Report: Boise State adds Arizona cornerback to 2011 recruiting class

By Brian Murphy
bmurphy@idahostatesman.com

Boise State has added another defensive back to its 2011 recruiting class — Malcolm Holland.

Holland, 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, is one of 14 players from his Arizona high school team to sign with a four-year college to play football.

"They're truly the best in their field of expertise but are more importantly good leaders, along with their whole coaching staff," Holland in a blog post at azcentral.com. "It shows in their graduation rate and success on the field. I am very blessed and thank God for everything. ... I can't wait to get to work."

The Broncos added 22 players on National Signing Day earlier this month, including six defensive backs (cornerbacks, safeties and nickels). Learn more about the Broncos' incoming class here.

Boise State has not announced that Holland has signed with the program.

Old news

obnug.com is way ahead of you

Murphy usually has old news - nothing new there

This site is a great place to engage in Bronco and CFB football talk and discussions among those who love Bronco football - AFTER - the news has been made.

If I want current breaking news about BSU football, I usually get it at OBNUG or sometimes, even BroncoCountry.com.

But, the Statesman's football blogs for news? Nah, not so much. Once in a while, but not consistently.

Is Murphy even half awake these days?

VNDL

PS - I am kinda curious about one thing. I understand the new committ (Holland) got a scholarship. Where did that come from? I understood all schollies were exhaustd on LOI Day, with the Gray Shirts having to go into a holding pattern and some recruited 'Preferred Walk-on's' having to wait for one of the 85 schollies to open up. How did Holland get a schollie when committing almost 2 weeks after LOI Day and all 85 schollies were supposedly gone? Maybe Murphy could dig into that a little bit? Maybe that is why BSU has had no 'Official Announcement' as they are trying to figure out 'how to rob Peter to pay Paul'?

PPS - It seems like Murphy only reprits what the BSU AD feeds him in an official presser. If they release an official presser, then it is 'news'. What happened to actually digging into a story and following up all leads? I guess it is easier to just take a canned pressser and regurgitate the information, rather than digging deep and following a trail to get the news and actually questioning the BSU AD 'news' source.

PPPS- Maybe too many meatballs and beer? Hmmm?

Scholarship count

There were 84 scholarship players on the team last fall and the graduating class opened up another 16, so 17 total were available. Therefore there will have to be a combination of six gray shirts or departing scholarship players. Since Matt Keiserman is having to give up football due to concussions, there will be five more gray shirts or departures to meet the limit of 85 for next fall.

Oops, forgot....

that Hayden Plinke has already decided to gray shirt, so four more gray shirts or departures are needed.

obnug.com?

If you're gonna criticize the Statesman, at least get the source right, obnug gets their news from BroncoCountry.com.

hilarious quote

"It shows in their graduation rate and success on the field"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still laughing?

Here are the Academic Progress Rates for the football teams for the last five years of available data:

University of Idaho ID 2004 - 2005 931
University of Idaho ID 2005 - 2006 924
University of Idaho ID 2006 - 2007 904 Immediate Penalty - Scholarship Reduction = 8
University of Idaho ID 2007 - 2008 905
University of Idaho ID 2008 - 2009 908 Immediate Penalty - Scholarship Reduction = 6

Boise State University ID 2004 - 2005 948
Boise State University ID 2005 - 2006 955
Boise State University ID 2006 - 2007 953
Boise State University ID 2007 - 2008 966
Boise State University ID 2008 - 2009 974

The Boise State football team's score of 974 tied Penn State for third-highest in the nation, behind Miami (Fl) and Ohio State. Still laughing?

Chirp, chirp.

Re: Still Laughing?

WOW, that is really impressive. Do you know what they factor in when computing APR? Staying in school and eligible. Has nothing to do with graduating players. Akey cleaned house his 1st year which is why you see a penalty, he has them up to 85 now.

The fact that

they take away scholarships for APR makes it kinda important.

I do believe there was good reason for Idaho's problems and I applaud Akey for his efforts.

In the NCAA's own words...

"The APR is the fulcrum upon which the entire academic-reform structure rests. Developed as a more real-time as$essment of teams' academic performance than the six-year graduation-rate calculation provides, the APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who meet academic-eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. A team's APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points possible."

http://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/ncaahome?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/ncaa/NCAA/Academics+and+Athletes/Education+and+Research/Academic+Reform/General+Information/defining_academic_reform.html

APR

What is your point? They now use APR because it's easier to track annually? APR is a joke. If staying eligible and remaining at one institution is your barometer for academia at your school than so be it. I was pointing out that a solid APR does not reflect the academic prowess of the student athletes at a university. Talk to any head coach and they'll tell you that it's all about graduating players. Most have incentives to do so. Preparing them for life after college athletics as a very small percentage will go pro.

The point is...

... that the governing body that enforces the rules ( the NCAA) uses the APR as its metric of choice. Therefore, from the standpoint of real-world tracking of the academic achievement of student athletes, it is the only metric that matters.

Missing the point

KRPballer pointed out that the comment "It shows in their graduation rate and success on the field." was laughable.

Cherokeeguy responds by pointing out that BSU's APR rate vs Idaho's.

I was merely pointing out that the APR has nothing to do with graduating players.

You chime in on how important the APR is. Who said it wasn't important for football programs?

The point is....it's all about graduating players. THAT SHOULD be the barometer but it's not. Highly doubt any good parent tells Peterson "hey coach, I don't care if my son graduates but make sure he stays eligible". Give me a break.

That being said, I'm confident Peterson will be able to get the graduation rate up for BSU. He is a great coach and an even better person.

He missed the point because he's a . . .

He seems to constantly, not get, what others are posting about.

But, he is a good musician:

Boise state: 65%

So they have an average football graduation rate, and a top 15 football APR. What exactly is your point?

Victory Chains

Kenneth Massey ranks all college football teams that participate in the sport under the governing bodies of the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA. According to him, there are 773 such teams. Teams ranked 1-4 were either undefeated, or only beat each other, meaning they could not participate in a victory chain longer than length 1. Teams ranked 749-773 were either winless or they only beat each other, so their victory chains are also uninteresting. However, #748 Knox College (NCAA Div III) went 1-9 this past season, but their fan base can claim transitive victory over some of the best teams in the country (All listed rankings are Massey):

marcsulf - I bid you 'adieu'

It is not an insult. It was a link to a funny thing, had you even taken the time to open it and listen to it. But you did not. You immediately jumped to your self-contrived conslucsion that validates your fixed belief that everybody is out to get you and make life miserable for you.

Was meant in the vein of some comedic relief.

I do this kind of stuff from time to time. That is just me. Others seem to accept it and we all seem to get along real good.

No hostility intended.

You seem to take yourself waaaay too seriously. You make the constant false assumption that people actually give a ratz azz what you have to say.

Learn to laught at things a little and have some fun.

Most of us on these boards do it to each other from time to time - AND ENJOY it.

We are not enemies here.

Okay. Now that I understand where you are coming from; I will consider you as a serious person who is posting what you consider to be Highly Factual and Technical Football Information, with no sense of humor, nor any desire to have normal 'friendly' back-and-forth banter, and will not read your posts, nor respond to them, further.

Good day, Sir.

VNDL

Bad assumption.

I listened to the whole thing. I even got a good chuckle out of it. But you are being disingenuous by claiming it wasn't meant to be an insult. Even still, I would have taken it as a good-natured one if it weren't for the fact that it was coupled with another one on this same page.

You clearly don't know me at all when you say I take myself way to seriously. I certainly wouldn't be posting on a football blog in my spare time if that were the case. I do enjoy making a good argument based on facts, but I also enjoy joking around sometimes, too. As for sense of humor, read through some of my previous posts and re-evaluate. I've been posting on this site off and on for the past 5 years. A lot of what I post is factual info, and some of it is just for fun... much like yourself, although in much more limited volume.

I hope you aren't serious when you say you are going to ignore everything I post from here on out. Maybe you should take some of your own advice and lighten up a little. I never claimed to be your enemy, and I have no ill feelings toward you at all.

Peace.

Then I passed an essay and was promoted to the dumbest poster....then have progressed alittle and have become half-way intelligent....I'm sitting in the half-way area right now...I don't think that you are too far behind me though....

As a Vandal, I try to concentrate alittle more on our school than on football...the Univ of Idaho is hurting, I believe through some frivilous financial mistakes....BSU has great football, but is trying to increase academically for reasons primarily related AQ conferencing and tv monies...

If BSU is going to keep coach Pete 4 years from now, the income will have to be in the 3 million arena....that is why it is so important for BSU to clobber Georgia, TCU, and Tulsa...and the rest, esp Nevada.....

Thats Pretty good VNDL

I barely saw your lips move and ugly doesnt seem to mind your whole arem up his backside.

Fugly is wise

Ugly sez, en parte: " . . . BSU has great football, but is trying to increase academically for reasons primarily related AQ conferencing and tv monies..."

Great point. Most universities improve their academics to improve their academics and their standing among other universities. For example, Harvard is always striving to improve their academics, because they are 'Harvard'.

BSU however, has chosen to improve its academics in order to improve their chances of getting into an AQ conference; which ultimately improves the football team and brings in more money, so BSU can continue to improve academics.

Actually, while it is a novel approach, BSU simply is playing the cards they have been dealt. Kudos to BSU for focusing on Football First and academics Second. In time someday, when Bronco football is in an AQ conference and BSU is riding the financial Gravy Train, we will witness a priority reversal at BSU where Academics is First and Football is Second. At that time it won't really matter if the Broncos win a conference and go to a BCS game, or not. The Gravy, via AQ status, will still be rolling in, regardless of how many games the Broncos win or not.

Ugly also, sez, en parte: " . . . If BSU is going to keep coach Pete 4 years from now, the income will have to be in the 3 million arena.
"

Another great point(at least $3Mil - could be more).

I was in a discussion about this the other day and the consensus among about 6 of us CFB and Bronco Fans is that in a few years, Coach Pete is going to be wanting double of what he is currently getting. The rub is - WHERE is this additional money gonna come from? The BAA is currently wanting more money from Bronco Fans for the expansion of facilities and ofices and locker rooms - NOT TO MENTION - another phase of the Bronco Stadium expansion project, set to take off after the expansion of facilities is completed. I have heard the amount of $150 Mil for both projects (during the time frame of 2011 through 2014).

How much can the average Bronco Fan give to support the Broncos? The base of Bronco Nation is not nearly as large as the fan bases of the Big Schools that do pay their coaches huge money.

Will their contributory loyalty continue to increase, forever?

Is there a 'tipping point'

Where will $3Mil - ANNUALLY - come from to give to Coach Pete, to keep him in Boise as the Head Coach - WHILE the Bronco Fans are turning their pants pockets inside out and shaking all spare change out, to give to the BAA for the $150Mil stadium expansion?

It is good to have future plans for Bronco Stadium expansion and wanting to give Coach Pete more money to stay in Boise; but somebody neds to explain to me where the members of Bronco NAtion are gonna get this Huge Jingle, absent a large corporate sponsor, who would then in essence, become a silent owner of a semi-pro team.

VNDL

PS - Yep, BSU has to clobber Georgia, TCU, and Tulsa...and the rest, esp Nevada. Gotta never lose a game and have undefeated season. Nothing short of that. Gotta keep that BAA and Bronco Booster money rolling in and keep the donors happy so they don't think twice about getting their checkbooks out, while they are in their states of winning and Top 10 ranking euphoria.

Gotta disagree

with the $3M salary in 4 years. There are only about 5 coaches making $3M+ in salary and all their programs have 5 times the budgets.

I think coach Pete understands that his salary at BSU will cap out at around $2M (at least until the budget doubles). If and/or when Pete leaves, it will have nothing to do with money.

tfunky - ? & some Ponder Bait

tfunk sez, en parte: " . . . There are only about 5 coaches making $3M+ in salary and all their programs have 5 times the budgets . . ."

I am confused. I understand Coach Pete to be making @$1.5M a year (currently), with @$147,000 coming from the "programs's budget", as the official BSU Football program's budget money is State of Idaho funded bucks. The "other money" contrtibuted to 'support' BSU's Football Program is via private booster donations and contributions; but, is not considered part of the BSU Football Program's budget.

So, in essence; what are you saying, when you say 5 other coaches making $3M+ in salary and all their programs have 5 times the budgets? What budgets?

Techinically, Coach Pete makes @$147,000 per year from State of Idaho taxpayers. The rest comes from donations of money from the BAA and other Bronco Fotball supporters - a BAA budget maybe, but not an official BSU Football Program budget.

So - It would be a more accurate statement to say. "There are only about 5 coaches making $3M+ in donations and all their athletic associations/boosters organizations have 5 times the money that the BAA has"? No?

Back to my original point from my post above - Where is the money gonna come from to get Coach Pete more money, on a consistent annual basis, unless the members of Bronco Nation that contribute money to keep Coach Pete, grows exponentially?

Also, if the BAA gives the vast majority of the money of Coach Pete's pay - should the contract to hire Coach Pete be between Coach Pete and the BAA and not Coach Pete and BSU?

Also, what if the BAA paid 100% of Coach Pete's pay and let the Idaho taxpayers completely off the hook for the remaining @$147,000 - even if Coach Pete was a State of Idaho emplyee (technically Coach Pete would be a volunteer state employee or even just give him $1.00 per year of State taxpayer's money, to qualiafy as a State Employee). Would that not go a long way to create a good image that Coach Pete was not costing the Idaho taxpayers any money and bringing in millions for the State of Idaho, out of the goodness of the BAA's contributors - thereby, making Coach Pete and the BAA Big Heroes in the eyes of the Idaho taxpayers?

Not necessarily advocating anything - just some thoughts to ponder.

VNDL

VNDL...it can be

done if BSU wins and starts to model themselves after two schooling systems:

1. Nebraska
2. Penn State

By Nebraska, I mean that BSU has to be 'THE' football team for the state of Idaho--much like Nebraska...In Nebraska, when the Cornhuskers play the entire state shuts down and watches....If Osborne would request 10 pushups from all fans at home, they would do it...The state-fans are red are gameday-saturday.....I have traveled thru Nebraska on gameday...trust me, you are either a cornhusker or a traiter...I have stop to get a bite to eat only to wait for the darned cook to get off his cornhusker break.....BSU needs to be THE team in Idaho and they are doing that...

By Penn State, I mean College and football coach....Pterno is Penn State football, and Penn State University is an excellent school to become an alumni from....Alumni donate multiple millions because of their alma-mater and because Pterno is equated with the famous Penn State...they haven't fired too many coaches...Coach Pete can do the same...that is, become an icon, with time, with BSU football and also represent the college...

This will lead to business donors more than willing to open their wallets to become part of the winning BSU team much as that in Nebraska or Penn State...For instance, look at the Dairy Industry and Chocalte Milk and Kirsten...She sold alot of Choc. milk....You have many commodity groups in Idaho....If BSU wins and goes undefeated, and markets themselves beyond Bronco Nation...then the monies will come in....

Anyway, had a good run followed by few beers so better hit sack...
