Mining issue doesn't come up as Boise County road projects passed over

Boise County couldn’t convince the Southwest Idaho Resource Advisory Committee to help it fund maintenance of Grimes Pass Road near Pioneerville.

The Southwest Resource Advisory Committee, a panel of local officials, recreation people, industry, union folk and environmentalists, didn’t get into the mining controversy Thursday that had previously been raised by environmentalists. The fact the road was going toward Mosquito Gold's exploration area had brought criticism from environmentalists.

But that issue never came up except that the county road staff said Mosquito had offered to provide $12,000 in matching funds at their request.

County officials made there case for the Grimes Pass project as well as expanding the Harris Creek Bridge near Horseshoe Bend and a portion of Grimes Creek road at the meeting in Cascade Thursday. But they did not coordinate with the Boise National Forest as other successful projects had.

Only a project to replace a culvert to help fish migration got approval for Boise County in this final round of Secure Rural Schools funding for 2012. The $600,000 left was divided between a host of other projects including some roads in other counties.
