Sen. Werk mum on possible run for Boise City Council

Sen. Elliot Werk, D-Boise, is declining to comment on speculation he may run for the Boise City Council this fall.

David Frazier of the Boise Guardian reported Monday that he'd heard "rumblings" Werk might run. Two candidates are already in, appointed incumbent Lauren McLean and former Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce staffer Ben Quintana.

Frazier reported that he asked Werk about his plans and was told, "NO COMMENT."

Tuesday morning, I asked the senator the following:" Are you considering running for council? If so, would you remain in the Senate, as several legislators have?"

Werk is a tireless and highly organized campaigner who works full-time hours in a part-time job. He helped turn District 17 on the Boise Bench into one of Idaho's few solidly Democratic districts, after upsetting incumbent GOP Sen. Grant Ipsen in 2002. Ordinarily, he is among the most voluble of solons.

Not on this question, however.

I got a tad more out of Werk, including a polite salutation and no all-caps reply. Wrote Werk in an email: "Good morning. No comment."

Werk later told me that the capitalization was an "enhancement" in Frazier's recounting of their email exchange. Werk said he wrote in conventional style, "No comment."

The filing period begins Aug. 29 and ends Sept. 9. The election is Nov. 8.
