The Boise State football team will open the season ranked in the Top 5 for the second straight year.
The Broncos are No. 5 in The Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll (full poll below), released Saturday morning. The Broncos received two first-place votes. Their preseason ranking is the highest in Mountain West Conference history.
Boise State’s opponent for the season opener, Georgia, is No. 19. The Southeastern Conference placed eight teams in the Top 25.
Georgia coach Mark Richt was asked about the Broncos’ ranking Saturday.
“We knew it’d be a Top 10 team. Now it’s Top 5,” he said, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Mountain West member TCU is No. 14.
The top five are Oklahoma, Alabama, Oregon, LSU and Boise State. The first-place votes went 36 to Oklahoma, 17 to Alabama, four to Oregon, one to LSU and two to Boise State.
Boise State received its two No. 1 votes from Tom Murphy of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News.
This is not the first time the Broncos have received first-place votes. They got one in the preseason last year and eight after the first week of games. They kept one for several weeks and had eight again Oct. 10.
Boise State opened at No. 3 last year. The Broncos are No. 7 in this year’s USA Today Coaches’ Poll, which was released earlier this month.
Here is Boise State’s history in the preseason polls:
2011: 5 (AP), 7 (USA)
2010: 3, 5
2009: 14, 16
2007: 24, 23
2005: 18, 19

Here is what Georgia will be wearing for the season opener.
“It’s not what we would call a traditional uniform but it’s not a traditional game either,” Richt said, according to the AJC.
Still no word on when Boise State’s uniforms will be unveiled.

Nevada? They will struggle to win 5 games.
Chadd,
How does it feel to be the only vote of any sort for Nevada?
Nevada
I don't like it but I also don't understand it. As I said above, I'm voting more on past performance than trying to make predictions. They were 13-1 last year. They deserve to start this year in the Top 25. And where they are now doesn't matter anyway — with their schedule they'll have plenty of opportunity to either prove they belong or that they don't. My preseason poll doesn't even really carry over to week two. Once teams start playing, I'll tear it up. Most likely, I'll have the Oregon-LSU winner at No. 1 in the next poll.
Voting on PAST performance????
Apparently you just don't GET THE POINT of this PRE-SEASON poll.
Not that there IS a POINT to the A.P. Poll - since the A.P. poll is 100 percent irrelevant.
Past
What else am I going to vote on? Recruiting cla$$es? Spring Games? My crystal ball? ... When the season begins, I'll vote on what these teams have actually done. But none of them have done anything so far. So to me, if it's between putting a team that went 13-1 last year in the poll or a team that went 6-7, I'll take the team that went 13-1 every time.
As for the AP poll, it still crowns a national champion every year and establishes which schools get covered in most newspapers around the country, so it's far from irrelevant.
Testy, testy
Chadd, I also questioned your placing Hawaii and Nevada at #24 and #25 when I opened the sports pages this morning. I thought it was simply a gratuitous add-on to the top 25 list for an old WAC guy when a number of Pac 12 teams like USC and Utah, to name two, are much more talented. And no vote for Air Force? Considered? They deserve better.
Here's an idea...
I don't root for Auburn, but I would have put them at #1. It should work just like boxing. You get to remain the champ until someone knocks you off that perch.
For all the other positions, it doesn't matter as much -- past performance and educated guessing will do.
Notre Dame?
Chad, Every year Notre Dame gets wishfull votes in the top 25. If you use got Nevada logic, the Irish should be ranked 60.
Nevada,
it shows that not only did nevada lose a ton but they arent credited with beating BSU. In the nations eyes they saw it for what it was, a BSU loss not a Nevada win.
stats
Just have to keep reminding you all of the facts. 250 yards of offense and 27 points in the second half alone in 2010. 168 points hung on BSU in 4 games from 2007-2010. 111-64 Nevada over BSU second half points from 2007-2010 (including from Q2 on in 2009). In the nations eyes, Nevada dominated BSU in the second half and won the game. Nevada also missd a FG in that game. Nevada has dominated BSU in the second in every game from 2007-2010.
Fact : Just As A Reminder....
Last 4 years 1-3 vs BSU
Soon to be 1-4
Nothing else really matters...
Well-deserved congratulations
Nevada knocked off Cal, Boston College, BYU, and BSU last year. That's impressive. Good luck with Oregon to start this year. The MWC needs teams like Nevada to kick in gear and raise Boise's strength of schedule.
Here's a hint on how to beat Oregon... Show up dressed in BSU uniforms. It will scare the feathers off those ducks.
Dont be so sure
Nevada returns 13 starters from last years team. Senior QB Tyler Lantrip is certainly no Kaepernick (the best dual threat in CFB history after all) but he is big, strong, has a great arm, throws very well and runs well. He is in his 5th year and whenever he has played, has looked stellar. Vai Taua and Virgil Green are gone to the NFL, but junior RB Mike Ball is every bit as good as Taua, maybe better. Taua's success was due as much to the pistol as it was to his ability. When Ball did get the call, he scored. Remember his 5 TD's in one game? Even though Brandon Wimberly is out for good, the receiving corps is strong. I'm sure you remember Rishard Matthews and his run through the Bronco D last November. Dontay Moch is with the Bengals now, but James Michael Johnson will more than fill his shoes. The bottom line is even though the Wolf Pack lost seven players to the NFL, 13 are returning. They are by no means depeleted. Their 13-1 season resulted in strong recruiting and a number of terrific JUCO transfers too. They have a brutal first 4 weeks on the road opening against Oregon, SJSU, Texas Tech and BSU. But Ault has been toughening them up with brutal early season games in recent years(like Missouri twice, Texas Tech twice, Notre Dame, Nebraska, CAL etc...) after which they are more than ready for the WAC. I'm calling for a 9-3 season with an outright WAC Championship and only 1 bye week. Some teams (ahem)have a 12 game season with 2 bye weeks. If you think they are a depleted team, think again. I think they will surprise a lot of people this season once they get past the first four weeks.
In Spite of Your Snobby
attitude and jabs at BSU, there are many fans here that tremendously respect Nevada and even cheer for their success. Many of us were very excited to have them join us in the MWC next season, an up and coming program that they are.
4 weeks on the road IS brutal.
Good luck with Oregon, love to see you beat them, but I have a hunch you're getting drubbed at Autzen. It takes time for the new faces to gel with game chemistry. Hopefully you'll have that by the 4th game...you'll need it.
Ω Close guess, JL; missed by a little
I had BSU (at #6) ahead of Florida State, but behind Stanford.
Interesting that the AP has Georgia ahead of Auburn while the coaches went the other way (Auburn 19, Georgia 22).
Ault and the Wolfpack probably like Chadd.
Where are the Vandals?
Baffling how the polls keep overlooking the mighty u of i Vandals. Surely they are a top 10 team.
That's funny
That's funny
As a BSU fan
and a 30 year resident of the state of Idaho, I look forward to the day both BSU and Idaho are both ranked in the top 25 (I would take a road trip to see all my friends that live in Oregon).
Thumbs Up.
.
That really could happen
if Idaho goes back to the Big Sky where they belong.
vandals and Big Sky
I am not so sure the Big Sky would welcome the vandals back and even if they did, u of i would be a middle of the conference team at best.
You can look forward to BSU UI being ranked and I will
look forward to Jews and Muslums dancing accross the lush green hillsides of the Holy land holding hands dancing on rainbows. Which will happen first?

Any tips on what to watch for this evening?
Scrimmage
Safety play — Cedric Febis has been sound lately but needs to avoid errors back there, and Jeremy Ioane has played better lately.
Freshmen — LB Blake Renaud, N Corey Bell and WR Dallas Burroughs are in the running to play this year.
Wide receivers — How will guys like Matt Miller and Dallas Burroughs handle the game-like setting. Geraldo did great in the spring scrimmages, so I think he'll be fine.
Right guard — Tonight will be key for Jake Broyles and Chuck Hayes.
Thanks Chadd

why only two scrimmages
Chad, why are we only at two scrimmages as of today and other teams have already done three by last week
Scrimmages
Boise State never does more than three in the fall. Usually, the third one is the week before the game. Practices are closed next week so I don't have a schedule but I'd guess there's a third one in there.
But also, Petersen has cut back on scrimmaging during his time as the head coach. From three to two in the spring. And the last couple years he has described the closed fall scrimmage as "not really a scrimmage." ... He has had a lot of veteran-laden teams and injuries are always a concern in scrimmages.
Thanks
Thanks Chad
I wonder if
they will unveil the uni's tonight at the scrimmage?

I Like The Jersey #
they used to unveil the DOGS uni's.......
It's also
Murray's number........
Apparently they are asking all fans to wear red.................
How Will Dog Fans, TF,
react after the game?
BSU wins...will BSU be deserving of their 5 ranking and move up having beaten a pre ranked #19?
... will BSU be denied credibility by Dog fans saying their own team was undeserving of a 19 ranking?
.... or just make excuses?
Dawg fans
will say congrats on the win.
You Might.
But I doubt it's a trend or the norm, especially from what I see on a couple of UGA blogs
You might
want to check out the comments here.
Herch...We've Had Fans Like You Here Before. Here's What
happens.
They open an account and make a couple of posts (like you). The factual reples they receive usually quiets then down (like you). Then the come with a 1 liner here and there(like you). Then they lurk and read everything (like you), hoping their team wins (like you). When their team loses, they disappear (like you).
We've seen it from Ducks, Beavers, Hokies, Horny Frogs, Sooners, and many others.
Now go back and study South Carolina some more, since your Dogs are having to spend so much camp time preparing for them and ONLY have a week to get ready for the Broncos.
LMAO
I was here in 2005. But, since I am not welcome, adios.
Glad U Thought It was Funny Herch... And
I didn't want to make you feel like you weren't welcome. The last comment was in reference to your post re your upcoming SC game. You earned that one.
Stick around....it's fun posting & reading while the game is going on on TV..unless you're in live attendance.
You guys are just cranking air over all that.

Wisdomless...what facts are you talking about??
Boise's all time record against BCS conference (real) teams is 9-16...fact
Boise plays one real game a season...fact
Boise fills its schedule with Toledo, Tulsa, Miami, Oh, Southern Miss...fact
The fact is, hillbilly, that teams from the SEC, Pac12 and other power (real) conferences must prepare for the high profile non conference games in addition to the grind of 9 BCS conference game.
The fact is, Boise has to play one real game a season and then its just little sisters...fact.
FACT...watch Utah this season as they play in a real conference, albeit, a little watered down now that the round robin schedule is no more...as they struggle to be .500.
Fact, being a poato growing, corn cobb pipe smokin, jiffy lube workin, moonshine shootin, hee haw rerun watchin hillbilly obviously gives you license to flash your ignorance with every one of your posts.
Do us all a favor wisdomless...put your hat back on and go back to your village...theyre lonely without their idiot!!

"Recent performance"? How does that criteria have you put Auburn at 17?
Auburn
I didn't say I was totally consistent! ... They haven't consistently performed at that level. And if you look at the ballots, I had Auburn ranked higher than almost every other voter, so I did give them a boost. Just like I didn't vote Nevada where they finished last year but felt they deserved to be in the poll.
Well Chadd...
I'll give you kudo's for keeping a 6-7 team out of the rankings...you can't be accused of a homer looking at your UGA non rank...LOL
I am starting to respect the AP poll
BECAUSE it isnt tainted as much by those who stand to gain. The coaches poll is a joke, the harris poll is a late bloomer and the AP is exactly what a "poll" should be. A consensus opinion.
As for Chadds vote. I understand exactly why he votes the way he does and if I had a say I would probably vote similair. It is unfair how teams like notre dame and georgia get in just because of their names. Geesh even UW had a top 25 vote..... But it is a little concerning when the hometown guy votes them lower than the prejudiced southern media types.......
Uni's
I think
