After losing to Pocatello in the second round of the American Legion AA State Baseball Tournament earlier in the week, the Boise Gems had to win five straight games to hoist the championship trophy for the second consecutive season.
In Sunday’s championship series at Skip Walker Field in Twin Falls, the Gems cruised to wins of 14-4 (7 innings) and 12-4, winning the club’s ninth state title since 1991.
Nick Brockman earned the complete-game win on the mound in the opener with the help of three doubles and four RBIs from Cody Hamlin.
Junior pitcher Tommy Barker guided the Gems to the victory in Game 2 as catcher Tony Salas broke open a 5-4 game in the fifth inning with a grand slam.
The Gems advance to the American Legion Northwest Regional Tournament Aug. 4-8 in Billings, Mont. They open against host Montana at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
