wouldn't be too worried. Turnovers, penalties and sacks are the things to get worried about, and the first-team offense had little of any of that.
ummmmmm pilgrim
The offense looked great. have you ever seen a scrimmage? I thought it looked very sharp with two weeks of fall ball gone by. But yes, it does take an offense longer to start to click. Passing is all about timing and the defense has seen all the plays a ton.
Good LORD - talk about CLUELESS
If you "thought" the offense looked "great" and "sharp" then you clearly don't have anything even remotely close to a CLUE.
B754
I think you are forgetting what a scrimmage is like. They were sharper than the spring game last year for sure. And with petis and young gone I thought the recievers were better than I expected. Most mistakes on the ST side of the ball were handeled as good as expected with the exception of the block. I have a clue.... but you can feel free to disagree. The consensus was how shakey the offense was last week. They stepped it up.
My thoughts
Blake Renaud looks like he can be one of those special players.
Q.E. Burton looks like he could be a real stopper at corner.
Hard to believe Root is second unit (plays like someone put a roll of quarters in him).
Moore to Moore will be heard often.
Martin will have fans jumping out of their seat at a record pace.
(EA should do a video game on this guy)
Southwick has made a ton of progress.
Wish I would have seen more of Miller.
We will have one of the best punting units in the nation.
Capital high is becoming quite a pipeline.
Love the video boards.............
My thoughts part 2
The first thing I noticed was the size and speed of the younger guys. Very amazed at the new guys.
Blake Ranaud was a beast and needs to play this year.
Our D line is at least 2 deep and our entire defense is fast and physical.
The hype about Malcolm Johnson is real. And Jay Ajayi looked strong and fast. DJ looked as good as he ever has. And Doug is Doug. We are loaded at RB.
Matt Miller looks an awful lot like Austin Pettis. Even more wearing #2. Kellen likes going to him. And Kirby looks like he just got back from a year of surfing.
Boldwyn...sigh...impressive if he catches and gets to run in the open field.
Burks looked like he tore his acl.
Couldnt figure out who won the Nickel job. All looked to hit hard and all were sure tacklers. Even Corey Bell the young Freshman.
Febis has locked down the Safety spot. Ioane very much a work in progress.
Gabe Linehan is awesome.
JC Percey doesnt look like he will be ready for the opener.
Great comments.
Would also like to see more of Matt Miller and Troy Ware. Miller looks to put up some huge yards-after-catch numbers, and Ware is so smooth with great hands. The freshmen were impressive, probably our best group of recruits ever. Regarding Burks injury, Coach Pete said that neither injury appeared to be season ending but the way Burks went down didn't look good.
charlie
Good point about what Coach Pete said. Im hoping Burks just has a sprain but I hate watching that sort of injury and the Drawer test they use on the field. Last year against OSU, I remember Coach Pete saying after he wasnt sure if DJ's injury was serious when everyone in the stadium watched his knee buckle and knew it was an ACL. Im hoping Im way wrong.
Miller has more speed and size than I thought. And Ware had a great grab towards the end of the scrimmage. And Dallas Burroughs, barring an injury, will play. His speed was hard to ignore.
Anyone else impressed with the size of our DLine? Especially the new guys. Worthy, Ukwuachu, Ash and Horn. I dont think that will be as big as a question mark in the future as I thought.
JL? you are B43S42U?
part one and two? touche tip of the ole sombrero to ya.
I've thought that for a long time.

tfunk also likes Murphy, and I, well, not so much. We've disagreed on this all too often.

Attendance figure?????
There was NO PERSON taking attendance and there were no tickets sold or handed in on entrance. So ANY attendance figure is ridiculous. That is nothing but a GUESS. It has to be. I was there and I would suspect that is a pretty close ESTIMATE.........but there is no way on Earth that anyone KNOWS for certain how many people were there last night.
Bronco 754
There was a person at each entrance with a clicker counter. At least the two entrances I passed on the West Side. I dont think it was exact but it was probably within a few hundred people.
On estimating attendance figures....
it could be done very easily using several methods....the most simplest would be an aerial photo of Bronco Stadium when empty....then use an aerial photo when crowd is their seating during first quarter....you could use a reliable estimate of percent coverage of seats filled versus unfilled....must do this first quarter where most people are seated....fourth quarter people head to restrooms, get popcorn, etc., etc....
This type of mathematical estimation should be left to a Vandal, though....At Idaho, taught much mathematical skills....At Boise State, you dudes probably taught just mostly football....
Ugly....
How do you account for PHAT people distorting the quotient?
PHAT folks count as TWO FUNKY.
----------
Stop it y'all. That's freaky.
Ω Or, weigh the stadium ...
... when empty, then weigh it again when everyone is inside.
Take the difference and divide by the weight of the average cfb fan (or the average BSU cfb fan, if you prefer). That result (for yesterday) would be somewhere in the 14,000 - 15,632 range (± a few depending on gross tonnage of super-sized fries and cases of Keystone Light consumed prior to kickoff).
Sorry To Correct You, Razor...
but I thought that was "Keith Stone" ?
Ω Not sure
Maybe we need an aerial shot just to be sure. As ugly, the math guy, states, that might be "the most simplest" way to tell.
I think
that the stadium was more than half full. 90% of the West side and most of the east side bottom was full. I think that the guestimate was pretty accurate.
razor....not bad idea, but....
lifting stadium could hurt track field and cause additional costs to stadium construction....cost of stadium was one of my 'friction' predictions for 2011....
Dont you remember our 1 an 0 analysis?....when stadium is empty, areial photo in GIS software comptes everything at zero, or an 0 digit....thus if noone there, then 33,000 zeros....now if seat is occupied, then it registers in GIS software a one, or 1....thus if 15,000 + seats occupied, then 15,000 plus 1's are recorded as a known ratio....
For the PHATs, Bronco Stadium is not like airline....cannot charge for two seats....thus, PHATs are recorded as 1+1-1 = 1....you see, pretty simple math....
Vandal math
Nice sentence "At Idaho, taught much mathematical skills...." - but apparently no English skills. If Vandals are so educated at math, why do almost all of them still insist they won 13 straight over Boise State? I guess counting to twelve wasn't one of the math skills taught.
No, 13 was BSU getting stuck in the MWC-that's correct math.

Can Anyone Tell Me
who the offical game placekicker will be?
Kicker
Trevor Harman will handle kickoffs. The field-goal job is still up for grabs. They might even share it between Goodale and Frisina ealry on, with Goodale taking the longer kicks, but that's not going to work long term because I doubt they can afford to take five specialists on the road for conference games — long snapper Chris Roberson, Harman, punter Brad Elkin and two FG guys.
Thanks Chadd
I was unsure if BSU had 1 kicker for KO's and placekicking.
Remember...
me being all excited about Malcolm when he first showed up? I had watched him at Gresham High School and was very dissapointed when he left. I'm happy to see him back and looking good. You just wait and see...
Terrible Announcer!
Whomever was doing the announcing seriously killed the crowd enthusiasm. I remember by tradition the announcer would say with enthusiasm, "And that's another Bronco".... and the crowd would shout, "FIRST DOWN". This announcer at yesterday's scrimmage would say, "And a Bronco"..... crickets.....chirp chirp. It's called tradition so say it right and the crowd will be more into it.
One of the reasons you dont
wnat to freak out about a first down is because the defense is on the field....... It is kind of a slight to them.
idiot.
It's US vs. US ain't it? This is like tuning up your Chevy, P2!
Can we stop mimicking so many names and then abbr them?

May I suggest
midnight for the time and for the place, there is a little piano bar right on the outskirts of Eureka, California that I think would be perfect................
The Time Is Your Choice.
Cabin Bar, Lolo Montana, 6 miles down the dirt road off the Lolo Highway. I'll be on my Road King. Feel free to run yours too.
PS. They're cowboys there. When I showed in full leathers, got a few hackles up. I survived. Lets see how you do.
Ω Was thinking more along the lines ...
... of the La Brea Tar Pits or maybe the M&M in uptown Butte.
ps - Wiz, nice "no reply" to the local antagonist.
pps - ugly, unquestionably you lead the local league in having been called (variously) either an "idot", "leeming", "moran", or "looser". That ought to be worth some sort of "resilience" award. Must think of a good name for it.
razor....yes Ugly has been called all of
those....plus I was voted as the dumbest poster....
The difference is I can handle those and bar-head cannot....
In fact, I probably am the dumbest poster, so no argument there....
Ugly views all of your and other dudes comments as informative, or even funny....some posts back at me were extremely funny....good sense of humors....
bar-head has no sense of humor....
maybe tomorrow bar-head will apologize?....maybe Hershel wont be so serious?....
PS....did you listen to the Chuck Berry and Keith Richards of 'Oh Carol' on YouTube, that I suggested awhile back?....It is great....Keith Richards was humbled by the greatness of Chuck Berry....
PSS....Where is VNDL....an APB on VNDL....
Ω I don't do most things ...
... that anonymous morans suggest. You know, like "hiking", "leaping", or "croaking". I will try to track down that video, though.
VNDL is in the weeds is my guess. Probably just letting the lightweights fire and fall back ... or, more likely, completely flame out ... even before the first game. After all, why waste the effort when the heavy stuff will be needed later?
Ever feel like part of the light cavalry?
bar-none won't be for long around here. Héll, the Wallendas couldn't even use him in a test. Talk about no sense or balance. Apologize? Right. Like those guys who ran afoul of Eastwood's mule.
And Herchel? He's still learning how to tread water while breathing out his backside. Bidet 101 for him.
I don't remember when you got voted "dumbest poster". That must have been way back in the "Pocy" vs. "Poky" days or "my Russet is bigger than yours", or some such.
The ZOO has a new butterfly exhibit

Potato2 comment
Looks like you have a lot of non-local out of town buddies who support you calling someone an idiot. I guess with your logic and that of your out of town buddies, none of us should have cheered the touchdowns or the field goals or the defensive stops on 3rd and short etc. After all, we didn't want anyone to feel bad. Makes a lot of sense now doesn't it? Maybe you don't understand because you aren't a true enough Bronco fan, but the program actually wanted people to cheer for either the offense or defense. Part of the whole reason for opening the scrimmage to the public was for the players to get a realistic game-like scenario. You think the crowd in Georgia is gonna be quiet like the crowd at the scrimmage? Get excited and cheer for something for goodness sakes! The announcer could have done a better job to facilitate some energy. That is a big part of his job.
For Goodness Sakes???
Well don't hurt anyones feelings with that one.
None of us who replied are out of towners, all LOCAL.
P2 is as dedicated a fan as there is. No question.
I, for one, don't think your 2 cent comment about the announcer makes any difference in preparing the team for Georgia noise..to infer that just reinforces P2's idiot comment.
Ever consider the announcer may have had some different instructions for this type of scenario? Obviously not.
Lastly, P2 doen't need any "buddies" to defend him. He'll be back.
Online monkeybars gang
Looks like I found it. That's why I need to remember not to post on here.
Look Bar Whatever
You can run off if you want.
You are the one that let a reply get under your skin, then laid out a you wanna fight challenge? What did you expect?
Most on here, (don't know about you), are ex athletes and wont run from anyone, anywhere, anytime, for any reason.
Remember, you post a comment, it's subject to critique and challenge at any time. Your defense of P2's challenge was ...you wanna fight?
Better ways to defend your post..
So run off with your "better than thou" attitude or be a man and stick around..but thicken thou skin...
Ω First challenge
I remember when the challenge was thrown my way. Pretty close to one of my first posts after having read and ásséssed "the water" for a couple of years. Active on Seahawks boards at the time, but grew tired of that.
So, I figured it was time to go local. Made some sort of half-witted comment starting out. 81 jumped in, called me "sharp guy" (derisively), and invited me to post my comments elsewhere. Pulled my toes out of the water and then realized there is far more to what goes on here than the first glance or two reveals.
It's too bad that there are many who don't take the time to read, digest, offer, take a smackdown or two, and then slowly "figure it out". No manual for that.
How many "here today, gone today" types have we seen? More to follow, for sure.
