Idaho football coach Robb Akey is getting at least part of his wish when it comes to future football schedules. The Vandals have added home-and-home series with Northern Illinois and UNLV to their schedule, giving Akey the games he covets against teams from non-AQ conferences.
The Vandals host Northern Illinois in 2013 before making a trip to the Huskies in 2014. The Vandals visit UNLV in 2016 before hosting the Rebels in 2017, Idaho athletic director Rob Spear confirmed to the Statesman on Saturday afternoon.
Akey expressed concern at the WAC Football Preview in Las Vegas about the Vandals' need to play more than one game per season against BCS-level competition. Akey prefers to fill out the schedule with one BCS game, one FBS game and the remainder against teams from similar conferences to the WAC, including the Mountain West.
UNLV is a member of the Mountain West. Northern Illinois is a member of the Mid-American Conference.
Spear said there is nothing new to report on the Vandals' 2012 schedule, which includes one opening. Idaho hosts Eastern Washington and Wyoming and visits Bowling Green, LSU and BYU next season — leaving one opening. Spear ruled out the possibility of playing Boise State in 2012 last month.
