Normally, I'd ignore the whole China-is-buying-Idaho conspiracy theory — but we have gotten a few calls about it at the Statesman.
So I guess you could say the theory is out there. In more ways than one.
As with many conspiracy theories, it begins with a kernel of truth: a Chinese national company's interest in pursuing projects in Idaho, and Idaho officials' willingness to talk to the Chinese.
The conspiracy theorists latch onto a couple of quotes from Idaho officials, in Statesman articles on the state's interest in strengthening its business relationship with China.
Quotes like this one from Lt. Gov. Brad Little: “Idaho’s the last state that should say we don’t want to do business with Asia. Asia’s where the money is.”
Quotes like this one from Idaho Commerce Department Director Don Dietrich: "The Chinese are looking for a beachhead in the United States."
Things quickly morph from there. And so, in a post today at a site called The New American.com, Joe Wolverton II says Gov. Butch Otter's rhetoric touting his "Project 60" economic development plan amounts to little more than subterfuge. "There is in Governor Otter’s letter nothing of substance, plenty of weasel words, and an extraordinary display of misdirection all designed to lull the citizens of the sovereign state of Idaho into a stupor while their state is sold to the Chinese."
Here are a few more links. Read them yourself:
• From a site called The Intel Hub comes the warning that China is wants construct a 50-square-mile self-sustaining city south of Boise.
"The planned 'self-sustaining city' in Idaho would include manufacturing facilities, warehouses, retail centers and large numbers of homes for Chinese workers. Basically it would be a slice of communist China dropped right into the middle of the United States."
The springboard for this Wednesday post is a Dec. 31 article by the Statesman's Rocky Barker. The article outlines Chinese national companies' interest in building and financing a fertilizer plant near American Falls, and developing a "10,000- to 30,000-acre technology zone for industry, retail centers and homes south of the Boise Airport."
• In a May 12 post, also at The New American.com, William F. Jasper writes about Sinomach, the company pursuing the two Idaho proposals.
"What the Statesman article does not tell its readers is that Sinomach is not your typical private enterprise, as corporations are generally understood to be in the Western sense, but instead a commercial-political-military-intelligence instrument of the communist regime in Beijing.
"Sinomach’s website makes this interesting admission:
'With approval of the State Council, China National Machinery Industry Corporation (SINOMACH) was established in January 1997. SINO-MACH is a large scale, state-owned enterprise group under the supervision of the State Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.'"
• In a May 31 post, self-described reverend and journalist Bill Turner at Boise Conservative Examiner takes things a step further. He posits the theory that Gov. Butch Otter and President Barack Obama are conspiring to make Idaho the first Chinese-owned state.
"Idaho is a resource rich state and the Chinese know it, as does Obama, who keeps snatching Idaho land. Otter, Obama and the attack on business in America paves the way for China to own us. ...
"The term 'Buy Idaho,' has become more than just a brand for Idaho goods. China took it literally."

a few calls
So it only takes "a few calls" to get some action there?
Nice to know. I'll keep calling about getting Rocky fired.
China
Saw an interesting show the other day on PBS about trains in China- specifically steam trains.
The take away was MOST of China is DIRT poor.
i.e. still using oxen to transport a bag of rice and scavenging single chunks of coal from the railroad tracks to provide heat for the night.

Economic survival equates to dependency.
When China depends on the US for much of its economy, it becomes more easy for the US to 'persuade' China to help and assist US foreign policy and fall in line with human rights actions.
China has a long ways to go, but if we repel China they have zero incentive to 'come along for the ride'.

Let me guess, the conspiracy chatter is coming from Tea Party members...
"Normally, I"d ignore the whole..
..China blah, blah, blah. How come you ignored State Rep. Sue Chew and the misuse of her office on the education reform issue? If it had been a republican we would be hearing about for days from you. What a tool you are KP.
Sue Chew
We wrote a front page article about it, and in Wednesday's editorial, we criticized her for the ethical lapse. So I'm not sure how you arrive at the conclusion that we "ignored" it.
Kevin Richert
editorial page editor
I'm referring to your blog and editorial...
....don't pass off Wednesday's editorial where you made light of Chew's misuse of her office. How dare you pass off one sentence in an entire editorial as evidence of criticizing her ethical lapse. Perhaps you overlooked her comments to government teachers that they should pass on to their students how important is was to get them motivative to defeat these reforms. I'm not addressing the news articles on her but on the response coming from the editorial position of the Statesman.
Made light?
We said it was an ethical lapse. We said House Minority Leader John Rusche was right to publicly criticize Chew for it.
Our criticism was direct — and presented in appropriate context. And the context of Wednesday's editorial is important.
House State Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Loertscher held a bill, perhaps acting out of his own personal interest. That's a pretty serious allegation; Republicans in the Senate basically forced GOP Sen. Jack Noble to resign in the wake of similar allegations. House Speaker Lawerence Denney says he sees no reason to investigate Loertscher. That was the focus of our editorial, and I think it was appropriate.

focus
So you are saying the focus of the editorial was Denney's lack of action- not Chew's action.
So how can you defend your lack of editorial comment about Chew?
You have yet to do an editorial *focused* on her misuse of govt resources against the Luna bills.
Exactly right on..
..Thank you for so clearly coming to the point of what I was trying to say. Kevin will not
write an editorial "focused" on her misuse of State resources because he agrees with what she was doing.
Unless readers bring it to his attention, KP will turn a blind eye to anythingthat might bring down Luna and the Legislative passed reform laws.
No problem.
Seriously, it was no problem cuz it's easy to see the ways of the Statesman.
The editorial board (and KR) goes easy on Democrats and government agencies that advertise with them (ACHD).
Has anyone seen an ACHD dumptruck on the front of Statesman.com lately?
Of course not. It's not an election year and no one is expecting endorsements right now.
Can you imagine what would happen if......
a Republican State Senator sent a message to area teachers asking them to get their students interested in attending a State Prayer Breakfast to become more familiar with religious views in the community? KR would have stroke - and the editorial board would pound on that story for an eternity! Just gotta laugh at the Statesman's use of their infamous double standard.
So the chaplains in the US Congress and Statehouse...
are fine with you?
They are with me. But Tea people never study nor understand the way our government works. C'mon Tet, you must be past 55, what up?
Thank you for posting.

?MIsuse? of government resources? For sending 1 email telling teachers to talk about the referendum campaign int he classroom? Give me a break.
That was a good editorial.
That was a good editorial. Thanks, Kevin.
Are you as worried about he
Are you as worried about he Republican state rep who has decided he is above paying taxes?
So from reading the direct
So from reading the direct quote from Chew's letter, she encouraged government teachers to discuss the referendum campaign. She did not encourage the teachers to take a specific position on the campaign. Not exactly an impeachable offense.
and...and...
Sue Chew is Chinese!
The plot thickens!
Like Jello and carrots before Mom drops it.

I thought the same thing.
Truth is hard to come by
And it's not like what Rep
And it's not like what Rep Chew did was that reprehensible - I would say it was a walk in the park compared to the Republican state rep who is fighting tooth and nail against paying his taxes.

Truth is Sometimes Stranger Than Fiction
If a corporate arm of the communist Chinese government believes it is going to set up a slave factory for imported chinese workers in the state of Idaho, it had better re-think its plans. On the other hand, if they intend to set up a slave factory for Idaho workers, then I am sure Governor Otter is behind them one hundred percent.
I don't see the problem
Business investment equals jobs.
It seems like Americans are unwilling to invest in our own country, by building factories, offices and infrastructure here. They are more than willing to invest in other countries though, and ship our jobs there.
If China (or anyone else) wants to invest here, we should be thrilled.
Right now the US is enemy territory for business investment...
but it will change soon. Most changes take time and discipline. Patience.
The Point
The point is that we should be reading about American companies who want to build in Idaho. Between Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr., and Obama, we have been deregulated out of a viable economic reality. In the guise of reducing taxes for small business, the federal, state, and local governments gave massive tax breaks to corporate behemoths. Soon thereafter, the monsters were allowed to consolidate and the local business owner went bankrupt. Now, the giants are being devoured by interests form other nations. Neither the Democrats or Republicans offer any alternatives to the impending doom that faces the United States. Until conservatives and liberals realize that they share a third enemy called oligarchy things will only get much worse in America.
100%
Correct.
The country is going to he## in a handbasket and.......
